Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

The BBC announces the name of the 50th Anniversary special as well as other anniversary festivities:

BBC Announce Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Schedule Including The Title Of The Special, Documentaries And Restored Episodes

The BBC have announced the schedule for all the programmes that will be shown to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who this year, and it’s a packed schedule of treats for Doctor Who fans.

First there’s the previously announced special, which will run to seventy-five minutes and it was announced today will be called The Day of the Doctor.

There will also be a one-off drama called An Adventure In Space and Time, which has been written by Mark Gatiss and will star David Bradley as William Hartnell. To coincide with this BBC Four will be showing the first ever Doctor Who story, premiering the four episodes in a restored format not previously broadcast in the UK.

Professor Brian Cox will present a lecture show on BBC Two on the science behind the show and BBC Two will also show a Culture Show special entitled Me, You and Doctor Who. The Culture Show special will be presented by Matthew Sweet and will explore the cultural significance of Doctor Who.

BBC Radio 2 will also get in on the action with a special show entitled Who Is The Doctor?, featuring newly recorded interviews and exclusive archive recording.

From the sound of it this is just the main schedule of programming with more to come – the report at the BBC mentions that “BBC Three will be home to several commissions” – so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more on that and air dates for all of these shows.
The Anniversary Special finally has a name and length.

Has a date been announced? I'm assuming BBC America will be broadcasting this on the same day as the BBC.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

It'll be broadcast on the actual anniversary date - Nov. 23rd. Simultaneously in the United States. Don't think a time has been announced yet. Hopefully, it'll be at 5:15 pm just like in 1963.

This episode was shot in 3D (the last for the BBC) so the UK is getting a 3D broadcast as well as cinema showings.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

BBC America confirmed a while back that the 50th anniversary special would air on Saturday, November 23, the same day as the UK. The channel's press site confirms this date, but there is no mention of a time yet. BBC America also announced it is premiering the new fantasy series "Atlantis" on November 23, presumably right after the Who special.

An Adventure in Space and Time is listed for November on BBC America's press site, with no specific date. Starting this Saturday, BBC America is airing Torchwood: Miracle Day and an encore of Orphan Black S1 from 9-11pm for 10 weeks (ending November 16), so AAISAT cannot air during that timeslot in November.

If I had to guess, Sunday, November 24 from 8-10pm feels like a good place for AAISAT -- this would allow BBC America to promote a "Doctor Who 50th anniversary weekend," with the new special on Saturday in primetime, followed by AAISAT on Sunday in primetime.

We'll probably also get the final Doctor Who Revisited episode that weekend as well.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

I forgot about Matt Smith's Doctors Revisited special!

I'll slightly revise my guess -- I think either the final Doctors Revisited or An Adventure in Space and Time will air on Sunday, November 17 in primetime as the launch of "Doctor Who week" on BBC America, with the other special airing on November 24. Since the channel has the rights to all new Who episodes, and interest will be high with the 50th anniversary, having a full week of nonstop Who from November 17-24 seems logical.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

From what's been said, the only Doctors participating will be Matt Smith and David Tennant. John Hurt is also involved as Doctor 8.5 (or as 9.1). Past Doctors (T. Baker, Davison, C. Baker, McCoy and McGann) have said that they are not part of the special. Speculation says Paul McGann will get a mini-episode before the Special but that hasn't been proven (yet). Other rumors say that the Past Doctors will be represented in paintings or clips from the past.

As happy as I am to see Tennant in the role again, I'd love 10-20 minutes of McGann screen time.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

More info on the celebrations:

ON #BBCTWO:
- In a special one-off programme, Professor Brian Cox will try to answer the classic questions raised by the Doctor – can you really travel in time? Does extra-terrestrial life exist in our galaxy? And how do you build something as fantastical as the TARDIS?

-The Culture Show will present ‘Me, You and Doctor Who’ with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama, arguing that it’s one of the most important cultural artefacts of modern Britain.

- BBC Two will then wrap up its coverage with the previously announced ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ written by Mark Gatiss

ON BBC Three:
-’Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend’ will countdown to the top Doctor Who monster as voted for by you.

- ‘Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide’ will introduce those less familiar to the show to a wealth of archive material and act as a guide to all things Who.

- We also have one further exciting commission to be announced later this year which will see the celebrations finish with a bang.

ON #BBCFOUR:
- Audiences will be introduce audiences to the first Doctor, William Hartnell, with a special re-run of the first ever story, which marked the start of 50 years of history. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

There will also be programmes across #CBBC including two live #BluePeter specials.

ON BBC Radio 1:
- A documentary will look at ‘Time Lord Rock (TROCK)’ as a genre of music inspired by the Doctor and his journeys through space and time.

ON BBC Radio 2
- ‘Who is the Doctor’ will look at the lasting appeal of Doctor Who and ask how much of its continued success can be attributed to its basic formula.

- In ‘The Blagger’s Guide to Doctor Who’, David Quantick will give the iconic Doctor the Blagger’s treatment. He’ll be finding out the answers to questions such as why do Americans think Tom Baker is still Doctor Who? How many Doctors have there really been? Were the Daleks really named after an encyclopaedia?

- Finally, Graham Norton will be broadcasting his weekly Radio 2 show live (Saturday 23 November, 10am) from the Doctor Who Celebration in London.
And the official 50th poster:

So no revelation about missing episode recoveries. Thought it was a hoax a few months back..... a pretty big one too.

I would be very surprised if that rumor ended up true after all the shenanigans that ensued. Rich Johnson is still going to say "Wait til November" to his dying breath.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

Blame Moffat. He:

- Wrote an anniversary script that (as far as we know) does not feature any Doctors outside of 10 & 11. Colin Baker, Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy expressed interest in being involved.

