Gut feeling is that this goes down a bit differently in the books. Them wandering out the back door of the cave while being attacked by the Night's King himself and his buddies and a mess of undead seems unlikely with Martin - they'd be caught like a minute later unless there's a huge Deus Ex Machina to come save them. Showrunners are a bit sloppier with this kind of thing (kinda like Littlefinger teleporting around which Martin would never do).
Martin normally ties his story knots a bit tighter / less ridiculously than the TV show does. One of the reasons it takes him so fucking long to write them, I'm sure.

I don't get that. If he's uploading as much info as possible, I'd expect it to look like the end of 2001 with all these lights flying towards him. Instead we see Bran warging into the past so he can hang out in Winterfell and watch the kids learn to sword fight. If he's simultaneously getting a Spock-like memory dump, it wasn't at all apparent to me.
And while Hodor's sacrifice was very touching emotionally,it bought them what, a 30 seconds head start? For the sake of story, they get away, but based on what we just saw, that seems like a stretch.

Some info from the show indicating that a certain character will be returning soon (SPOILERS!)

It certainly didn't seem like it would make much difference. We'll have to see in the next episode if they can (1) make Hodor's effort not be a waste and (2) make any escape believable.

Something that just struck me. Does Willis/Hodor know from that very moment how and when he's going to die? Well maybe not when but does he know that when he goes north of the wall that his time is coming to an end? If so that makes his death all the more touching to me. He's known that from the time that Bran is born that he will die protecting him.

That also explains why he was very freaked out when Bran warded into him a few seasons ago (aside from that being a weird experience in the first place).

One thing that confused me a little... Did Bran warg into Hodor while he was still awake watching the past? That seemed odd to me, that he's watching Hodor become Hodor while he's controlling his body. Of course it was ultimately so he could be in both places when he's yelling Hold the Door.

It wasn't uneventful, it saved Bran's life. It's the whole causal loop again.

Watched this episode in an airport and it was pretty tough trying to not cry during the end sequence. Loved it, and love the weird time/logic thing like that.

All this confusion over the timing of the vision, why that particular vision, etc. just goes to show how poorly the writers have explained what the hell Bran is doing when he has a vision and what the rules are. This is what the Three Eyed Raven should have explained, so the audience would understand what is meant to happen and why.

I mean, I have my own opinion of it, but it's what I picked up from the writing. When Meera tells Hodor to "Hold The Door" repeatedly, she is actually reaching Bran in the vision because he is the one controlling Present day Hodor. Similar to how she reached him earlier to Warg into present day Hodor in the first place. Except now that those 3 are all connected, Wylis is fucked up hearing Meera scream "Hold The Door" because he's now apart of a Bran-Hodor Ménage à trois.

But that isn't the whole point. Hodor needed to be where he was at, it was already predestined to happen. I'm pretty sure Bran is going to escape somehow and IMO it will partly be because of Hodor's Sacrifice. Also I believe this event needed to go down to show Bran what kind of power he possesses and it's the event that leads him down the path to become the three-eyed Raven.
Now I'm going to say some spoilers about what I think happens next episode, but I don't know for sure. If you want to read you can....

A couple of quick predictions....
We have not seen the last of Hodor. Think zombie Hodor...
Ben Stark will return. Perhaps as a rogue good zombie, (playing the part of book Cat?). Maybe that's how Meera and Bran get out of the great white north...
Unbelievable episode. So much to think about. Easily in my top 3 episodes of all time...

Then everyone would be complaining why a character is babying the audience with exposition. There is always some complaining about scenes like this. Also, this type of sci-fi being introduced always causes intense debate. Back to the Future, 12 Monkeys, Inception. I don't think any of this makes it a sloppy job from the writers, they have very intense discussion about all of this stuff. Furthermore, I'm assuming on this one, but we're probably going to get more and more info about Warging and Bran and the extent of his powers and how they work in the future.
Maybe the showrunners will explain it all later and this will make total sense, but right now it feels sloppy.
