'Pitchmen' on Discovery

If there is already a thread on this please merge or something, I didn't find one.

Last night was a marathon, or the debut of this show. I'm not sure which, but I watched several episodes.

It's about Billy Mays, the rather well known pitch man, and his producer/partner Anthony "Sully" Sullivan.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this show.

They both have HUGE egos, and it seemed they damn near came to blows over a shark repellent thing. They fight and bitch constantly while filming these things. It's hilarious.

Hell of a show to watch. You get a feel for how they select these products they pitch, how they film them, and how they track success.

Billy Mays seems like a giant dick from what I've seen of the show.

This show is great. It's been on for like 3 or 4 weeks. I hope there's a second season.

I enjoyed the first few episodes, but by episode four, I'd kind of lost interest.

Re: 'Pitchmen' on Discovery

watched a few episodes and it was ok. What became really obvious to me is that Billy Mays must spend THOUSANDS of dollars every month on Just for Men and Just for Men Gel for Mustaches and beards; his hair is totally unnaturally dark.

I enjoy watching the portion when all the folks come in and pitch their ideas/products. People come up with the craziest stuff sometimes. I agree that Billy and Sully are hard to deal with sometimes.

Billy and Sully are jack asses.

Most people who attain great success are that way, some are better at pretending or acting like they aren't.

That's the part of the show I like best.

Watching those two jack asses with their massive egos doing battle.

Re: 'Pitchmen' on Discovery

I wonder how much extra sales have resulted from this show. I know that those shoe inserts and that saw that can cut through the car look really cool.

The guy who invented the GPS cup, I'm just thinking...I've already got a beanbag for my Garmin that does the same thing.

But yeah, Billy Mays looks like he can be a butt and a diva. If my friend was chumming the waters for sharks while I was swimming, I'd knock his butt in the water without the Sharkaway (or whatever) and speed off in the boat.

This show reminds me of American Inventor, but without the fake "American Idol"-like pauses and drama.

So far I'm digging this show. Billy Mays is such a queen, it's hilarious. I was kind of disappointed to learn he doesn't invent this stuff himself. In hindsight, it was probably foolish for me to think he was anything but a pitchman, but I always figured he was this smart guy who came up with cool shit.

Do you really think that Billy was chumming the waters on his own initiative? That whole scene smelled like it was scripted by the Discovery writing team.

Re: 'Pitchmen' on Discovery

Did you see Billy leap back in a panic from the skunk and injure himself last night? That was funny.

That Bentley GT Billy drives was pretty sweet stuff for a 'pitchman'.

Another funny episode.

Maybe, but I thought the disclaimers were funny. Something like:

"Don't try this"
"Seriously, don't try this."
"This is not cool, don't do this"
"For the love of God, don't sue us by trying this."

Billy Mays comes off as a big douche, but I bet this show is making millions for their products. It makes me laugh.

Re: 'Pitchmen' on Discovery

I see Mays being self deprecating sometimes.
Besides so what if they have big egos and are divas,
this is what makes their whole shtick work.
the show overall is a hoot.
It's interesting to see a it of the process of these info mercials.
I saw the one for the, Saw a couple of nights ago.

Also what a brillliant move to do a show on info-mercials.
It's essentially a commercial for their commercials.

A Queen, are you sure that's what you mean.?

I'd like to know what happened to the original
Infomercial guys from maybe 15 or so years ago.

There was one guy Mike who had info shows that were
pretending to be tv shows with an audience talking about products.
He always had a sidekick that was usually a Brit or an Aussie.

Sorry...he died over 5 years ago. I could make some sweater joke, but too soon, man, too soon. Well, he's on Facebook apparently.

They need to fix the damn bubble of dead pixels that show up on the screen every once and a while. Am I the only one seeing it?

Re: 'Pitchmen' on Discovery

Uhh...well consider the show canceled. Billy Mays has died.

http://www.tmz.com/2009/06/28/billy-mays-is-dead/
TMZ has confirmed TV pitchman Billy Mays was found dead today in his home in Tampa, Florida.

According to the Tampa PD, Mays was pronounced dead at 7:45 AM.

The 50-year-old was found by his wife early this morning.

TMZ has learned Mays' body has already been removed from his home.

There are reports that Mays had just returned from Philadelphia, where he shot a new Oxiclean commercial.

We're told Mays was at his home around 6pm last night, and according to a source Mays was "acting fine and normal ... he was talking business with his father-in-law."

Re: 'Pitchmen' on Discovery

Will they have to scrap all of his informercials? It'd be weird buying something from a dead pitchman. Not to say it hasn't happened in the past, but, still weird if cognizant of the facts.

Re: 'Pitchmen' on Discovery

I doubt a new episode will play on Wednesday (if Discovery does not pull the show altogether which may happen).
