Mixed it not speak and hear. Audio settings are hear only. Mixed then is through TV speakers and headset. Set it to headset only.

Yeah, headset only is the option you want. If you then unplug your headset the audio will default to your speakers.

i want to give this another whirl sometime in future, maybe with H3, and want to get the full experience, even if i get relentlessly mauled or not.

Quantum of Solace can be found pretty cheap and a lot of people still play that game. I believe it uses the same engine as modern warfare.
