Westworld (S1E02) -- "Chestnut" -- 10/9/16 (Spoilers!!)
image hoster
A pair of guests, first-timer William (Jimmi Simpson) and repeat visitor Logan (Ben Barnes), arrive at Westworld with different expectations and agendas. Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Quality Assurance head Theresa Cullen (Sidse Babett Knudsen) debate whether a recent host anomaly is contagious. Meanwhile, behavior engineer Elsie Hughes (Shannon Woodward) tweaks the emotions of Maeve (Thandie Newton), a madam in Sweetwater's brothel, in order to avoid a recall. Cocky programmer Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman) pitches his latest narrative to the team, but Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) has other ideas. The Man in Black (Ed Harris) conscripts a condemned man, Lawrence (Clifton Collins, Jr.), to help him uncover Westworld's deepest secrets.

Episode 2 of 10
Please Note: Episode 2 was released early via HBO On Demand, HBO Now and HBO Go. Posting this thread early for those of you who choose to watch it before Sunday's telecast.
This is to avoid people posting potential episode 2 spoilers in the episode 1 thread.
If you choose to click on this thread and have not watched the episode via those platforms, you are at risk of seeing spoilers. You have been warned. Sunday will probably be a slow night in the TV forum because of football and the Presidential debate.

I almost want to save this to binge it. This series seems perfect for a weekend binge where everything is fresh on your mind as you go ep to ep.

good 2nd ep.. put to rest my fear that the show would just make it a story of the week as far as who ever just popped into Westworld on the train.
Oh and being Ed Harris' gun got a lot of up close screen time this ep.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeMat_Revolver
It's a modern reproduction version of the LeMat revolver. Being the early ones were all ball/cap and Ed's is clearly center fire. I guess the old ones use to weight in at 5 pound when fully loaded?! No wonder it fell out of favor, even with 9 shots + shotgun round.
Run around with 5 pounds of iron you have to try to draw, point and then shoot?

Another good episode, interesting to see other characters having memories and freaking out. Really curious to see what Anthony Hopkin's character has planned.
Poor James Marsden, they should just have him die every episode

This is my new shit right here. It's so fucking layered beyond belief.
Me and some friends made mentioned of that gun. Like how many bullets does that thing have? And a shotgun shell? Fuck!
I love Thandie Newton, BTW, she may very well get an Emmy for her role. The scene with Ed Harris and Clifton Collins at the table with his gun, and the wife and daughter was fucked up.
This is almost like a cousin to A.I. and Ex Machina. Lots of fucked up shit happening and so far it seems that the robots are the ones getting fucked. I would not be surprised if it switches sides by season's end.

I really liked it as well. Very intense and violent, even though it's just "robots" who are the victim of violence so far.
Don't know where it's going but looking forward to the ride.

I agree, this episode was better than the first.

Good ep. I feel as though the opening to this one should have been the opening to the series premiere. They could have shown the vacationers and then cut to Marsden's character (it would be amusing if he becomes this series' equivalent to Kenny)to keep the twist in tact.
I really do think Hopkins as the man in charge is effective. He is basically playing Walt Disney with a bit of Hannibal Lecter thrown into the mix. He's all about the guests, but he really wants to know what makes people tick. I also like the arc they are developing with the Man in Black. He's obviously an obsessed gamer , and I am curious about the whole "next level" aspect of the maze. However, if he had truly been doing this for over 30 years, then how could he have not known about the little Mexican town?

With the shot of the cross at the end, I'm guessing he's adding some kind of religious experience to the park. Or maybe that's just an allusion to him playing god with the robots/AI.

As the camera pans up the tower with cross at the it looks just like an oil rig. I wonder if the tower gave him the idea instead of the cross. His idea may be to introduce a gold rush storyline.

