Yeah, I think it easily beats a lot of the ones released on XBLA/PSN even. The only big negative is that there's no real scoring mechanic and because it's level based, I don't feel it'll have the strong replay factor something like Geometry Wars has.. but I guess I should be saving this stuff for the review.

Re: Xbox 360: Anyone playing the Community Games?
And here's a trailer for one from a couple of Bioshock developers...
http://www.lunavu.com/Trailer_ZP01.htm
"In Zero Point you play as a technician trying to create a new source of energy on the Moon. To get the energy you'll have to guard the Chaos Void from blobs called Creeps. Careful though, Creeps will join together into more powerful creatures who can disable your equipment. The main tools in your arsenal will be the Plasma Cannon, which stuns and damages Creeps, and the Lunar Shepherd, which repels Creeps with it's headlamp.
Zero Point is an action/strategy hybrid, offering a unique new gaming experience! Try to beat your high score by using the tools at your disposal, more than 7 in all, and 4 difficulty modes to suit players of all skill levels. Zero Point can be played Single Player, or Split Screen Co-Op with a friend. You can even share one controller between two people! Great if you have a friend but only one controller, or if you want to get a little closer to someone special

I won't last 30 seconds in that game, but it does look really nice. It's got a Space Invaders Extreme vibe going on. I'll have to check out Joy Joy now.

Re: Xbox 360: Anyone playing the Community Games?
So, after playing Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril (a brand new NES game developed by one guy) and seeing the amount of resources that have popped up since I originally had this idea.. I've been considering trying my hand at NES development again.
Of course, this is an insane idea. I'd have to learn assembly, for starters, which I swore way back in 1995 I'd never do, and then have to work with all sorts of graphical limitations (which visually I enjoy, but creating around them is a pain in the balls). With all things I tend to jump into without thinking about, I tend to get WAY ahead of myself.. so I've already come to terms that I'll probably start learning and coding in 6502 assembler and give up with how painful it is. So I'm considering, once I hit this point, to move development over to XNA, but keeping (for the most part) the visual and audio charm of the NES. With MAYBE some little nudges past that (like, using the color yellow, which the NES didn't have available).
Not much else to say on it, just musing.. maybe expect something from me in this thread eventually.
Just for fun.. here's a mockup GUI I've been working on.. would be interesting to see if anyone can make anything of it.

Re: Xbox 360: Anyone playing the Community Games?
Thanks. I have not developed a video game for a VERY long time (fifteen years?) so I've created a nice road map to get myself back into it, whether I somehow become an idiot savant and "get" assembler or if I take the easy road with XNA. I've got a little single-screen card/puzzle game first for practice, then the game the above GUI is for and then either of my RPGs (one side scrolling platform game, the other a turn-based time travelling game).
The really obnoxious thing, is that someone is making an NES game that is almost EXACTLY what I was designing about three years ago (albeit not for NES). Of course, they're both rip-offs of the Monster World series, so I'm not too shocked.. maybe more amazed that someone has this thing running on an NES.

Re: Xbox 360: Anyone playing the Community Games?
I don't know. I can appreciate the authenticity of sticking with what made NES games NES games, but if XNA (or something else) is easier, it seems like that would be the way to go. I'm all about these retro or psuedo-retro games that are popping up all over the place. It would seem that it's more important to capture the "essence" of what you're going for (to sound like a tool), than locking yourself in on a certain platform.
I dabble with making hiphop beats. I'm TERRIBLE at it (terrible!), but it's fun trying to learn and create stuff. I use a Maschine groove box, with has all these nice bells and whistles thanks to advances in technology, but I'm still going after that early 90s MPC sound. I just have more tools at my disposal, is all. So it's easier to create what I want, but the end product is still the same. Essence.

Just downloaded Prismatic Solid, and it's totally worth the $1 they're charging for it.
It's actually a really good bullet-hell SHMUP.

Urban Space Squirrels came out a few weeks ago and it's a damn blast. It doesn't have the humor, but it's not much different than 'Splosion Man mixed with a decent bit of Metroid-style ability upgrades and puzzles that feel not far from Portal's logic. It's only a buck and it's well worth it. Check out the demo.
