Sit Down, Shut Up -- "Pilot" -- 04/19/09 (FOX's new animated series)

From Mitchell Hurwitz, creator of "Arrested Development" of course. FOX's newest animated series 4/19/09 @ 8:30pm EST.

Voices of:
Will Arnett
Jason Bateman
Henry Winkler
Kristin Chenoweth
Cheri Oteri
Will Forte
Tom Kenny
Nick Kroll
Kenan Thompson

Spoiler:
The show is set within the ranks of the supremely lame faculty of a small-town Florida high school, losing funds because of its poor performance on No Child Left Behind. At Knob Haven High every child is left behind, presumably because everyone on staff is bored and horny. The drama teacher is a sex-crazed bisexual; the German teacher is a porn addict (he calls his magazines “filthies” and wonders when he is spotted by students buying them, “Why didn’t I sign up for the Internet when I had the chance?”); the English teacher is a jock womanizer who speaks in intentionally idiotic double-entendres. A sign in the hallway reads: “Don’t Tempt a Teacher. It Could Cost Them Their Job.” The unlikable and not sexy librarian does Kegel exercises and talks about them.

Various male teachers are hot for Miracle Grohe, the one character in whom the show’s entire effort at commentary is compacted. Kristen Chenoweth provides her fantastically ditzy voice as if she were imagining herself doing Sarah Palin impersonating Marilyn Monroe. Miracle is the science teacher as creationist. When she wants to make the point that human beings didn’t descend from monkeys, she takes her clothes off. She is also obsessed with everything New Age, picking what she believes are spiritual flowers for her colleagues during spring break that turn out to be hemlock. When cuts have to be made to the budget, Miracle, a reactionary wing nut in every respect, suggests: “Science class should be the first to go. Everyone knows it’s a bunch of voodoo the Jews came up with so they could charge us for medicine and stuff.”

i got to say, i am not a big fan of primetime animated series and don't watch a one, but this one really intrigues me because i am a teacher. it seems like the anti-what to do in school show and the commercials really have me psyched for this show.

hell- i have and would never even use the term "Shut Up" to a student. i just have a good feeling about this one and wanted to see who is with me and if anyone has heard any early buzz.

i just hope FOX doesn't treat it like Hurwitz's other baby in AD. seems like 7 episodes are already done, so hopefully it goes well and people watch.

isn't it purposeful? kinda like how "King of the Hill" looks old school.

I'm going to watch it for sure. It looks funny and the people involved are all fantastic. But personally, I would have preferred if FOX kept King of the Hill on air instead of picking this up, but whatever.

This show is bound to get canceled though, which is unfortunate because it looks promising, thus leaving FOX's "Animation Domination" as just The Simpsons + 1.5 Hours of Seth McFarlane.

I forgot that Henry Winkler will break my knees if I don't email everyone to watch this show.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't think that Fox mistreated Arrested Development at all. For any show to go past 2 seasons on Fox is surprising, and they put a lot of advertisement behind the show, IIRC. In the end, viewership just wasn't there.

Sorry to rant, just sometimes feel like I'm the only one who feels the show had been given proper room to grow and find an audience, and went out just as strong as it went in. At least we got a series finale.

Back on topic, I'll check the new show out. Looks pretty good.

With the voice talent involved, it should definitely be worth a listen.

Seems like every review slammed this show...I'll likely DVR it but don't know if I'll get around to watching it.

Well that was certainly underwhelming, especially considering the talent involved. It seems a little too low-brow for my tastes.

They canceled King of the Hill and replaced it with this? Big let down...simply dreadful.

No kidding. KOTH had probably run its course but it was one of the best animated shows of all time and should have ended on its own terms. Even the worst episode of KOTH was better than this show!

I had no expectations because it was the first episode and I realize it may take a few episodes to start hitting its stride. I was still underwhelmed.

Re: Sit Down, Shut Up -- "Pilot" -- 04/19/09 (FOX's new animated series)

Well, my expectations were unrealistically high, given the talent involved. So it obviously fell short of that.

However, judged on its own merits (and not comparing it to "Arrested Development"), I thought it was generally fine, with more slow parts than funny parts. The "I need a catchphrase" line was funny, and there were other jokes that were kind of hit and miss. Just kind of some dumb fun, but nothing to get too worked up about. Overall, about a 5.5 or 6 out of 10.

Now, comparing it to AD, what I thought was odd was how Hurwitz could be involved in a show that's not really character-driven. Everybody is a caricature, and it seemed to be a race to end of the show, throwing out as many jokes, gags, etc. along the way as possible, hoping they were funny.

In fact, it almost seemed like Hurwitz's "response" to a network/audience that fawns over "Family Guy" and lets AD get canceled. Basically like saying"You want low-brow animation with no real characters or plot? Here you go. Laugh."

I'll give it another couple of episodes, but I don't have real high hopes for it.

But will the talent involved be its downfall? I'll bet they're commanding big $$$.
