Fun read on the creation of The Duke, the original Xbox controller that's being "remade" for the Xbox One.

The story of the Duke, the Xbox pad that existed because it had to

https://www.engadget.com/2018/03/23/...-duke-gamepad/

Some bits from the beginning that address the size:

It was early 2000, and the company was preparing to enter the gaming world with the Xbox. In Nov. 2001, the console was released in North America alongside the Duke, a controller that seemed comically large compared to its contemporaries. Within a year, the oversize gamepad was abandoned by Microsoft and replaced with a smaller model, but the Duke has had an impact on every controller since.

Rather than starting from scratch, Chaudhari had to work from Xbox creative director Horace Luke's concept sketches. They'd already been approved from up top, and a third-party supplier had built circuit boards based on those early drawings. Instead of coming up with the shape and ergonomics first and figuring out how to fit the device's internals into the shell after, Chaudhari needed to work backward.

She got to work, sculpting physical models with a wood-like modeling material called RenShape. You can see the legacy of Chaudhari's work in every Xbox gamepad that followed. Its A, B, X, Y face button layout and button style remain today, for starters. But it's the thumbstick placement that has made the most lasting impression on controller design. While the DualShock had parallel sticks at the bottom of the controller, the Duke's were offset, with the left sitting higher than the right by about two inches.

It wasn't until her conversations with Xbox architect Seamus Blackley, J Allard (the "father" of the console's follow-up, the Xbox 360) and her now ex-husband Rob Wyatt that Chaudhari realized the hand she'd been dealt: The circuit boards, already manufactured and ready to go, were comically oversized.

That's hilarious. Built the insides too big and had to fit a shell around it. Sounds like the silver lining is it forced them to offset the analog stick.

Maybe a dumb question but it my kid wants a dlc pack for a game do I have to add my cc to his account as well? Can I set a spending limit like I can on the PS4?

Thanks

Has anyone played Cars 2? Is it worth a download for an eight year old?

Ys Origin Dated For April on Xbox One With New Speedrun Mode

Ys Origin, the retro cult JRPG, will be coming to Xbox One this April. It'll be the first time the series has appeared on Xbox, and as such, features exclusive content especially for Xbox One players. This includes an all-new speedrun mode (with leaderboards) and a new 'blood option' enabling players to choose their ideal blood quantity during gameplay. Fair enough.

The new speedrun mode is showcased in the latest trailer below, alongside the bosses you'll face while attempting to overcome the various challenges you'll face in the Devil's Tower...

Ys Origin launches for Xbox One on 11th April. Check out the new trailer below.

The remastered version of the game will come with 4K enhancements for both the gameplay and cut scenes, as well as enhanced audio and new particle effects. On top of that, you may remember the Special Edition DLC; this particular DLC pack will also be included with the remaster.

Another episode of Inside Xbox is today, looks like these might be additions to OG XBox compatibility.

https://www.polygon.com/2018/4/10/17...ames-announced

Later today, Microsoft plans to reveal news about Xbox One backward compatibility and which original Xbox games are coming to the console next. Based on store listings at the official Xbox website, it appears at least five more original Xbox titles may soon be playable on Xbox One.

The titles that have recently appeared on the Xbox Games Store, some of which carry release dates of April 10, 2018, are:

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Destroy All Humans!
Full Spectrum Warrior
MX Unleashed
Panzer Elite Action

I own both Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (GOTY yeahie!) and Destroy All Humans! (and the sequel) on Xbox so I'm pumped about those two. Never played either one either (okay I played Morrowind for half an hour)...I bought them when I was building up my 360 library and figured I would get around to them at some point because they were BC to the 360.

Re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

Also! Six more Xbox 360 games are getting Xbox One X enhancements, including Red Dead Redemption.

https://www.polygon.com/2018/4/10/17...ic-generations

Six more Xbox 360 games that are backward compatible on Xbox One are getting enhanced updates — like improved pixel count and enhanced color depth — on Xbox One X, Microsoft announced during a livestream today. Those new Xbox One X-enhanced titles include Rockstar Games’ open-world Western Red Dead Redemption and Epic Games’ third-person shooter Gears of War 2.

Sega’s Sonic Generations, which was originally released on Xbox 360 in 2011, also joins the list of backward compatible games — and it too is now Xbox One X enhanced.

Rounding out the list are Vigil Games’ Darksiders, Valve’s Portal 2 and LucasArts’ Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
Some of the enhancements have been spectacular.

Yeah it's pretty cool

All of these Original Xbox games will take advantage of the power of Xbox One with up to 4X the pixel count on Xbox One and Xbox One S, and up to 16X the pixel count on Xbox One X.

I guess people will get excited over anything when you have no games coming out for your system.

So forgive me for maybe missing it in the thread, but on these original Xbox backward compatible games, you can either buy them new digitally or insert your original discs?

Edit to add: Thanks Jay!

Not really. I mean there has been more excitement in this thread over the last year because of 4k updates and backward compatibility then actually new games to play on it. As an Xbox one owner I find it sad.

Well I was dumb enough to buy a One X, I have to get excited about something other than slightly better looking third party games. Like slightly better looking 360 games

Yes, they work the same as the 360 games, and work with either digital purchases or the original discs, but download the BC version instead of running off the disc.

Doesn't all the discussion of Xbox games happen in, you know, the game's thread?

I mean, it's not like the PS4 thread has had a lot of discussion of games recently:
https://forum.dvdtalk.com/video-game...ttack-318.html

Sea of Thieves is probably the latest big XB1 exclusive, and has its own thread:
