More than likely it just made for a funny visual.

None, really, and those are considered some of the best episodes in the series.
I submit that the show could have easily covered hitting the lush and having a run for her in one half hour and that it could have done the same with Ryan's website idea and the gift basket idea.
ETA: I think the worst part is that several of the things we actually saw happen in these hour long episodes could have been used as references to these episodes in future shows. That's the sort of thing I like to see happen on the show, and I fear we won't get as much of that referencing these two hour long episodes because they have mined all the useful material.

Loved the episode. Big improvement over last week.

You guys catch the joke about all the ink in the printer being gone, and Creed's new hair color? Hilarious!
This show still has an enormous amount of subtle humor, I really don't understand the criticism this show is receiving from some fans. Sure, some of the scenes are over the top. But, part of the success of this show is due to its mass appeal. Even though most people here seem to agree that Micheal driving the car into the lake wasn't really that funny (and I would also agree), I suspect a ton of people did. And I suspect many of these people also missed the aforementioned gag. I think that's what makes this show so great!

I don't get so much of the hate for this episode. There were more quotable lines, more memorable moments in this single episode than there can be in an entire season of other "sitcoms".
One of my favorite parts of the episode was "Garbage". The story, the way Dwight explained everything, and then especially how after Angela starts to walk away it cuts to a security cam view. Dwight stands there for a second, looks down at Garbage, pauses, looks behind him and sees the empty office, pauses, looks back down at Garbage, then looks all around to make sure no one is looking then runs and opens the door the to office and tosses Garbage in there and quickly walks away after once again making sure no one saw him do it.

Great episode, both of them.
Am I the only one who noticed the homage to the UK Office in Jan and Ryan's conversation about Ryan having her old Job? It was very similar to David Brent and Gareth's conversation about the same thing in the UK's Holiday Special.

If anyone has a link to the Entertainment Weekly cover with Jan and her new breasts all over Michael, please post it and I'll be eternally grateful.

In the same respect, maybe this will lead up to Ryan firing Michael?

For those of you who don't believe someone would follow GPS directions into a lake:

There was a scene before the infamous moment where Michael drove into a lake where he was amazed how the GPS always knew which direction to turn. He briefly mentioned it to Dwight, and it was supposed to be a little exposition to prepare us for what happens next.
(Yeah, I know. Still dumb. But I believe he thought it was a road that had flooded a little, and never believed the GPS would mislead him like it did.)
