The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo
I haven't heard about consoles, but I've heard that book publishers pay return shipping. Rather than do that they have the stores rip the covers off and toss the books.
Unless Nintendo has an agreement where stores eat the cost of unsold merchandise, I don't think shipped to stores really counts as sold.

I doubt Nintendo gets paid up front for those. My understanding is that the store owes a certain amount per item. Payment to be made later. Less returns of unsold items.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo
Nintendo dug their own grave making it a Mario system. I think GenX that grew up on NES still wants to have a Nintendo console in their life but for chrissake give us more games that don't feature characters from the Toadstool Kingdom.
We're two years in and we have(and will have this year):
WiiU:
NSMBU
NSLBU
Mario 3D World
Mario Kart
Mario Party
Captain Toad
Game & Wario
Mario & Sonic Olympic Games
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Mario Maker
Smash Brothers
Yoshi's Wooly World
Dr. Luigi
3DS
NSMB2
Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart
Smash Bros
Luigi's Mansion
Mario & Sonic Olympic Games
Mario & Luigi Dream Team
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Mario Party
Paper Mario
Yoshi's Island
If you own one system that's a lot of fucking Mario & Co if you own both it's friggin' obscene. That's two dozen games featuring the Mario gang. It's exhausting. Take some teams working on a fraction of those and revive some stuff we haven't seen in a few years (Starfox is a nice start), but what about F-Zero, Waverace & Eternal Darkness? How about an epic Kid Icarus game in the vein of Shadows of Mordor? Why not buy some exclusives like the other two companies and get games like Beyond Good & Evil 2 going or get a cult fave like Mirror's Edge in your corner?
Selling Rare was the worst thing they could have done. They could have kept Banjo relevant, and had many others in their stable (that MS doesn't care to use either) like Conker, RC ProAm, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini, Battletoads, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, etc. Even though it was developed under MS, but I think Viva Pinata would be killer on the gamepad.
I've said it before but none of these games on my wishlist would sell like the Mario games, but if you have a few of them on the shelf, the console looks a lot more attractive than simply a "Mario Machine."
Also $300 is absurd competing against X1 and PS4, essentially being a last gen system tech-wise.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo
However, according to a representative from Nintendo, those numbers reflect "sell-in" values, meaning that they account for the total number of units sold to retailers. Those sales are distinguished from "sell-through" values, which denote sales from retailers to consumers. For a variety of reasons, retailers could return some portion of "sell-in" stock to Nintendo before it ever reaches customers. The Nintendo representative told Polygon that the company typically uses sell-through numbers in press releases.

Well I was going off what Adam Tyner had mentioned and heard elsewhere, that Nintendo wasn't sending these on consignment so that they actually are paid for the stock they send out. Given that we see the shipped/sold difference regularly with Microsoft and Sony reports, I assume those are different?

Cool, so essentially those are shipped numbers then. Thanks for finding out the clarification

Is there any hope of getting a Animal Crossing game for the Wii U? I still play the Animal Crossing game that was released for the Wii to this day. My Wife and I sure would love to have a new version of the game.

Nothing's been announced, but the speculation is that one is in the works. The idea is that Nintendo went to a lot of trouble to create all those high-def assets for Animal Crossing Plaza, and it'd be kind of a waste to do all that for just that one app.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo
So after owning the Wii U for a month now, I ended up with:
Game and Wario
Zelda Windwaker
Lego City Undercover
NES Remix Pack
New Super Mario Bros U + Super Luigi U
Pikmin 3
Super Mario 3D World
Super Smash Bros Wii U
Wii Sports Club
Zombi U
Nintendo Land
So I think that's enough to hold me over for awhile I still want to eventually grab Mario Kart 8, DKC Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 2. But I want to play though some of these first. NSMB has been fun playing with the pro controller, and this is the first time I've played a Pikmin game, so that's been pretty fun as well. And the kids enjoy watching it too, which makes it a lot easier getting some time in to play.

I'm not sure what a WiiU version of Animal Crossing would bring to the table, though. At this point, why not just make it for the 3DS, update it to be more expansive/have a better online component, and introduce IAP and (maybe daily) Amiibo unlocks (which hooks people to the new 3ds). I mean, I'd probably hate if they did that, but I've seen enough inferior AC clones on mobile to know that they could make some money with it if they did it that way. Plus three different mobile games paid big bucks to air commercials during the SB, they must be making some dough.

For what it's worth, Animal Crossing producer Katsuya Eguchi agrees with you (and, as a rabid New Leaf fanatic, I do too) about the whole console thing:
...so any Wii U-bound Animal Crossing game wouldn't just be New Leaf on a bigger screen.
"The current gameplay style of Animal Crossing is best suited for a portable device," Eguchi said, "but if we were to create an Animal Crossing for a home console, I think we would really have to invent a new style that's suitable for the platform. The environment in which the player is playing the game is very important, so we need to think that through before we start creating something like that.

I didn't realize they were open to mobile platforms (though pokemon does have a couple of ipad apps now). If so, even better. They can make a WiiU game that's more full featured, but have your character be able to transition over to the 3DS and/or have you do things on a mobile app. One of the best things about the first animal crossing was going to the island by hooking up a GBA (mainly because of the money you could get, but still, it was cool) and that was a few generations ago for both platforms. The key, though, would be adding content regularly to make it fresh, and I just don't think that they have the online strategy to do it.

JMO, of course, I think AC is a much better game when it's played on the home consoles. I hate Animal Crossing on the portable systems. As a huge fan of the series, I just can't get into it on the hand held devices. I tried and tried but it just doesn't have the same fun factor when it's played on a DS or 3DS.

It seems Wind Waker HD might soon be on the OOP game list for the Wii U.
Both Toys "R" Us and GameStop no longer sell it.

Yeah, that's why I picked up a copy at Best Buy when I saw it. Target is the only other place I've seen it at regularly. It looks like Amazon has under 300 copies as well.

I had forgotten all about that until you just brought it up. I remember you had to buy some kind of device to hook up the GBA to the Gamecube to go to the island. I used to have a blast going to the island. Wasn't there also some kind of cards you could buy to add extra items, bells and fruits to your town as well? Seems like it but my memory is not what it used to be.