There's obviously some kind of Wi-Fi network set up so the techs can send instant commands to the robots from control center.
How was Hopkins able to give mental commands to the robot snake? Is he plugged into the network? Or are snakes just programmed to follow anybody's finger.
Will a robot obey any voice command from a human? Even a guest? Are they programmed to respond only to voice commands from the techs?
Hopkins commanded the robot boy to go home. Techs can do this from the command center with the Wi-Fi, he did it with his voice.
Does a robot have to be commanded by voice into a particular "mode" before accepting voice commands/programming?
If Hopkins did turn out to be a robot, can he control the other robots by thought?

Re: Westworld (S1E02) -- "Chestnut" -- 10/9/16 (Spoilers!!)
This is a great show so far, but I have an issue with the fact that guests are basically unstoppable. The entire thing basically seems like a real-life MMORPG, but it's weird that the robots can't even stun the guests when they shoot them. Although the fact that they are this unstoppable force does also make it interesting. Maybe they'll have a Westworld 2.0 where they change the mechanics up a bit.

Interesting that the hosts can get infections. I would think that they would have made them out of inorganic material to avoid all of those biological issues.
I wonder who that was who was speaking to Dolores. I assume the gun he led her to is real. And she now has the power to hurt/kill a guest.

I don't play computer games, but it seems to me being invincible would get boring quickly. People pay big bucks to go to Westworld. Who wants boring? Mistakes need to have consequences for maximum enjoyment. It should at least feel like paintball, or a mild electric shock or something. Heck, even the equivalent of a force-feedback racing wheel would be reasonable. And that's without giving it much thought. I'm sure they could come up with better.

Solid 2nd episode. I like how there are more layers to the characters of Westworld than just being stationary robots. I liked seeing the memories of Maeve. Seeing new guests experiencing the park for the 1st time was cool (William and Logan)
Poor James Marsden. Is Teddy going to be the Kenny of Westworld?
So Ed Harris (the man in black) from what I understand was a guest of the park, chose to stay, but got really bored with the same old shit over and over, so now he's decided to wreak havoc on the park. I'm curious do Bernard and Dr. Ford not know what's going on and the shit he's doing?
In a way this show is almost like a darker version of Fantasy Island with a little AI/Science Fiction thrown in.

“It’s not the guns,” Nolan said. “It’s the bullets. We thought a lot about this. In the original film, the guns won’t operate guest on guest, but we felt like the guests would want to have a more visceral experience here. So when they’re shot it has sort of the impact. They’re called simunitions. The U.S. military trains with rounds like the ones we’re talking about. But there’s a bit of an impact, a bit of a sting. So it’s not entirely consequence-free for the guests.”

Speaking of video games, apparently GTA, Red Dead Redemption, and Bioshock were used as research for the show.

Among the video game inspirations for Westworld were Rockstar’s open-world adventure games — most notably, Red Dead Redemption and the Grand Theft Auto series, which both Nolans played for research.
“My wife is the world’s most boring Grand Theft Auto player,” Jonathan Nolan said.
“The city looks beautiful if you just slow it down and take your time,” Lisa Joy Nolan rebutted. This attitude of enjoying an open-world video game — treating it as a theme park, essentially — is addressed in the show’s second episode, which airs tonight on HBO (it’s already available on demand). In the episode, “Chestnut,” we’re introduced to two new human visitors.
Logan treats the park like “a Grand Theft Auto mission of indulgence,” said actor Ben Barnes during the panel. His friend William (Jimmi Simpson) is more reluctant to see the park as a fantasy. To follow the metaphor, he is the Grand Theft Auto player who stops at traffic lights.
But the Nolans are fascinated by the way that people can use games to explore violent fantasies that might be completely at odds with their everyday personalities. This behavior finds its logical extreme in the Man in Black (Ed Harris). “It really speaks to the game-like aspect of it,” said Jonathan Nolan.
“The way that we act in our simulations is not [...] how we act in the real world,” Jonathan Nolan said of Harris’ character. “That binary aspect of his personality is something we’re exploring.”
