Re: 2014 Television Golden Globe Nominees Announced

List is copied from Movie forum, but figured TV needed its own thread. As Rich C (who posted the original list) pointed out, there's a surprising but refreshing complete absence of Modern Family here.

Personally my favorite showdown is in Best Actress in Miniseries of TV Movie with Francis McDormond vs Allison Tolman playing the Francis McDormond part in Fargo.

Man, I'm getting out of touch. Of the shows nominated for best series I only watch Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley.

Weird that True Detective falls into Miniseries category here when it was in the Drama category at the Emmys. I guess since they got burned there, HBO figured this would be the safer choice. Honestly think without Br Ba in the running, TD would have cleaned up this year.

The absence of Mad Men is a pretty big surprise. I think (if nothing else) it's a more deserving nominee than the snooze-fest that is The Affair.

The Affair doesn't have previous seasons to live up to like Mad Men does. Plus I picture half of the 90 HFPA members are snooty french dudes.

So Tatiana Maslany can't even get a Golden Globe nomination this year.

She received a SAG nomination for Best Actress, that's way better than a Golden Globe nom.

seriously. of all the shows listed, not just nominated for best series but every one of them in OP, i've only seen Game of Thrones, True Detective, and Homeland. i mean, not even a single episode just to try out of one of the others.

I've seen and enjoyed those and can add recommendations for both Fargo and True Detective. Fargo was surprisingly great, and I actually prefer it to the much more hyped True Detective.

The only other shows from the nomination list I've seen are:
Homeland - Decent enough and better this current season, but actually think the show would be better if the nominee Claire Daines wasn't in it.
Girls - Couldn't stand it...terrible.
Derek - Not awful, but not Gervais' best work.

I'm intrigued by what little I know about Orange is the New Black and would like to eventually give it a try, but to date I don't even know where it is broadcast.

Orange is the New Black is a Netflix show, and only available on Netflix right now (though I think you can "buy" the episodes as well. But since you can get a free Month of Netflix very easily these days, there's no reason for that.) It isn't really "broadcasted" per se, because when the season starts, they put up every episode of the season all at once.

That explains a lot. Time to ask my kids whose Netflix account they are using.

Season 2 of Orphan Black was weaker than Season 1, so that's not necessarily a surprise.

Good luck getting a nomination if you aren't on HBO or another premium cable net.

On the main stage it's pretty even:

Jane the Virgin is on the CW (Broadcast)
Good Wife is on CBS (Broadcast)
Downton Abbey is on PBS (Broadcast)

Game of Thrones (Premium - HBO)
Girls (Premium - HBO)
The Affair (Premium - SHO)
Silicon Valley (Premium - HBO)

House of Cards (Internet - Netflix)
Orange is the New Black (Internet - Netflix)
Transparent (Internet - Amazon.com).

Seems fairly even, Basic Cable got shut out.

Throwing in Mini-series/Movies it definitely leads toward premium cable, since they generally do the most Mini-series and movies. Though I will say my favorite one of those was also on basic cable (Fargo - FX).

Thanks! I actually do watch True Detective (and loved it), I didn't notice that it was in the mini-series category originally. I've been meaning to get into Fargo too. I'm currently in the middle of Broadchurch and think I'll bang out Fargo right after.

I think Fargo is the best thing I've seen on TV this year.

Agreed on the season being weaker, but not because of her. Only "Tony" wasn't up to snuff, and that wasn't really her fault; it was just a bad idea. I'm just surprised b/c usually the Golden Globes will reward smaller shows like this. She got nominated last year.

I'm surprised Transparent and Jeffrey Tambor got nods. Great show and Tambor was terrific. But I thought there would have been snubs for them.

I watch quite a few shows yet not surprised that none of them would be on such a list. Appears I really don't watch the type of programs that get awards.

The mini-series category for Actor is rough but I hope Martin Freeman wins for Fargo.