- Waited until the last minute to send a script to Christopher Eccleston and refused to make any changes to accommodate him. So Eccleston passed. Now we have Doctor 8.5 (Hurt).

- Gave us a late, truncated, split season because he had (self-admitted) writer's block. This especially shows for the second half of Series 7.

- Publicly fired the show's Executive Producer and promised to "write her out of Doctor Who history." The 2 previous Executive Producers left after the Series 6 split-season.

- Got into several Twitter flameouts before deleting his account.

Moffat is the BBC's golden child right now thanks to Doctor Who and Sherlock. And from production reports, he likes to flaunt that attitude.

It's all over the place. People on Gallifrey Base, Bleeding Cool and Ian Levine's Facebook keep track of him like he's Lindsay Lohan. I'd have to remember where specific stuff was. Tho I did read one of his rants before he shut down his Twitter.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special

Forgot to mention that Big Finish Audio has begun their 50th Anniversary specials today with the release of the 5th Doctor story "1963: FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MEN" in which the Doctor investigates the disappearance of The Beatles from time. This is followed by next month's "1963: THE SPACE RACE" with the 6th Doctor and November's "1963: THE ASSASSINATION GAMES" featuring the 7th.

Also in November, they release their official 50th Anniversary story "THE LIGHT AT THE END" featuring Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann.

The limited edition version is 5-discs and includes a Companion Chronicles story read by William Russell as Ian Chesterton. I believe it's only available with this set.

November will also see an individual Companion Chronicles release called "THE BEGINNING" read by Carole Ann Ford as Susan Foreman.

And finally, there's a "TRIAL OF THE VALEYARD" special release in December.

OK, so going over these claims again.

This is true, but Moffat isn't doing it to disrespect the past Doctors. He was the first to bring the past Doctors into the NuWho, with writing Peter Davison's Doctor into the short Time Crash. He's also shown all the doctors in his first episode as show runner, and in the last episode before this one.

I believe his stated reason is that he doesn't want the episode to be unfocused, as the stories with multiple Doctors often seem to be.

This doesn't appear to be true, or at least is unverifiable. All I can find is news that came out in April that Eccleston was asked, but then declined. It doesn't state when he was asked, or why he declined. it's possible he was asked well in advance of even Series 7, and he declined for reasons other than timing or changing the script.

This, also is either untrue or at least unverifiable. From one article about the split season:
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question...5081418AAbTH9I
BBC Merseyside's Religious Editor Wayne Clarke reporting: "Danny Cohen says there won't be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012, but a special run for the anniversary in 2013". The BBC's Entertainment Correspondent Liza Mzimba confirmed the comments this evening, adding that other reported comments by Cohen on the decision being made to enable head writer Steven Moffat more time to write his other hit series Sherlock were light-hearted and not meant to be taken seriously.
There are rumors that the split was due to budget cuts at the BBC:
http://www.airlockalpha.com/node/854...-season-7.html

These budget cuts were responsible for Doctor Who Confidential getting the ax:

This is a mix of untruths and rumor. Publically, Caroline Skinner has "moved on" to a new job:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho...ducer-Moves-On

There's speculation on "true" motivations in this article, but it's just speculation:
http://www.blastr.com/2013-3-13/rumo...utive-producer

The quote "write her out of doctor who history" doesn't exist anywhere on the internet aside from this thread.

He did delete his Twitter account, although the official line is because Twitter was a distraction, although that didn't stop people from speculating about "annoying fans" driving him away:
http://www.blastr.com/2012/09/annoyi...drive_whos.php

From an interview he gave earlier this year:
http://www.kasterborous.com/2013/01/...witter-return/
If I took to heart all the stuff that was said about me on Twitter I’d be extremely happy because most of it is very, very nice indeed.

It’s just… well, I need as few distractions as possible. Writing is hard and sometimes rather dull so I just need to isolate myself from all that.
As for the "flameouts" on Twitter prior to his deletion, from what I can find, they don't appear to be much more than typical Twitter arguments, with Moffat not being aggressive or argumentative. If there was a copy of the supposed "rant" available, maybe that would illuminate it some.

It's on other websites. Not just this one. I wouldn't make an outlandish statement like that up. It may not have been phrased exactly like that but it was definitely along those lines. If you're really feel like sleuthing further, dig into the Gallifrey Base or Planet Skaro forums.

Many of the sites you link to also borderline on rumor and speculation. Other sites lean toward Moffat with a bloated ego. Some lean toward him being a saint. Either way, the information is out there. Take from it what you will.

All I know is when RTD was in charge, we had a new series every year and two spin-off shows running concurrently. With Moffat in charge, not so much. The 50th could have been so much more.

No thanks. If such a quote only appears in forums, it's likely just rumor. Officially and publically, Caroline Skinner was not fired.

The sites I linked to border on rumor and speculation, but they also make clear which is which. They're also not the only sites with this info, just the ones I chose to link to because I liked their stories best. I could link to more "respectable" sites with the same official news.

As for "the information is out there," I think I've made it clear that the supposed "information" is just rumor, and the rumors you "take from" are clearly ones with an anti-Moffat stance.

So now Moffat isn't just responsible for Doctor Who, but also for getting Torchwood cancelled, and for Elisabeth Sladen's death?

I've pre-ordered The Light at the End from Big Finish. Very excited for that one.

As for the BBC 50th special, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I do wish they had gotten at least McGann and McCoy involved, though.
