Re: SurrealEstate (SYFY) - premieres 7/16/21

I forgot to bump this as the second season is nearly over by this point. Not sure what happened here but the quality took a major nosedive with some incredibly questionable changes from what worked well in season one. They apparently retooled the series during the long layoff and must not have had access to their female lead for a lot of the filming, Susan disappears for several episodes. The main guy mostly loses his ability to talk to ghosts, which drives his story all season. They also dumped his love interest.

Major budget cuts? Whatever the plan was, it didn't work out in season two. By the end of season two they've basically reset back to the status quo of season one with a few random cast tweaks which don't add much. Whatever momentum season one had is gone.

While I am not as down on the show as Phantom, I had been meaning to comment. I definitely missed Susan when she disappeared for multiple eps, as it threw the show off-balance. At first, I liked that she was drawn to the haunted smart home home, but the show went in a dark direction when for a moment I thought it might not go down that road. I get that it was for budgetary reasons to have a key cast member not show up for a few eps meaning she was not paid, but still, although to be fair the new cast member that was added to the team was solid (she was fine in her role, but you could not help but realize that Susan was missing from the team). I straight up liked that the show ended on a nice note and I am aware that I was lucky to get a second season of this show and will not get a third.

I still feel that both seasons are worth watching and I still consider it one of my pleasant surprise faves of the past several years. I really liked the cast and the chemistry they had with each other. Even the new characters towards the end seemed to fit in just fine with the core cast.

I will take what we got, which was indeed a reset to the status quo but it sure beats a straight up cliffhanger ending that never gets resolved.

Thanks for the bumps! I didn't realize this is on Hulu. I'll keep my expectations in check for Season 2, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Doh, for a show that I love I am always late to the party in realizing it has been renewed. I am just now listening to one of those GQ youtubes where an actor talks about his roles over the years, and Eugene Levy (this youtube post is from 8 days back) is all I am so proud of my daughter who is filming season 3 of this great show called Surrealestate, and I was like wait, what??? I just googled, and yup...renewed for Season 3. Yay!

I have no clue when it will air, or if we will yet again see even more cast turnover, but I genuinely feel that his show is one of those true pleasant surprise tv shows I ended up really enjoying to have come out in the past few years so I will enjoy what Syfy and show-runners can give me.

It's a cute show with a premise well-suited for episodic television. I hope its quality rebounds after a mostly uneven second season. The producers made a terrible creative decision basically writing off the lead character's romantic interests. I'm assuming that was driven by either the actress' schedule and/or contract demands.
