Steve Carell says next season of The Office will "probably be my last"
As reported at the Onion AV
There’s always been speculation that Steve Carell would leave The Office for the greener pastures of the big screen once his contract is up, but BBC Radio may have confirmed it. In an interview with Carell and Date Night co-star Tina Fey, he was asked about returning to the series, about which he had this to say:
Question: How long will you stay with The Office for? How many more series? How long does your contract run?
Carell: Contract through next season.
Question: And will you stay after that?
Carell: I don’t think so. I think that will probably be my last year

If Carell leaves, the Office is over.

Its been ridiculous since the beginning...thats what makes this show great! Sadly, I would still wanna see this show continue without him, but I just dont think it will work w/o Michael Scott.

Agreed. Although, that would probably be for the best anyways.
Years ago, I seem to remember an interview with Carell where he stated that despite the offerings of Hollywood films, he would still remain loyal to The Office and the character of Michael Scott. I wonder if now he figures that the show may soon run it course?
The Onion ran a pretty good report of the documentary crew being satisfied with the footage collected until now, and have now ceased production.

SCRANTON, PA—After nearly six years on the air, NBC's hit show The Office ended abruptly Thursday when documentary filmmaker Ian Sheffield announced that he and his crew had all the footage of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company's Scranton branch required for their project. "In retrospect, we really over-shot this thing by an enormous margin," said Sheffield, adding that he likely had more than enough good material after filming a British workplace from 2001 to 2003. "We would have finished much earlier if one employee or another didn't insist on being interviewed every three minutes. And I have no idea why we were invited to Jim and Pam's wedding. All of that stuff is totally unusable." Sheffield said that the footage will be drastically cut down and used primarily as B-roll for the planned 90-minute educational film about paper manufacture and production.

Certain characters have stayed very consistent throughout the entire run of the show, but some, Michael especially, has gotten more and more ridiculous as the show went on.
I can't pinpoint the exact moment but I don't think it was until probably season 3 that Michael really started to become a buffoon.

Time to close shop. Id rather they end it with him, than to drag it along without him.

No, it's been getting progressively more ridiculous since season 2. Season 1 was as "realistic" as The Office can be. Season 2 was slightly sillier, season 3 sillier still and by the time season 4 came around, it became downright ridiculous.

I still enjoy the show, but I agree that it has just about run its course. Keep in mind though that this is just Carrell talking in an interview. NBC might dump a truckload of money on him and keep the show on with him as the star, or he might not get any better offers by the time the contract ends.

I'm ok with this. There are so many great comedies on tv right now - I can live without the office.

The show has already gotten ridiculous. Time to end it and soon too.
This and Desperate Housewives have run their course.

I too think that its best days are behind it. I'd support having next year be its final season.

I haven't been able to get into any other sitcoms.
Actually, I barely watch any tv at all. I really only watch The Office, 24, which will be ending, V, which will also most likely be ending, Heroes, which will be ending and the cooking shows--Hell's Kitchen and Top Chef.
I mean if I don't start watching more shows, by Christmas of next year all I'll be watching is Hell's Kitchen and Top Chef as everything else on my list will have ended.

Assuming everything else I watch gets at least another season after next, I've still got "Parks & Recreation," "Community," "Modern Family," "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia," "How I Met Your Mother," "The New Adventures Of Old Christine," and "The League." Not to mention "Louie" is about to start on FX and I'm sure we'll see another show or two pop up that is worthwhile.
Sure, some of them aren't as good as they used to be (I'm looking at you HIMYM), but there's still plenty of great comedy on television (Parks & Rec, Modern Family, and It's Always Sunny being the top three, easily, even with The Office still on air).
