Conan can't HOST a new show until September...but that doesn't mean he can't be on one...I'm expecting we'll see him popping up on a lot of other people's shows in the meantime, and perhaps even doing some exclusive Internet stuff.

As for the future, I fully expect FOX to give him the 11pm to 12pm slot starting in September. The biggest problem is going to be for some FOX affiliates who have syndication deals with other shows in that time slot - so some people in certain parts of the country may have to see Conan at a different hour (or not at all) until all the affiliates have fulfilled other obligations. Last I heard, about 70% of FOX stations would be "clear" to run a new Conan show in the 11pm slot starting in September.

He would have plenty of time to do a SNL, and I hear he's in tight with the guy who runs it. Plenty ironic if it were to happen (probability low).

I just don't see a show starting with 70% clearance. That would be a sure way to invite unfavorable comparisons to Letterman and Leno, I'd think.

I like the idea of HBO creatively, and I think it would create a situation where he wouldn't be judged by exactly the same yardstick as the others are.

It would of sucked if NBC owned the rights of Conan's hairstyle.

He would get more clearance than that, just not at 11pm. Letterman started on CBS with 67% clearance at 11:30, but was carried by 98% of the affiliates.

That was when somebody could count on 20 months to establish himself on The Tonight Show, though. It seems we're in a far more cutthroat era now.

He can't be on any show, in any capacity? So basically he agreed to be a shut in?

Just curious as to where you found that info.

Yeah, I had read that as well. I think they called it a "cooling off period" or something.

I think people feel bad for Conan for the situation of it all. I for one am not sad for Conan because of the money he recieved. Him and his family will be fine for a long time. I do feel bad for Conan for what NBC and Leno did to him.

Just my $0.02

I honestly can't find the link at this time, but it did pop up on a couple sites yesterday, who knows if it's legit.

Exactly. He could've left NBC 5 years ago and moved to another network with a lucrative contract but instead stayed because he wanted his dream job. At that time, Leno seemed to be content (at least on that show) that he'd retire. So, NBC didn't want to lose Conan but when the 5 years was up, they didn't want to lose Leno either.

What I find funny (and sad) about all this is the deal was made to AVOID what happened in 1992 and instead it was arguably even more of a clusterfuck in that you had people like Letterman, Kimmell, Stewart and Cobert having a field day of the situation (I know it was huge in '92 since a legend was being replaced and NBC went against Carson's choice).

Whatever his new show ends up being, I just hope he has an all new band, announcer, etc. Moving to yet another show, and still having Richter, Weinberg, and the same band, would just be too much of the same.

If he gets a new show, I hope things are different and NEW.

I wonder how far that goes, though. Can he go to the Academy Awards and sit in the audience? Can he go out to a restaurant and risk being taped by TMZ or somebody? I'd guess he can't book anything. If he's at a Laker game and they pan up to his seat, no foul.

I love Andy in his TV shows and as a side kick but didn't like him as an announcer, it didn't work.

I like Weinberg too much to wish him off the show.

I think the plan is probably to have everybody they had. I don't think you'll see much tinkering with the format. This is a pretty long layoff, though. I'm guessing people (behind the scenes or on camera) might end up moving on just because they want to work. The desire to work is one of the least well acknowledged human desires. Not working eats at a man in my experience. A month will probably pass just like a nice long vacation, but more than that seems to drive people a little stir crazy.

What makes you think they won't start working soon? If Conan signs another deal soon, they can start production in a month or so. Pretape bits, etc... In the last show they had a 3 month layoff between shows, IIRC.

There might be the ability to start on some things that soon, maybe not. We've had that controversy in this thread already. I tend to agree with you some things can be done, but I don't think it's anything like a 40 hour a week job.

The last gap was 3 months, but it included a move from NY to LA. This will be 7 months, and we've not heard yet that there will be any move (though I am personally rooting for NYC, I kind of doubt it).

The "Triumph the Insult Comic Dog" character is the joint property of Robert Smigel and NBC/Universal.

Re: NBC: let's see how low we can go (Conan thread, part 2)

Re: Conan's bad ratings losing money for NBC

I can't find the article now because I've read so many from so many different places in the last couple weeks.

But when this first came out about how Conan's Tonight Show was losing money, I read an article pointing out that Conan's rating were similar to what Letterman's had been for years when he was #2 or #3 in the time-slot, and that the charge for ads on Conan's show was not very different from what they were charging for ads on Letterman.

So, the writer asked, if Letterman's show had been making money for CBS all those years, how could NBC claim that Conan was suddenly losing money for them?
