American Gigolo (Showtime) - S: Jon Bernthal, Gretchen Mol - based on the film

American Gigolo, a present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film, follows Julian Kaye (Jon Bernthal) after his wrongful conviction release from 15 years in prison as he navigates his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him. While Julian struggles to reconcile the escort he was in the past and the man he is today, Detective Sunday (Rosie O'Donnell) seeks the truth about the murder that sent Julian to prison all those years ago, unearthing a much larger conspiracy along the way. Watch the premiere coming soon to SHOWTIME.

The drama also stars Lizzie Brocheré as Isabelle, the heiress to a ring of sex workers; Gabriel LaBelle as Johnny, a younger version of Julian; Leland Orser as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire; and guest star Wayne Brady as Julian's best friend and mentor, Lorenzo.

In case you weren’t aware, there was a lot of behind the scenes drama on this show. The show runner was fired 7 episodes into production for alleged abusive behavior. He’s the same guy who ran Ray Donovan and worked on the reunion movie.

They need to use Blondie's "Call Me" as their theme. One of the most under-rated movie songs of the past 50 years.

She’s been pretty much in at least a project a year for over 15 years. Hardly “MIA”.

I never saw the original American Gigolo with Richard Gere. Just not one of those movies that was ever on my radar. But, I will check this out. I like Bernthal and if it features him banging hot women every week and getting into trouble, then awesome.

I think what you’re looking for is the other Gigolos show on Showtime.

Never seen American Gigolo but if they give Bernthal another fucked up haircut then it will be good.

Someone the other day made a random Bettie Page reference, and I couldn’t remember who played her in the HBO movie until I saw this thread.

She played Bettie Page, but not in an HBO movie.

If you like Grethen Mol check out Forever Mine where she shows all of her assets though it is a terrible movie.

Re: American Gigolo (Showtime) - S: Jon Bernthal, Gretchen Mol - based on the film

I thought that was pretty classy of Paul Schrader to post that...interesting to see a little behind the scenes of how this came to be. I understand the new team not wanting Schrader's involvement. Based on the trailer it doesn't look like anything carries over from the original movie except using the Julian Kay character and the fact that he is a gigolo in LA.

I'll watch just because I love Jon Bernthal and wish he was given a good star making role. This isn't it but still fun to watch and he's sexy as hell. He does look a bit like Gere mostly in the eyes.

Why Rosie O Donnell is trying to continue with an acting career, let alone in a 'serious' role, is beyond me. Do you not have enough money lady? There are plenty of butch lesbians in Hollywood with a wedge haircut who could use the work more...maybe Lea deLaria? any one else please....

Hopefully the writers have created a storyline worthy of me wasting 8 hours on.

Yikes. I thought the trailer looked decent. I guess I'll add this to the bottom of my streaming pile then.

I didn't see any reviews. Watched it this morning because I like the leads and was bored. It's SO SLOW. And not at all sexy. First episode is all set up and backstory.

Re: American Gigolo (Showtime) - S: Jon Bernthal, Gretchen Mol - based on the film

Okay I guess I’m the only one watching this show? I’m four episodes in. It’s pretty friggin nuts. So slow, so recursive, showing the same small flashbacks again and again. Rosie O’Donnell as a one woman police investigative force. The crazy missing son subplot. And my personal favorite : Julian goes back into the business because of
Spoiler:
a stray dog that got hit by a car.

It’s really a garbage program but for some reason I like the trashy feel of it. Kind of like Red Shoes Diaries but with way less female nudity. I don’t know, Bernthal is really good. While he can’t match Gere’s charm and sexuality, he does hold his own and seems like a good guy and mysterious.
I think I’ll keep watching but my god it is so slowly paced.

Re: American Gigolo (Showtime) - S: Jon Bernthal, Gretchen Mol - based on the film

I'm watching it as well, so I guess there's two of us. It is a mess of a show but I still find it highly entertaining. The plot is nothing like I expected when I started watching. I have pretty much liked everything that Jon Bernthal has been in so maybe that's skewing my perception. I'll definitely watch it all the way through.

I've been watching it though not the last episode yet. It's decent. Not crazy about Rosie.

Finished it up. What a weird fucking show. Can’t believe I never got around to watching Andor or the Lord of the Rings show but somehow watched all of this. It’s not terrible but it sure as hell wasn’t good. Maybe Season 2 will be the show I was expecting this one to be. If there is a Season 2. They certainly tried to set it up for one.
