I've been impressed with the progress they are making outside of their own hardware as well. They're launching applications for tablets so that you can use the controller on those and play anywhere you have an internet connection. Also, I've read they are taking the route Netflix did years ago (and really everybody now) and trying to get the software baked into Blu-ray players, TVs, etc. If they can get that out there and you only need to buy a controller that's even more potential customers. Smart play.
Personally I haven't tried it, but a friend has (used a promo to get the free system) and he says it's really good based on the fact you're playing on a server somewhere. Says gameplay is smooth and graphics look good.

This would be ideal for MMORPGS. No need to download massive files and updates. Old Republic for example is rumored to be a 40 gb download and that's without patches

Is anyone playing this using their TV? Does the video compare to PS3/360? Most importantly, how's the controller? Is it comfortable and responsive? Is there any lag?
I'm thinking of getting one. There's a couple pre-order offers that include the game (Saints Row 3, Deux Ex, Warhammer), system and controller for around $50.

Geezus and both my wife and I are highly curious about Old Republic too, but our Internet company will go nuts if we do that. I don't like the idea of OnLive but in this case, I might have to agree with this one.

Now truth be told, I buy a good handful of games off XBLA. Heck, I am absolutely digging Torchlight. But I would have gladly payed $20 for that same game on disc. Point in fact, I own all (I believe) of those Xbox Live compilations on disc.

That's actually what I was referring to. I still like the idea of holding the game and not worrying that one day I will wake up and not be able to play it because servers are down or perhaps I was a day late in my payment that month. A collector's mentality. Antiquated, perhaps but one I will have until the day I pass this Earth.

Also, I dearly hope when the new Xbox comes out they port all the current gen XBLA titles over. I will be pissed if they don't.

I guess I was more meaning that I can recover my gamertag to the new console, redownload all the games/DLC, transfer the DRM ownership, and actually play the games. The Xbox -> 360 transition didn't go super smoothly with the limited backwards compatibility lists. With such a push to digital distribution I think people are going to be more sensitive to the new system supporting the old digital only purchases.

I have more faith that Apple, Microsoft and Sony are still going to be around in ten years. OnLive, no so much.

Something appears to be going on over there. Onlive is refuting claims that it is closing up shop, but others are reporting it: http://gizmodo.com/5935779/did-onliv...-its-employees

That'd suck, it's very impressive technology that could potentially be big ... in a couple more years.

Wouldn't it be hilarious of MS bought it under a new company so they can compete with Sony buying Gaikai?

That was one speculation. The other was Amazon, as they are well know to create shell companies to do stuff like this. They've done it to file patents for Kindles, IIRC.

Well apparently some of the fired employees for Onlive are starting to leak stuff out. Like this in particular

IF true, then this could suck for sony, although holding off on reporting a patent violation until it is acquired by a "big fish" could seem suspect IMO. I have a feeling you can't do this.
That's also provided that the new investor has the money to fight Sony and their team of lawyers since they probably have a shitload more money.
"Steve got all excited when Gaikai got acquired, because it kind of validated everything we did," our source told us when asked if Sony's acquisition of the streaming service company changed an attitude in the office. At around the same time Sony made the acquisition, OnLive's patent for gameplay streaming went through. "So all of a sudden, Steve was like 'When the time is right, we're going to hit them with our patent because we're not going to let some two-bit company ride our coattails,'" the source claimed, explaining the threat was made to the entire company soon after Gaikai was acquired.
"I guarantee that some time in the future, Steve is going to go to court and sue the shit out of them for stealing our ideas," the source said.

OnLive is shutting down, and selling all their patents to Sony.
