YALT: Is Lost worth watching?

Re: YALT: Is Lost worth watching?
My wife and I started watching it for the first time last year. We got halfway through season 4 and sorta lost interest. Probably because my wife doesn't watch science fiction and the time travel element "Lost" her.
Good series though, looks great on blu.

Watch the pilot. If it sucks you in within the first half hour (as it did me, and many other people), your decision will be made for you. If it doesn't, I wouldn't bother.

I say no because the lousy ending makes everything you've watched not worth your time. If it wasn't for that, it was an excellent show. Is it worth watching a great show that is ruined by the ending (and I mean the entire last season and some would even say the last 3 seasons)? That's something you have to decide for yourself.

Figured I'd check this thread out before various spoilers likely make their way in. I've watched the first 2 seasons just this summer for the first time and have really enjoyed it. I have a hard time understanding the view of someone at the conclusion of a long series saying something wasn't worth it. Sure some shows don't offer the closure that'd we'd like to have, but for me it's impossible for a finale that doesn't measure up to take away the joy I received as I watched all the previous episodes/seasons.

Nope. None of the characters are intrigue – not a single character. There are so many dumb moments on all characters. As for an example - Claire attached a note on sea gull to send the message to mainland, she attached the note without plastic bag or cover. Hello? IT’S FUCKING SEA GULL AND IT LAND AND SWIM IN FUCKING OCEAN AND THEY CAN KISS THE FUCKING NOTE GOODBYE!!!! And the plots are so predictable. I don’t want to give an example to give any “surprises” away for anyone who hasn’t watched it.
I only watched it because my co-workers pushed me to watch it. After first disc, I hated it and they kept insisted it will get better. So, I kept watch the whole season and I still hate it. They said no, keep watch and it will get better. But it got worse and worse.
It’s amazing how many people like this show…

I have mixed feelings on this. I enjoyed the series while watching it (started in S2 after S1 on dvd). I think part of what made it good was the continual fan discussions and late night discussions with friends theorizing what was going to happen next.
However, the ending really does give a new focus to the entire show and it's not something that was clear to the viewer while watching. The ending itself seems to really put people in two camps - loved it or, disliked it and now view the entire series as worthless. I'm still on the fence personally. I think the finale was fitting, but it also felt wanting.
If you're leaning towards watching I'd just say go in and try to have lower expectations as you do. Don't necessarily expect to get to the end and think it's the best all around series you've ever seen.

Yes, without having to wait year after year, the storyline moves quite well and is very enjoyable throughout.

It's all about the journey, not the destination. If you watch the show waiting for some brilliant answers to the mysteries posed, you'll most likely end up disappointed. For me, the fun of the show was the characters/performances and exploring the mysteries. LOST also had some of the best cinematography I've seen on TV.

Great start that continually goes downhill over the course of six seasons. Watch the first 3 or 4 and then read summaries of the last couple.

This is what I did. I watched all the way until the season 5 finale. I had that on the dvr until season 6 started and saved the first few episodes. Then after reading about the new episodes I deleted everything and just read about the ending. Based on the ending the whole show is about nothing.

When I read posts from people who call it an "epic disappointment" or a "lousy ending", I can only conclude that no ending could have satisfied their expectations. I found the show to be brilliant, and the characters very intriguing. Was every nitpicky "mystery" answered? No. But then, most of them were never intended as mysteries anyway, other than in the minds of the fans.
Personally, I found that the conclusion answered all of the questions that needed to be answered, and brought closure to all of the characters in a very satisfactory way.
I plan to buy the complete series box set on Blu-ray when it comes out, and I'm going to watch it all again from the start.

I enjoyed it the first time through for the most part. A lot of the fun was discussing the episodes/mysteries with other people, not sure if I would have kept up if it wasn't for that. I don't have any interest in watching it a second time though.

Why did you buy it? I say RENT IT. For the cost of the Blu-ray season sets you could have several months of Netflix.

You know, I'd say watch it, but yes, the final season really was a letdown.
I think what might help watching it now, is that there won't be this constant chatter about the latest episode and what ever little detail means. There won't be any more articles about how the writers will explain everything and that all the mysteries will remain grounded in reality (they don't!).
Season 1 was amazing, and I'd say once you get sucked in you'll want to see where it ends, no matter what.

It's worth it until the end. It sucks when you realize that you're really the one who has been conned.

Before the finale, I figured I'd get the complete set and watch it all again right away in August. But even though I enjoyed the finale, I'm now not going to get the complete set right away, and will probably wait a few years to watch it again.
That said, I'm still VERY glad to have watched it from beginning to end. Part of the enjoyment was going through these threads every week, but even without that it's still very much worth it, IMO.
