I’m sure I’ll check out the new series when it comes out but I think if they wanted to sell all of us on these spin-offs they probably shouldn’t have shit the bed at the end of GoT.
I’m mildly curious but I’m not going to be fooled twice.

This looks like it could be an enjoyable watch, and will help erase the memory of how the last 2-3 seasons of Game Of Thrones just devolved into a hot mess.

I've never been a person who felt years of great television are totally negated by an ending that I didn't like. It may keep the show from being on "Mt Rushmore", but it still exists as mostly great television and a remarkable achievement in the medium.

I wouldn't call it revisionist. Game of Thrones had lots of issues even back to season 5, and I felt it was on a decline ever since then. A lot of stuff got glossed over because we expected the ending to deliver. The last season was absolute trash, and the rushed ending with a tons of ideas never paid off or addressed absolutely killed the legacy of that show.

Man people are into revisionist history here. Yes the final season or two were pretty disappointing, too rushed. But it's not like they were terrible or negated everything that came before it. To dismiss D&D like they were the problem with GoT is idiotic. The show wouldn't have happened without them and for the most part the series was truly outstanding.

There's an obvious pattern among people who didn't think the show's last few seasons were that bad: they didn't read the books.
As soon as D&D starting running low on book material, there was a noticeable drop in quality. And this didn't happen in the final season or two, it happened about halfway through the series

But, on the other hand, there's a noticeable change in the novels after the third book, A Storm of Swords, as well, when Martin decided that he didn't want to do a planned time jump after that book, and took a different track (and added a seventh book to the planned six-book cycle). The last two published books seem to do a lot of wheel-spinning.

As someone who didn't read the books (because I decided to wait until GRRM finished them all first ), I think it says a lot about the decline in quality of the source novels that the 3rd book took 2 seasons (3rd & 4th) to cover but the 4th and 5th books were mostly covered in just 1 season (5th). That fact alone is pretty damning of the amount of filler that must have been in those later 2 books.

The thing about Martin, though, was that he had planned to have a five year time jump between the third and fourth books (A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons), which would give the dragons more time to grow and the surviving kids from the first three books to mature. (In the books, Jon, Dani, and Robb were about fourteen years old; the tv series aged them up a bit.)
Martin then got the bright idea to abandon the time-jump (his reasoning was that too many things would have happened in the interim between the books, and he needed to cover them) and it really messed up his rhythm. The first three books came out in 1996, 1998, and 2000. A Feast for Crows in 2005, and A Dance with Dragons in 2011; and keep in mind that those two books were originally supposed to be a single novel called A Dance with Dragons, but it got so long he had to split it in two. And even then, he ended up removing some chapters from ADWD to include in the sixth book.
I can't help but get the feeling that he either let the story spiral out of his control, or that he's financially secure, seventy years old, and doesn't have a lot of interest in finishing the saga at this point in his life. If that's the case, then I just wish he'd bring in a co-writer or ghostwriter. He's starting sound like Harlan Ellison promising that The Last Dangerous Visions was almost finished and would be delivered to the publisher any day now.

Yeah, I've almost given up seeing the rest of the series published at this point.
