Me too. I'm not done yet, but at the rate I'm going, I think I'll max out at around a 100 to 110 stars. Which is too bad because I kinda want to see
Spoiler:
Luigi's Galaxy
. But if it'll be even tougher than the stars I can't get, it can't be too much fun.

Question. I got the 1st purple coin star at the gate. Now I'm confused how to get the other purple coin stars in other galaxies.

Spoiler:
You have to "win" the game to unlock them.

so you can't get all 120 before beating the game? That's kind of stupid.

Seriously!

Spoiler:
For some reason I was thinking the star would pop out by the 1-up mushroom after I collected the 100 coins, so I went over there last. Needless to say, I was not thrilled when I saw the star pop up all the way back at the beginning and I had stepped on most of the green tiles already.

It kind of looks like he is give a star a kick in the butt to me instead of falling. Yeah I think there are two covers.

Thanks for this. I'm sitting here at 104 and I didn't want to go to the end until I was at 119 (assuming the 16th I'm missing is at the end).

I would have wasted a lot of time trying to find stars that didn't exist.

Spoiler:
The first time I hit 100 I was in mid-jump across one of those long gaps, the star appeared and I fell in the sludge. It wasn't until the second time that I saw where the star appeared and that I needed to keep a patch to that on the way back.. amazing. That was my 119th star, the one after that was a very easy purple coin star, so relaxing after that stress fest!

I'm at 50 stars right now the second time around. Can we stop talking about what happens after 120 stars with spoiler tags yet? So far only a couple of spots have been more difficult than the first time around, but I'm dreading going through the level you people have just been talking about again. It took me about 15 tries the first time through, and this time it will probably be almost impossible.

Is anyone going to actually try for 120 twice? I didn't think I was going to do it, but now I really can't resist. For those of you who think it's too tough to get 120 the first time around, don't. Some boards are extremely frustrating, but you will get it. I am not a "hardcore" gamer so if I can do it, I know the rest of you can. The thing that saved me on most levels is my love for the long jump.

I'm 4 stars short and can't see myself beating the following purple stars:

Luigi's purple coins
Battlestation's Purple Coins
Purple Coins on the Battlerock

I'm not very far in but this game is driving me nuts and reading what you guys say about later levels scares the shit out me. I haven't played a game like this in years and getting used to looking for "life 1-ups" and having a game end due to losing all my lives is a retro shock and proof of my crap gaming skills!!!

I never turn off my game. That way I never have to worry about having enough lives. I hate that it resets your lives. I'm up to about 60 lives on my second go around.

Usually when I turn on the game Toad gives me a letter with 5 free lives from Peach, then I go get the one in the box in the garage, the one behind the Kitchen, and the one below the Library. That starts me out with lots of lives for the harder levels.

I am up to 58 stars.

I got those five lives from Toad once. He hasn't had them since the first time he gave them to me.

Strange, I've gotten them quite frequently. I'd say about three out of fours times I'd start my game, he had a the extra lives for me. But as others have said, extra lives are pretty easy to come by without it..

So it's not every time? I didn't get them a couple times in a row so I quit checking since they are pretty easy to come by anyway. I guess I will have to go back to checking.

After a certain point in the game, he moves right over by your spawn point -- so you immediately know as soon as you log in if Peach has sent you lives.

If I had to guess I would say that he probably gets another letter every five or so stars. Since I usually grabbed ten stars in a play session, he almost always had another letter for me on my next game. When I was down to the last fifteen and was getting a couple at a time, it seemed less likely that he had a letter. That may not be exactly what triggers it, but based on what I've seen it's worth checking out.

Speaking of 1-Ups, am I correct that:
Spoiler:
There are 5 1-ups in the observatory?

1. In the box by the spaceship
2. Behind the kitchen
3. Floating over the rotating green platforms
4. Under the gateway
5. At the top of the garden spire.
