Amiibo Tap launched for free today. Plop an Amiibo on the gamepad, and you can play up to three minutes of an old NES. It's sort of a demo system for the Virtual Console, I guess.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

1. I'm interested in playing some Virtual Console games. Is there a controller better than the Classic Controller Pro?

2. Is it true that I need a Wiimote in order to use the Classic Controller Pro? Can I use my old one? I never purchased the improved one.

If you have a WiiU, get the Pro Controller. It might be the best controller Nintendo has made.

It lasts for, like, 80 hours on one charge too, eclipsing the competition. The lack of analog triggers is a drag, and I'm not sold on the right thumbstick placement, although it does work well enough for Nintendo's games which don't rely on manipulating the camera as much. I can't think of another controller that feels so comfortable in my hands.

Well, since I'm interested in playing Super Metroid, I thought maybe getting a controller similar to the SNES would increase my enjoyment. I don't know. I'll see.

My main priority now is to get that Yoshi amiibo immediately. I don't even care about them in general, but the Yoshi ones...fuck. yes.

If I'm lagging online, that means everyone else is, right? Super Smash Bros isn't very fun online.

My connection varies. I've had some sessions with no lag, but some with considerable lag. I wish it were more stable.

Mario Maker playable at Best Buy on the week of E3. Nintendo World Championship's coming back on June 14th. No real surprise here, but there's gonna be a digital event and Treehouse Live during E3.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I turned on my Wii U for the first time in over a month to finally play some LEGO City Undercover. The humor in that game is awesome. Pretty good so far. I'm really surprised they didn't try to bring that one to other platforms.

I'll also probably swing by Best Buy to pick up Mario Kart 8 since it's finally on sale. $39.99 after GCU was my price point since that damn thing never seems to go on sale.

Lego is one of my favorite games on the system. Its surprizingly deep too.

I have a code for BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien if any of the regular posters here wants it, since I already had it.

Code is gone, sent to mattysemo247.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Kind of a loaded question, but looking at getting from someone a used WiiU. Concern is that the the gamepad has begun malfunctioning. The nature of the malfunction is that even at extremely close proximity, the gamepad controller does not detect the system. When it does, it functions normal until you move the gamepad even a few inches or a foot away. It displays a "lost connection with console message", not sure if the person is perhaps just doing something wrong. Has anyone encountered this issue and is it something that would have to be fixed by say Nintendo themselves? I ask, because at Gamestop they mentioned something about how the tablet is directly linked up to the specific console so say buying a used gamepad by itself on Ebay for example at least they said they believe that is why Nintendo is not selling them separately. Insight is greatly appreciated, as I know honestly I would actually do most of my gaming on a controller instead. Although I know some games can only be played with the gamepad.

The folks at your neighborhood Gamestop have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. You can sync a gamepad the same way you would a Wiimote, so you can use any gamepad with any Wii U. Nintendo has more about this on their website.

I haven't run into the issue you're describing with my Wii U. I'd guess that your friend's house is some sort of radioactive wifi wasteland that's preventing the gamepad and the Wii U from communicating, or, more likely, the hardware's on the fritz. There's definitely a range limit with the gamepad, but I've never had any trouble from anywhere in my living room.

Gamepads aren't sold separately, true, but you also can't walk into a Gamestop and buy an Xbox One power supply separately either, and the reasons are basically the same. The Wii U doesn't (currently, anyway) support more than one gamepad per system, so if it's busted, it's treated like a replacement parts situation.

I don't know what kind of deal your friend is offering, but I wouldn't take the chance. Best Buy has a Splatoon/Nintendo Land bundle for the Wii U for $275 new, and Nintendo has refurbs (with warranty, and they're indistinguishable from a brand new system) for $200 on occasion.

Syncing the gamepad is a PITA but you can absolutely sync different gamepads with different consoles.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Thx guys for the quick responses back, much appreciated. It might be worth it as he has a lot of games with it. However with E3 here I'm holding off for more news as well. And yeah I figured that with Gamespot but figured would ask the real experts here

Just saw this on Facebook:

EarthBound Beginnings: Nintendo Announces English Release of 1st Game in 'EarthBound' Series
"EarthBound Beginnings," a re-release of the series' first game in 1989, "Mother," is now available on the Wii U Virtual Console. It is the first time the game has been released outside Japan.
Here's a write up from Polygon.

There's a lot of (hopeful) speculation on reddit and NeoGaf that the timing of this and the Lucas Smash DLC are a precursor to Nintendo announcing a western release of Mother 3 at E3. Fingers crossed.

Of course, the one game that makes complete sense to help sell their tablet console won't be on the tablet console.
