Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman

Finished this last night. Brilliant and brutal. I have never read the comics, so I had no real preconceptions and am glad I didn't. This series proves that as long as you have a gripping story and good voice actors, the animation quality doesn't have to be perfect. However, like many here I don't know if I can wait until next season to see where this is going. Any tips on where to start the collections if I want to get a point that resembles the end of season 1?

I knew next to nothing about this going into it other than that it was pretty dark. Wow, it was even more so than I expected--especially that last episode. That subway scene was insane.

It was good and I'm glad to hear it's been renewed. I like the little bits of humor, like some of the supers' names (Atom Eve, Dupli-Kate, etc.) I like the Mauler twins and the fact that they purposely never know which is the original and which is the clone.

I don't quite 'get' what the Viltrumites' agenda is. It sounded like they want to rule Earth, but it would still be populated by humans? What's the point--especially if they view humans as so insignificant and weak? Or are they planning on wiping out humans and repopulating Earth with more of their own species? I guess we'll learn more about that next season, but Omni-Man's explanations to Mark about his actions didn't really make much sense.

If the series follows as in the comic book, you’ll get an explanation that makes more sense

I would say just start at the beginning. I didn’t finish the series (got through like 4 hardcovers), but it’s a fast enough read, and some season 1 things happen in a different order than in the comics.

just burned through this... loved it! Didn't know what to expect, and 90% into the first episode I was like, yeah, ok this is "fine", then BAM.

what a voice cast!

bring on S2!

This strategy from six months ago worked out for me, as I’m 40 issues into my reread, and I figured I could start watching the series.

I think it’s great, with a strong voice cast and faithfulness to the original material (with changes here and there), including not shying away from the graphic violence. Not that I’d mind a bit less splattering brains and disconnected eyeballs. The animation is pretty basic, but I think it works for the material.

I was such a fan of the comics that I bought them in both trade and deluxe hardcover for a while before switching to digital.

Jeez.
seems like everything that we thought we’d get this year is being delayed to late this year or next year.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman

I dunno why but I couldn't get past the first episode of the show. It was well done but didn't connect with me. Even the big final scene of the first episode failed to hook me.
Spoiler:
Maybe because all the characters in that scene were undeveloped, their deaths (regardless of how brutal) meant nothing to me. Even Omniman's heel turn did little for me since he wasn't really the focus of the first episode. I just had a "okay, so he's bad" reaction.
. That being said, most people I know love this show. So I've been thinking about giving it another shot.

That moment occurred in like issue 12 in the comics so that the other characters were a bit more developed and it was the end of a story arch. They did it that way on the show to try to hook viewers though.

Yeah, I read about that after watching the first episode. I would have preferred the comic book route. It actually left me disinterested the way they did it in the show.

First 4 episodes premiere Nov 3rd and back half premieres early 2024. That is annoying

This was worth a watch. It's basically her origin story and explains how she got powers.

Decent episode that sets up the season but nothing like the 1st episode of S1.

I wonder if people will get fed up with the multiverse stuff.

Pretty entertaining beginning to the season. It's easier enjoying this show since I am only barely familiar with the major arcs in the comic run.

Reginald Vel Johnson playing Principal Winslow at Reginald Vel Johnson HS!! 😂😂

And, I loved they did the same beginning as S1 when they are about to say Invincible, but it suddenly goes to title card. They did it towards the end, but it wasn’t the same.

They are wasting a ton of screen time on the useless emotional fall-out from Mark's mom. We get it, you married a psychopath. That's what happens when you cast a big name like Sandra Oh in the role and they need to give her character something to do.

I also would have gone with Leonard Cohen's original version of Avalanche in place of Nick Cave's cover.

I did wonder why they were spending so much time on it. A little is fine, however, it feels like have already done this a few times already. Not saying someone would not be going through a lot. From a storytelling perspective, we don't need to see it several times.

Why are only 4 eps playing now and another 4 not until next year? Was bc of the writer’s strike?
