1899 (Netflix) - from the creators of Dark - premieres 11/17/22

From creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar of Dark comes 1899, a new mystery-thriller series that’s about to set sail. At the end of the 19th century, passengers journey from London to New York, looking forward to a new life that awaits them in the New World. When their ship comes across another one adrift at sea, all their hopes and dreams turn into an unexpected nightmare. Set out to be a multi-language series, the international cast includes Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lesser.

I love ghost ship stories. I’m totally down for this.

I thought this was going to be another Taylor Sheridan series.

Watched the first episode last night, and was totally hooked. Something is weird about it though ... I swear there are some people whose lips don't match what they say. Was this originally in multiple languages, and the non-english ones dubbed to english?

It looks like it defaults to "English - Dubbed" but there is also an "English (Original) available". Here is some more background: https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articl...-dubbing-video

There are several soundtrack options for the series. I'm listening in original English and there are people speaking in Polish, Danish, German, French, Cantonese, and possibly other languages. The subtitles provide translation for the other languages, so if you are listening in all English it is dubbed.

Really enjoying this series, binged about 5 episodes over the weekend and plan to finish it over the rest of the week. A very interesting storyline and a nice mystery unfolding so far. Looks like another win for the creators of Dark.

Finished this last night and really enjoyed it. I would be very interested in seeing where a second season went and IMDB has the cast listed as 2022- so I am sort of hoping they give this a season two. Not to spoil anything but it can wrap up and end after the last episode and it would move in a completely different direction if a second season was on offer. I really like the characters so I would for sure be on board. It's currently the number one show on Netflix so there is a decent chance they go for season two.

Well that was an interesting ending. I'm not sure I really understood it. I mean, I got what happened, but I'm still not sure why.

I'm liking this show... trying to figure out wth is going on after 5 episodes. I am not a fan of supernatural shit just happening to happen (like the bug opening doors or the boy teleporting to the cabinet). That said, I have fallen asleep - briefly - during every single episode lol. I find a lot of the middle portion of each show to be kinda boring and then we get a nice surprise at the end. Love the 70's rock songs to wrap up each episode too.

There is a reasonable and good explanation for things like the bug. It's a show with an interesting twist and a good story arc for sure.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the show and the ending, but the more I think about it, I don't know if I would say it's an interesting twist. It's kind of insulting, really.

My thoughts on the ending...
Spoiler:
The takeaway I got from the ending was that she was stuck in stasis and having trouble waking up. I think her husband IRL was already dead and his virtual self was trying to wake her up so she could start waking the crew up. The "virus" was the system being corrupted due to them being in stasis for a while and the system has been repeatedly trying to wake her up. If she hadn't woken up soon the system was going to fail imminently. Again that was what I took away from her father and other characters saying if she could not wake up she never would and all the crashed ships were previous iterations of the simulation trying to end.

That's all fine and good, but when it comes down to it, the twist isn't far removed from one of the LAMEST twists imaginable, especially after watching 7.5 hours
Spoiler:
it was all just a dream, none of this was real

I'll watch it after I'm done with "The English". Reminds me a bit of one of my slightly obscure favorites:

Re: 1899 (Netflix) - from the creators of Dark - premieres 11/17/22

Full disclosure, I still haven't finished this (thru 6 episodes and yes, I fell asleep, briefly, during ep 6 last night) but I do plan to wrap this up by end of the weekend. My wife noticed that if you take 1899 and add the 1+8, you get 9... so 999, upside down is 666. Not sure if that actually means anything or if she's reaching. But I thought it was interesting.

Wrapped up. I dug the ending. I think jpcamb's interpretation is pretty solid. We know that Maura's brother is also "awake" so if there is a season 2, I hope we learn about his motivation... and if I were to guess, Maura's family is indeed dead and her simulation allows her to at least be with them; but in a really shitty way.

Meh. I just finished this and it was alright but I would have preferred a little more Ghost Ship and a little less Shutter Island.

Even though I didn’t know exactly how the story would play out, I was able to guess the gist of it pretty quickly. It felt like the writers were trying to be a little too clever with the ending but it came off like an 8th grade creative writing assignment -

“You see, it starts out as a turn of the century ship and then we find out it’s a space ship! They’re both ships!!”

Cranked through this over the past few days, and really loved it (but then I was a huge Dark fanboy).
I look forward to another season, if there is one, though if this was the entire run I would be okay with it.

There's also a solid 50 minute 'making of' on Netflix, and some of the visual effects material was kind of eye-opening. Worth a watch AFTER you watch the series because it is spoiler-heavy.

Bummer. Figured this team proved with Dark they know how to finish a story and would be allowed to. Shame on me.

Bummer. Heard it was good. Didn't get around to it. Was planning to. But not on Netflix's timeline.

If you don’t watch Netflix content in the first few weeks and help it trend and get into their Top 10, it’s doomed.

Wasn't this the top show on Netflix for a couple weeks and in the top 10 for a few after? Seems like that should be good enough to warrant a continuation, but it's Netflix, so not really surprised. I'm only on episode 3 and not that in to it so I'll probably just remove it from my list now.

Hours watched are important but so is completion rate.
