Re: Better Call Saul (S1E07) -- "Bingo" -- 3/16/15

Awesome yet again. The scenes with the Kettleman's were fun to watch just for how kooky they (mostly Betsy) were. She was so delusional thinking that Craig was going to get off with no charges whatsoever and it was great watching Jimmy try and make her realize how batshit she is. I give her credit for calling out Jimmy for taking their bribe from earlier but the way he went about resolving that was great. The way he hired Mike to break into their home and steal back the money was great as was the scene where he revealed what he had done. Jimmy and Mike really do make a great team.

I also liked Jimmy and Kim touring the office that he wanted to lease for his law firm and I felt for him at the end seeing how crushed he was about returning the money and realizing he can't afford it anymore. The bingo scene and how he's trying to win over the seniors at the nursing home was good too. He comes off sleazy, but at the same time likeable and fun to watch.

I really like Rhea Seehorn as Kim. Such a different role for her from seeing her on Whitney. Yes, I'm one of the three people that watched that.

Good episode tonight.

Oh, wow...didn't realize that was her on Whitney...now we just need to find that third person.

I know her best as Swatello.

After last week's masterful episode, there was no way this one wasn't going to be a bit of a let down. However, I did like that we started seeing the origins of Mike as Jimmy's guy.

I wouldn't call this week's episode a letdown compared with last week's. This was more in tone with most of the episodes of the series thus far whereas last week was focused on Mike's origins and felt more like something out of Breaking Bad and almost separate from Better Call Saul.

Re: Better Call Saul (S1E07) -- "Bingo" -- 3/16/15

Agreed. It wasn't a let-down, but rather a come-down from last week's amazing change of pace episode.

I'm still really enjoying this series. Odenkirk is doing great job here. Makes you care deeply for a guy you really shouldn't. Loved the scenes with the Kettlemans - very funny stuff. And Mike's first fixer job was well shot and paced beautifully.

Still I have a huge problem with the Chuck stuff. It feels like it's supposed to be the emotional crux of the show and yet I don't give a damn about a recluse with a psychosomatic disorder. It kills me since I've been a fan of Michael McKean for 35 years (since Used Cars at least, maybe since Laverne & Shirley). He's totally wasted here -- unconvincing, unfunny, judgmental and annoying, and in addition looks and sounds nothing like Jimmy. They're the least convincing pair of actors cast as brothers since Cruise and Hoffman strolled into a casino together in matching suits. Maybe there's a payoff down the road that will make all the wasted time on this storyline seem worthwhile, but as of now, I feel like it just kills all the momentum of the show for the few minutes the weekly scene takes.

I,don't think he really wanted the office for himself. He was trying to acquire Kim. He saved the best spot for her. Once he realized his chance at her was over he freaked out. I saw it more about losing the girl he liked than actually being the office itself.

^ That's how I interpreted it as well. He had his spat at the end in the corner office, so I associated it with the loss of Kim and 'what could have been'. Either way, it was well done.

As was Mike's heist of the Kettleman's stash. As mentioned already, well paced and shot beautifully. Liked the musical number they chose as well.

I think that was part of it but I do think he wanted it for himself too somewhat. I'm sure he wants to get out of the makeshift boiler room office he has at the nail salon and also wants to try and build himself up somewhat so he can prove himself to Chuck. I agree though that he wanted to try and get Kim on his side because he likes her and probably thinks that she would give him some credibility and could help him elevate his business.

I liked the fleeting moment at the diner where the waitress offered them coffee. Saul and Mrs. Ketterman both waived her off and Mr. Ketterman motioned for some, but didn't get any. That guy is so henpecked and meek.

Seems to me that he could have taken their retainer, went to trial and lost, and Saul certainly would have. Instead what he did was give up his dream to save her position at the firm. Had he not, she would likely have gone into business with him since partner was now so unlikely. Of course the irony in that doing that good deed he set himself up to become the "criminal" lawyer he would become is just incredible writing.

In reality, Jimmy did the best thing. He protects himself and keeps his relationship with Kim. I don't think he was upset about the office at all. It was way larger than he really needed. It seemed pretty clear that he was using it to impress Kim and try to get her to join him. I have to believe that he was upset that she won't be joining him anytime soon if at all.

I was wondering WTH the money on the toy truck was all about, and then as soon as Mike went into the house, I LOL'd as I realized what he was going to do.

It pains me that we've only got 3 episodes left this season. Good thing Mad Men and GOT are coming up.

Bullshit. I thought this episode surpassed last in terms of "the feels" for the character. At the end there with Jimmy in the potential office space. Hell, from the moment he went into the kettlemen's with the plan and told them to check their hiding place it was as good, if not better than the I broke him speech. Such emotion all around in the realization on all parties.

Conscience gets expensive, doesn't it?

I will say it seems incredibly unlikely that someone two years away from being made partner at a good firm would be forced into a smaller office and shunned by her boss because two nutballs wouldn't take a plea deal. It's not like she cost them one of their long-term major corporate clients. Still, I really like the dynamics between her & Jimmy.

I agree. This was sort of problematic to me. The fact that she negotiated a great deal should be enough to impress them. The client was completely irrational and I wouldn't think that a law firm would hold that against her.

I will say that I don't think the writing is as solid as Breaking Bad, but the show is every bit as entertaining.

One thing I've always said when talking about breaking bad is the show isn't realistic at all. None of it ever was, the characters and scenarios were what made it so great (along with style, cinematography etc).

Great stuff so far. Really enjoyed the kettlemans story "Maude and Ned Flanders" I'm already cringing thinking about the inevitable bad stuff coming between Jimmy and Chuck and Amy.

The writers are still finding their way with the characters, but man, this show is just fantastic in every way.

Absolute top notch!

I took the whole money choice and consequences as an echo from Breaking Bad and Walter's efforts to keep Badger free ... it is expensive to have a conscience.

Am I the only one that was intently looking at the Wanted wall above Jimmy and Mike, looking for familiar faces? I thought I saw the hitman brothers (or was it cousins?) that came after Hank in BB. I also thought that Jimmy bumped into one of the guys on the wall when he was on the phone in the diner bathroom.

I thought that I saw a younger looking Jesse on the top left of that wall.
