If I have a choice, I always go with the book first. I read Shogun about 20 years ago, and admittedly my memory is kind of fuzzy about it, but I remember liking it quite a bit. I'm definitely in for watching this.

I’ve had the hardest time tracking down a book of this lately. It seems the previous versions were discontinued in preparation for a new edition of the book to coincide with the FX series (I presume). Now the new edition is available but it’s split into two books?

It looks like that’s the case. But alongside that, they also released a hardcover complete version which is more expensive than both paperbacks.

I can understand the miniseries going out of print in preparation for this, or streaming/physical editions of Stop Making Sense being removed for the re-release as another example. And updating a book’s cover to promote a new adaptation has been going on forever. But removing all existing editions of a book that’s been in print since the 70s is a new one to me.

I've seen a lot of really positive feedback about the 1st 2 episodes.

Looks like people are scooping up the old 1980 miniseries on BD. It was $42 a week or so ago on Amazon, now it's sold out.

Damn, I didn't even know the original was released on Blu-ray. Now I want to try to find one for a non-crazy price.

FYI, if you're recording this off FX instead of watching it on Hulu, it's slated to run from 10pm ET to 1am ET on the 27th.

Not sure if it will drop on TV 1st before Hulu.

So I don't expect anyone to watch it and run to this board after 1am ET to talk about it night 1.

I read these are supposed to be up at 12:01am EST on Hulu on the day they are scheduled to air on FX so the premier should be up at tonight after midnight Eastern.

Yeah it’s now up on Hulu. 2 episodes. 70 and 59 minutes.

I noticed there is also an English dub if you don’t like reading subtitles. There are also two podcasts for each episode.

What an amazing first 2 eps. Breathtaking, sweeping. It’s really like as if it were shot for theatrical release. Simply stunning scenery and simple enough story for anyone to follow. Just great stuff thus far. FX is certainly bold to air a mostly foreign language series. They can’t show the bare breats from first ep, can they?

Either way, this has epic written all over it.
