Re: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (FX) -- Series Thread -- 2/2/16

Just watched it with my daughter (who has become a fan of true crime series and has watched Fargo, The Jinx and Making a Murderer with me in the past year). It's cool seeing how close to the real thing some of these actors and locations are. Paulson and Vance especially were great. I'm in.
And how about FX maybe having the best line up on TV? Who saw that coming a few years ago?

The opening was really creepy though the acting by the detectives was really bad.

Maybe they should have cast Terry Crews as O.J. lol?

OJ banged his girlfriend in Kim Kardashian's bedroom with all the Joey Lawrence posters on the wall?

I watched it last night and I like it. I liked the song at the end. I think the weak cast members are going to David Schwimmer, Travolta, and Connie Britton. I'm a Connie Britton fan, but she is wrong the Faye Resnick role.

I guess I'm the lone dissenter, here. I thought it was terrible.

I couldn't buy any of the characters. It felt like a cast of caricatures. Travolta looked ridiculous. Cuba just didn't work.

I'm surprised at the praise I'm reading.

I wouldn't take the show as a documentary.

In an upcoming episode Kris will Kim her first video camera.

I'm hoping Robert drags a reluctant Chloe to her first Lakers game -- "You know, some day you might end up liking basketball".

Cuba Gooding Jr was pretty awful as OJ. His voice is about an octave higher, and he doesn't have OJ's physical presence.

Otherwise, I really liked this. They started off showing the 90s LA riots, then went into a campy tone. It was a good representation of the whole OJ trial...a media circus, with an incompetent prosecution team, Johnnie Cochran's antics, and nutty Kato Kaelin. It was more about a referendum on racial tensions and late night talk show jokes...the fact that 2 people had been brutally murdered seemed like an afterthought. Crazy stuff.

Courtney B Vance was definitely the highlight. Some actors just have that abililty to chew up the screen without going off the rails. Can't wait to see him in the courtroom scenes.

Coming up: White Ford Bronco chase!

Courtney B. Vance was in high demand in the mid 90's but lately except for the O.J. series he has been mostly M.I.A.

Get rid of the shitty cable co DVR and get a Tivo.

I think this will put her in a very positive light and hopefully let her have some closure. Paulson is terrific in this as is Vance as Cochran. Cochran is already feeling like a superstar.

Travolta not so much.. Cuba, is ok.

Great start, even though I watched a ton of this trial during the time, it's interesting to see the inside the "behind the scenes".

IMO FX has always had the best line up. Shield, Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, Justified, Americans, etc etc.

Anyway, watched this last night, and hooked as well. Solid start. I was in HS when this went down, so still familiar, with the show providing some "oh yeah" moments.

I was in a strip club for a friend's bachelor party and no one was watching the strippers - they were all watching the TVs and cheering on OJ. Talk about surreal!

I've been saying that for years. They are the best basic cable station and are the most consistent with putting out quality shows. Just because someone like AMC had 3 big shows, they don't hold a candle to FX, IMO.

Breaking Bad and Mad Men were far better than all the FX shows collectively.

The Shield is vastly superior to Breaking Bad and Mad Men. And I'm a fan of all of those. Plus, even though I haven't seen all the FX shows, at least they diversify with comedy. AMC has yet to do that.

Yup, FX is the best basic cable channel. But overall...

HBO, FX, AMC

Tip of the cap to NBC for some of their comedies (The Office, Scrubs, Freaks & Geeks, Community)

From the beginning I thought the idea of this would be a stupid show. I am watching because of the talent involved. I am thoroughly impressed. The only misstep here is Gooding Jr. He is horribly miscast. Outside of that, everyone else is great.

Re: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (FX) -- Series Thread -- 2/2/16

The Shield for me never dips in quality, and increases the tension as it goes. Near perfect series finale. Seasons One to three are more of a buildup, but you can't deny the roller coaster of 5 to the end. Or 4 with Rawling. People think it's 100% action cop shit when there's a lot of suspense, drama, relationships, and several different things happening at once.

And despite loving BB, I can equally when people say it's the best show of all time.

Mad Men - great show. It's somewhere in my top ten, and I've revisited episodes from it and BB several times.

In "real life" I would recommend any one of these shows obviously. Maybe my "vastly superior" claim is overselling it, but for me it's certainly the best of the three, no contest.

We all just kept watching because I guess we felt like we had to.

I'll still take The Sopranos and Breaking Bad over just about anything. Granted, I loved Six Feet Under, too.

I had a similarly bizarre experience. I was walking out of a restaurant, I'd eaten dinner with my brother, and a limo driver sticks his head out of the window of his own limo. He's sitting in the back seat. He says, "Get in here! They found OJ and now he's on the run." So we get in and watch the chase on a TV inside a limo with the limo driver. Very weird moment.
