The Next Great American Band--Auditions--10/19/07
Looks like this series is only 10 episodes. I watch Idol, so I'll give this a look.

The producers behind mega-hit phenomenon AMERICAN IDOL take the musical reality genre to a whole new performance level with a mission to find undiscovered groups on THE NEXT GREAT AMERICAN BAND. Singer/songwriter John Rzeznik (The Goo Goo Dolls), legendary percussionist and performer Sheila E. ("The Glamorous Life," "A Love Bizarre") and Australian TV personality Ian "Dicko" Dickson ("Australian Idol") serve as judges while Dominic Bowden ("New Zealand Idol") hosts. From tonight's auditions, Rzeznik, Sheila E. and Dickson will narrow down the hopefuls to 12 semifinalist bands who will perform either original music or covers of varied styles in front of a live studio audience. The judges will have their say after the performances each week, but viewers will vote for their favorite bands to determine who stays in the competition. Voting begins immediately after each show, and the results will be announced by Bowden at the start of the following episode. The season finale will bring the ultimate battle of the bands, with the last three groups competing to secure a contract with 19 Recordings and the title of Next Great American Band. It all begins when the first chord is struck in the "Auditions" episode of THE NEXT GREAT AMERICAN BAND premiering Friday, Oct. 19 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (IDB-101/102) (TV-PG L)
Judges: Johnny Rzeznik, Sheila E. and Ian "Dicko" Dickson

I thought Darrell Hammond did a good job as the British judge.

yea , and he told the truth , if the band was great but would not sell records ... he would say it outright. It seems that they were very truthful ... more than the other shows.

Pretty entertaining 1st show. I like how they kept the pacing nice and tight without showing alot of unneccessary fluff......with the exception of a few sob stories (the guy with no arms and the guy who had a stroke)
I like the Aussie judge "Dicko".....nice name by the way
. He really kept it real with alot of these bands.
At least Sheila E doesn't sugar coat her comments like Paula Abdul. I like how she expressed her disgust for that ridiculous KISS knockoff band Fifi something.
At the band from "Plutonia"
My favorite bands:
Six Wire: Good country pop sound
The Muggs: Good 70's Rock Sound
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra: Hate the name of the band, but they sounded good.
Rocket: This chick band was not bad.
The Likes of You
Frankin Bridge was okay, I wasn't going crazy over them. They sounded like a rock band version of Boyz II Men.

Good start to the show. One thing I didn't like was the mention of future genre theme shows. I think it's working pretty well just letting them play what they want. I like the mix of covers and originals. I hope the show catches on.

I didn't think Franklin Bridge was all that great. Guitar work was average at best. But a mix of Rock/R&B/Hip-Hop could be good, let's see if they improve.
Other than that, I have no problems with the final 12. pretty diverse. Wish we could have seen a bit more of the other bands that got a yes, but didn't make it all the way to the final 12.
I liked the Heavy Metal Hanson. their frontman doesn't have evolved pipes yet, but the rest of the band was solid.
i loved DickO's comments to the all-girl band: "you're not even the hottest chicks we've seen. well, except for you. No, not you. Her."
![LOL](/images/smilies/lol.gif)
How about when Sheila E. joined the latin band, stole the girl's drum solo, then told them "No"? hilarious!
i didn't get all the love for that frontman of the band that got two chances. he was non-descript, nothing special to remember. And he climbed the scaffolding. Dude, that's soooooo cliche.

Yea , i was overall happy with teh choices that they made and will be trying to watch at least 2 more episodes of this since really it is much better than the standard "lead singer" affair of idol and the other acts out there.
Sixwire ... while i really dont like country ... really was good and surprisingly fun to listen to.

It was silly the way they overpraised Franklin Bridge. I like their style and hope they do well, but the vocals were weak (especially the lead in the lower range) and the guitar work wasn't that impressive. I wouldn't mind the judges saying they were good and passing them through to the next round, but claiming they were far and away better than anything else we'd seen was crazy talk.
Rocket underwhelmed me. All-girl bands acting like they're a classic punk group is nothing new. They need to do something more to stand out, and Blitzkrieg Bop's not really a talent-showcasing song. They'll probably be gone early.
Light of Doom was sick. Replace the lead singer, and they could cut an album today. They can't win this competition, but I wonder if they stick together long enough to mature into their sound.
I enjoyed the show more than I thought I would, but it did feel like we were cheated out of a lot more rounds. Lots of talent here. I found I enjoyed the more country/folk/bluegrass acts like the Clark Brothers, the Zombies, Sixwire, and the Ol' #7, as they gave tighter performances, but I suspect they'll have a difficult time getting votes (except maybe Sixwire, who had a lot of pop in there).

ah, forgot about the zombie group. I thought they were really good. they definitely don't need the zombie schtick. Lots of Nashville acts made it through (it's not called Music City for nothing).
I agree, one more show to cut the choices down to 12 (as opposed to just announcing them at the end) would have been nice.
and i definitely agreed with their review of Denver and the Mile High Orchestra. Great sound, but the lead doesn't have that sex appeal that is often associated with big band/swing groups.

Looks like the ratings were pretty shitty. It finished dead last in both hours:
"Deal or No Deal," 6.2/12, led the 8 p.m. hour for NBC. CBS got a 5.8/11 from "Ghost Whisperer" to finish second. ABC came in third with "20/20." "Friday Night Smackdown!," 2.4/5, put The CW in fourth. The premiere of "The Next Great American Band" on FOX was far from a sellout, drawing a 2.0/4.
"Women's Murder Club," 6.5/12, moved ABC to the front of the pack at 9 p.m. CBS stayed in second with "Moonlight," 5.1/9, while "Friday Night Lights," 3.7/7, took third for NBC. "Smackdown!" kept The CW in fourth, and "American Band" improved a little to 2.3/4.

Too bad ... I kind of liked it. A lot of the "serious" bands sounded pretty good. Even "Light of Doom" ... damn good for 12/13 years old, though its a reach for this competition. Got kick out of the Bluegrass band taking on "Like a Virgin"

It actually does have an official site, but when you click it on FOX.com, it takes you to their MSN "Official Site."
Agreed that this was poorly promoted. Hopefully it won't turn out as bad as the ratings juggernaut "On the Lot."

I liked the show. Good mix of bands, and decent judges. Not sure why the host of The Next Great American Band is a Kiwi though.

This was surprisingly good. I'm a bit baffled why Fox gave this such a crummy treatment. They hyped it a bit on Idol last season but turn around and barely promote it when it actually airs. Then, they put in on Friday and debut it in the middle of the baseball playoffs when the schedule is confusing. In the very least this could have been a moderately successful summer show.

Loved the sign in the audience sign "I need a mugg shot" ![LOL](/images/smilies/lol.gif)
I agreed with Shiela E there was something creepy about seeing those kids without shirts on
I liked that they all covered Bob Dylan songs
but some of them were really butchered. I hated the "Like A Rolling Stone" rendition by that glam band DOT DOT DOT
The lead singer from Rocket girl group does have really weak vocals. One of the guitar players (the brunette) is really hot though
. I kept watching her instead of the singer ![Big Grin](/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
That 60's English retro band was pretty good
I this show is pretty entertaining. I don't understand why FOX dumped on friday night

Although maybe they could combine it with a "To Catch a Predator" special.
Where are the security police who stopped Jim Morrison when you need them?
Oh, well...it could have been worse. At least they didn't cover "Lay Lady Lay".
