So, 360 or PS3?
None of our family care much about gamer score but online matters, especially to my sons. So the Xbox has a more robust community and the downloadable content going for it. The PS3 offers me personally the chance to play more, and it would add a quality game to that library.
So I guess the question is will the multiplayer be that big of a deal on this game? If not, the PS3 version it will be.

How would that work? Since the PS3 isn't getting the downloadable content (which could be as robust as additional locations throughout Liberty City), I don't see how that gives you the chance to play more.
And I hope your family and the sons you mention are over 16...

Sorry for not being more clear. My point was that for a couple of reasons the PS3 is both easier and more desirable for me to play, everything else being equal. Not the least of these reasons is that my sons are 360 multiplayer hogs, so their constant playing of R6LV and COD4 limits my access to that system. Therefore I try to get multi-platform games where the online content isn't that big of a deal, such as Assassins Creed, on the PS3. I was hoping GTA would be similar.
My hopes are fading.

I bit the bullet and paid off the entire pre-order of GTA IV for PS3 today at Gamestop. I even picked up a Dual Shock 3 to go with it. I have played a lot of "sandbox" games, but have never owned or spent alot of time with a game in the Grand Theft Auto series. I hope I'm not disappointed! Midnight release here I come...

Here's a good article on things in GTA IV that might initially seem like disappointments but aren't necessarily. It's a good "expectation calibration" piece.

The small scale city doesn't bother me too much. More interactivity is a very good thing. Plus we're getting Vice City and San Andreas later on in the year anyway.

So it looks like with this new announcement if you were planning on playing the Vice City/San Andreas versions of GTA IV the 360 is the Definitive version to get, with the first expansion arriving as early as Fall this year and the next one to follow-up in 2009.
GTAIV DLC
* When MS says exclusive, they mean that no other system can have DLC content for GTAIV
* It will be bigger than a lot of people think. GTA3 Vice City and San Andreas were basically expansions of GTA3. Think of the DLC that way. We are talking major expansion for GTAIV
* No price has been discussed yet. It’s up to Rockstar on whether or not they will charge for it
* If successful, DLC may be the new way to deliver GTA expansions
I read this meaning that San Andreas and Vice City will be the exclusive content though that's not necessarily what that implies.

Hm, I don't read it that way at all. I read it that the DLC for GTA4 will be similar in "jump" when comparing Vice City/San Andreas to GTA3. Meaning the DLC will add as much to the formula of GTA4 as Vice City or San Andreas did to GTA3.
