Re: Bob Odenkirk hospitalized

I'm glad he's on the road to recovery. But, even though it's a mild heart attack, that's still serious.

I don't see him working for awhile.

Re: Bob Odenkirk hospitalized

Now that we know he’s doing better, maybe he’ll get a hospital visit from Titanica.

Wow I don't know the ins and outs but maybe those pre-contract physicals need to be a little more in depth (Gandolfini popped into my head).

I don't know. Maybe Decker could shed some light. Would a doctor be able to detect some kind of blockage for an otherwise seemingly healthy 58 year old who trained really hard for a action movie?

I assume they wouldn't know unless they did an EKG. or if he specifically saw a cardiologist. If Odenkirk didn't have any issues otherwise, he probably wouldn't have known.

Re: Bob Odenkirk hospitalized

I am a pediatrician and have no personal professional experience with coronary artery disease. Doesn't happen to kids, fortunately. I do have some recent personal experience though :
My NP's husband (53 years old, in fabulous shape) didn't feel good very recently. He's a veteran. Went to the VA. They did an extensive work up including EKG and labs. He got a clean bill of health. Then less than a month later he had a massive heart attack. He lives less than a half mile from the hospital, so when he had chest pain, his wife threw him in the car and rushed to the Ed. He coded within 30 seconds of arriving. They shocked him, brought him back, rushed him to the cath lab and opened up four coronary arteries, one of which was totally occluded. He's recovering now but very easily tired. He hates cardiac rehab but he's making the best of it.

My take away is that even with a recent total physical with ECG and labs, you can't tell an MI is coming. Maybe a stress test with scintigraphy might show this sort of thing. But short of that, you could miss an impending MI. And I doubt many actors in good health in their fifties would consent to such an extensive study.

I'm not a doctor but I just went through this. Let me preface this by saying many people were surprised since I looked healthy, not overweight or drinks or smokes. I was having breathing problems, especially when trying to sleep. Then my left ankle started to swell, followed by my left foot. Wasn't getting better after a couple days, so went to a doctor. A heart echo was done later and it looked like there was valve leakage. Went in for a cardiac cath, where the cardiologist said I was 99% blocked.

They wanted to prevent an attack so I was taken to a hospital for bypass surgery (My VA hospital doesn't do heart surgery). My surgeon said he was concerned about my valve leakage enough to discuss the type of replacement valves I wanted. He said once the procedure started he would go through my throat for another echo to get a better look at my valves. Woke up in the ICU with a nice big patch on my chest but I was alive. They did a quadruple bypass but my valves were better than suspected, so they were left alone. A recent heart echo confirmed they are okay.

Went through cardiac rehab for 3 months. I really liked it. They gave out info I wished I knew years ago.

They give info on diet and exercise to lessen the chances for a repeat visit to the hospital. There was also info on what can cause heart failure and how it affects your body. Also the importance of mental health in assisting with physical health. I wish I knew a lot of this stuff decades ago.

I shouldn't still be alive. I was lucky enough to have my operation before having an actual heart attack.

Re: Bob Odenkirk hospitalized

Seehorn and Odenkirk interacted with an easygoing, lived-in affection — one that they’ve been building for years, onscreen and off, but that deepened last summer, when Odenkirk collapsed on set in front of her and Fabian. It was a heart attack, and as he lay there without a pulse, it was their screams that alerted a medic.

“I’d known since 2018 that I had this plaque buildup in my heart,” Odenkirk said. “I went to two heart doctors at Cedars-Sinai, and I had dye and an M.R.I. and all that stuff, and the doctors disagreed” on treatment, with one suggesting he start immediately on medication and the other telling him it could wait. He listened to doctor No. 2 and was fine — until this year, when “one of those pieces of plaque broke up,” Odenkirk said. “We were shooting a scene, we’d been shooting all day, and luckily I didn’t go back to my trailer.” Instead, he decamped to a space where he, Seehorn and Fabian liked to retreat during downtime: “I went to play the Cubs game and ride my workout bike, and I just went down.” He added, “Rhea said I started turning bluish-gray right away.”

The soundstages “Better Call Saul” calls home are “massive,” Odenkirk said. After a few agonizingly long minutes, the show’s health safety supervisor, Rosa Estrada, and an assistant director, Angie Meyer, arrived, administering CPR and hooking him up to an automated defibrillator. It zapped him once, then once more, producing an irregular pulse that quickly disappeared. “The third time,” Odenkirk said, “it got me that rhythm back.”

An ambulance took him to Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, “and around 5 a.m. the next morning they went through right here” — Odenkirk showed me a scar on his wrist — “and blew up the little balloons and knocked out that plaque and left stents in two places.” Later that morning, Odenkirk’s wife and children arrived in Albuquerque, staying with him at the hospital as he recovered for the next week.

Odenkirk has no memory of any of this. He cobbled together his account from Seehorn and the others who helped save his life.
