I have to admit, I tried a FPS, a Hitman on some system way back. I don’t remember, but got dizzy or didn’t feel good. Never played since. Then one day, years after out, never got original, but got an Xbox 360, first game I got was Halo: Combat Evolved, which was on original, but something in me just really wanted to play it and I’ve never looked back on FPS. I almost prefer them now, will play some third person, but just have too much fun blowing shit up in a first person perspective. Never in a million years thought I would even try again, but I did and love em. Probably first real one actually was Metroid Prime on Gamecube which I finished and loved. Played it multiple times actually. Really want to play Echoes. They do have some third person elements when Samus in ball, but primarily FPS and I loved it.

So what genre do you really like or love that you never thought you would ever?

Traditional RPGs. First one I played was Phantasy Star III. I gave up cuz I kept dying not knowing I had to equip my dagger. After a few years, I gave it another try, stuck with it, and have loved them since.

Music games.

I have zero musical talent at all and a friend brought over Guitar Hero 2. I was terrible at it so it wasn't very fun. He insisted I borrow it for the weekend so I had time to give it a fair shake.

That's all it took. I was hooked and had to get my own copy ASAP. I was "all in" at that point.​​​​​

Actually this is tough...because going thru games on consoles and early PC...I was straight up a FPS Action Person...Quake, Unreal Tournament, Gears of War, Halo, COD....but I actually got into two different ones...

RPG Dungeon Hack & Slash....Diablo III..... and have stayed with it and Path of Exile. It's one of my favorite style now.

Elder Scrolls Online...always been pulled to the medieval settings with sorcery, magic, spells but never tried or played anything like it....not as much now but always entertaining and never a dull moment.
Warframe….was on my to get list day one when the PS4 was released. no-one knew what to expect because at the time, it was only on the PC with a few million players. Nothing like it and has grown, expanded like no-one dreamed of with around 42+ Million player base

My all time favorite genre is side scrolling Mario type games and some puzzles. I like RPG-lite games like Zelda (but only the top down ones). Not really crazy about others but I’ll experiment.

But for years I have loved the first two Doom games and have bought them multiple times. That Switch Lite I just found on clearance? My first two games are Doom and Doom II and I’ve been grinding the first levels over and over to re memorize the layouts.

But I don’t care for any other FPS games. Not even the modern Doom games entice me.

Probably MetroidVanias; I never personally got very far in the Metroid or Castlevania games way back in the day, and generally avoided games that were like them. But then I played games like Guacamelee, Ori, Blaster Master Zero, etc. and I think I'm now way more into the genre than I ever was.

Also TellTale-style games. Walking Dead was the gateway into the genre for a lot of folks (myself included) but the Life Is Strange series of games damn near perfected it.

I had a very similar experience. When I was younger, I was primarily a FPS-centric player -- Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, etc.

But over the last several years I've really gravitated towards RPGs - Dungeon crawlers, turn based, and even a few JRPGs. I like the more chaotic action and loot grind of a dungeon crawler, but also enjoy the slower and more tactical pace of the turn based systems. I've put at least 50 hrs on Diablo 3 on Switch, I'm currently working on Torchlight 2 for Switch, and this week I began playing Path of Exile, and it's just terrific.

And I've gotten into several MMORPGs over the years, starting with City of Heroes. I don't know why I decided to dip my toe in the genre with CoH, but I moved from that into several years of WoW, and have dabbled in several others since - The Old Republic, FFXIV, DC Universe Online.

Probably mainly Telltale style point and click, choose your adventure style games. I also was surprised to like games where you’re prepping food orders surprisingly. I have one on Vita l bought cheap (Taco Master) which I enjoy, and I know there are similar games on other platforms.

Going back a ways, but I was never into skateboarding or its culture, and the few skateboarding games I had played up to that point didn't do anything for me. But I loved the Tony Hawk games in their prime. I even enjoyed some of the games inspired by it, such as the wakeboarding title.

that's funny. i did too. had one skating game for some system long ago that i really enjoyed. doing tricks and stuff. it was long time ago so i am sure it was a primitive game, but it was fun. and then there was this one jet skiing game i liked as well. maybe these were on Dreamcast. but, don't like Sports games in general, not since NBA Jam in it's prime or TECMO Bowl or RBI, even had 1 Madden game long ago, but never got into it. so advanced now that i would be totally lost and not enjoy...

Didn’t think about the Tony Hawk games. I’ve never skateboarded but played the first four games a ton. I still own the third game for PS1 and the fourth on PS2. Last one I bought was Tony Hawk’s Project 8 on Xbox 360.

Yeah, I had a Winter Olympics title back on the Atari 800 or something like that in the 80's and I generally don't care for watching sports, but this game was done so well it was just plain fun to play the snowboarding and skiing games over and over.

I agree. I was totally blown away by how wrapped up I was in the Walking Dead storyline. It was a total emotional gut punch that I was not expecting (I had the same reaction to The Last of Us).

What exactly are these TellTale games all about? Do you have control of character? Do you fight snd stuff?

I would say Skateboarding. In fact, it got me into watching X-Games (I still have never actually set foot on a skateboard). The game I probably put the most time into on the 360 was Skate 2 which I think is still the best skateboarding game ever created.

As far as games within a genre I don't like, I absolutely fell in love with The Witcher 3. I bought a PS4 off a guy that was leaving the ship and one of the games it came with was Witcher. I got bored underway one time so I decided to pop it in. I can't stand RPGs and lose interest in most games after 50 hours but I ended up putting 80 hours into Witcher. It was one of the best gaming experience of the past decade for me. Loved it so much I'm going to re-purchase it on the Switch and play on my upcoming deployment.

You have control of a character, and there are some fights, but those are mostly quick-time events. Fighting is not the emphasis at all. The emphasis of the games are storytelling and making choices that effect the character and how the story progresses.

Originally there was a lot of puzzle solving in these kind of games too, but that was sort of de-emphasized as they went more hardcore on the storytelling. If you play the Walking Dead series, you'll notice that there is quite a few puzzles in Season One and hardly any in the latter seasons.

Telltale is a developer who has since gone under, but there are other publishers who make similar types of games.

Other Telltale games include Tales from the Borderlands, Batman the Telltale Series, Game of Thrones, The Wolf Among Us, etc.

Life is Strange is a similar game series by a different publisher which many people like even better than TellTale.

Yeah, for me something like Overcooked, which is a relatively simple to control cooking game that is surprisingly difficult to coordinate and do well in.

The telltale stuff is something I'd consider in the visual novel category (also integrated into stuff like Mass Effect). Even Phoenix Wright is like that. But yeah they do a great job.

For me, I was surprised how much I liked a life simulator where you basically spend all of your time doing menial tasks to pay off a mortgage was. But Animal Crossing was brilliant, and I eagerly await the next installment, as do my kids.

I can't stand the TellTale games. I borrowed a Batman one from the library a while back and was so bored I literally left the room in the middle of the stage. But my wife had been watching me play and was invested in the story, so she picked it up and finished the whole game.

I like TellTale games to an extent because I love old Adventure games, but TellTales games are more like interactive movies than those.

Telltale was making old style adventure games (Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Strong Badd's Cool Game for Attractive people, etc.) pretty much right up until they started making Walking Dead. As I was saying before, the first season still has some elements of that, but it quickly devolved just to interactive stories from there.
