I'm sure the new cast will be great, but like malichai I can't help feel that they are all a BIG step down from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Guess I just expected more.

I think part of what was cool about S1 was that it featured two movie stars we weren't expecting to be on TV (okay Woody had done Cheers, but that was ages ago). I'm okay with Farrell, like him in some stuff and maybe Vaughn will be interesting. But Elizabeth Moss? Look, I like her as an actress and find her interesting on Mad Men. In fact she was probably the best thing on the show this past half-season. But she's been on TV solidly for over a decade. She competed for two Best Actress Emmys last year. Hell, I saw her on TV last night on that awful live Bravo wrap up show my wife watches in bed. She's not someone we need to see on a TV program, especially this soon. If the timing sets up right, she would be on opposite herself Sunday nights next Spring. We don't need that at all. Hope they find someone else.

Woody Harrelson is stoked to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy, but he's casting his vote for his “True Detective” co-star Matthew McConaughey.
“It's flattering to be nominated,” he said in a statement given to TheWrap, “but I have to throw my vote to Matthew, who I thought delivered the best performance of his life. Which is saying something.”

Lots of talent.
Edit: Good lord, the True Detective backlash is strong.
We have 5 actors, 3 primary movie actors and 2 TV actors, and of those two, one has been emmy nominated and just got done with the critically acclaimed Top of the Lake.

Moss was great in Top of the Lake, so I can see why they're courting her. I wouldn't mind seeing Vaughn in this -- especially knowing Pizzolatto wrote the part with him in mind.

The Wrap has more details. Farrell is reportedly close to signing on. Kitsch is still being courted as the young male lead.
Elisabeth Moss is being considered for the female lead. Michelle Forbes from The Killing and Orphan Black is also being courted for a part.
Vaughn is also mentioned as previously noted earlier.

I'm actually cool with Vince, but PLEASE, no Michelle Forbes - after True Blood, The Killing, and Orphan Black, she's more than a little over-exposed right now. At least Vince would be a fresh face for a TV series.

Re: True Detective (HBO) -- Season 2 News, Rumors
Season two of HBO’s critically-acclaimed drama “True Detective” won’t be quite as dark as the first, according to HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, who spoke at the Guardian International Television Festival in Edinburgh Thursday.
The second season (again scripted by creator Nic Pizzolatto) will feature a new story and cast of characters, led by three cops — a woman and two men, said Lombardo, according to HuffPost UK. But just because the new story isn’t necessarily as dark as the first, don’t expect it to be all sunshine and rainbows, either.
“It’s still dark,” Lombardo said at the festival. “Nic explores the darkness in people’s souls…. It’s not as dark, but it’s not a light ride. Nic likes looking into the crevices of the soul.”
Filming is expected to begin in California in September, and while the first season’s episodes were directed exclusively by Cary Fukunaga (who is nominated for a best directing Emmy for his work), the second season’s duties will be split among multiple helmers, according to Lombardo.
The network has yet to confirm any cast members for the new season, but a number of potential names have been rumored in conjunction with the roles, including Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch.
“True Detective” is nominated for five Emmy awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Hmmm, that means it would miss the window for the next Emmys (though this year taught us that waiting over a year for Emmy consideration isn't necessarily a bad thing). I still think they shoot for May if at all possible for that eligibility period.

That doesn't surprise me. I don't know how they can churn out another season by next Spring when the roles haven't even been cast yet.

HBO likes to get their entire seasons in the can before they hit air, so it's not surprising that the airdate is being pushed to summer. Takes roughly 7-8 days to film 1 hour. So if they could feasibly get the entire season in the can by the Holidays (with production breaks) if they are indeed filming 8 episodes again. Then you have to take in account post production as well.
24: Live Another Day started filming around late January/Early February of this year, for a May airdate, but they were filming all the way through June & had 12 episodes to film.

HBO has business considerations as well. Their goal is to keep you subscribed to HBO (and of course, get new subscribers). Thus, putting all their hits on at one time wouldn't make sense. They need to spread them out so you stay subscribed. Game of Thrones will be running in the spring. True Blood is a goner. True Detective is a (somewhat) known quantity at this point and can anchor a portion of the year.

I doubt making the emmy window is a high priority. They're going to run into the same situation next year with Mad Men that they did this year with Breaking Bad.

Seth Meyers recently joked at the Emmys that every actor in town was rumored to be attached to True Detective Season 2. But no director names have emerged as legitimate candidates to helm episodes in the show's second season. Until now.
Multiple sources tell THR that Justin Lin, who rejuvenated the creaky Fast & Furious series into a high-octane premium franchise, is in talks to direct two episodes of HBO's critically acclaimed anthology series.
The talks are characterized by insiders as being in the early stages with many details, including budgets and vision, still needing to be worked out.
The move is a departure from Season 1, which was helmed entirely by Cary Fukunaga, who took home the Emmy for best director of a drama series. Fukunaga will not return for a second season, nor will stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
Season 2, which is being penned by creator Nic Pizzolatto, is said to be California-based and revolve around three lead characters. Colin Farrell is among a list of actors whose names have been bandied about as possible leads. Farrell is close to a deal, sources say. Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn are also said to be in talks.
The new season is to be directed by a cadre of directors, some of which could direct one or two episodes. But the pressure to find directors is on as filming is scheduled to begin later in September.
It is unclear which two episodes of the eight-episode season Lin would direct though some sources say it could be the first two.
In addition to his busy film career (he most recently directed Fast & Furious 6), Lin is involved in a number of upcoming TV projects including Scorpion for CBS. On the film front, he is attached to direct the next installment in Universal's Bourne franchise and Toymaggedon.
Lin is repped by CAA and Cinetic.
HBO declined to comment.

Re: True Detective (HBO) -- Season 2 News, Rumors
I finally got round to watching the first season last week. The leads were all great, but i did not feel the series as a whole brought anything new to the table. A couple of stand out episodes, but by the end i was left a little under whelmed. I guess it could not live up to all the hype and people saying one of the best TV shows of all time. Good.....but not that good.

Justin Lin is a decent choice, though I haven't seen him make a really 'heavy' movie of any kind. Even Better Luck Tomorrow was lighter in tone.

No cast has been confirmed by the network but Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn are in final negotiations to join the show. The fourth lead, which has always been intended to be a female character, is still being figured out but sources say “Mad Men” actress Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams are in the running .
I'm all about McAdams for this!

Oh yeah. Me too. I think she's great sometimes and unlike Elizabeth Moss, hasn't been on my TV continuously for the past decade.

One of the HBO suits said they were going to announce the main cast "next week" over a month ago. This is getting ridiculous.

I wonder what the hold up is. You're not trying to clear Brad Pitt's schedule any more. Just announce already.
Honestly I'm surprised they didn't land bigger names -- I figured this would be everyone's next must-do HBO project (like The Normal Heart or Behind the Candelabra). Though McAdams would be a pretty big "get" if she ends up on board.
