I had a pair of gloves, but lost one of them. That means there's only one glove now, just like Michael Jackson used to wear! I'll sell it to you for $1,000.

Cool, I didn't know this was OOP. I just picked it up at Borders for $24.99 with the 50% off coupon yesterday.

Sweet, maybe now we'll get a reasonably priced edition. Although, I'm sure we'll have months and months of... "I spotted one of these at X store."

I own the LE two-disc DVD tin that came out many years ago.

Is it worth it to upgrade to the BD now that it's OOP? I saw a few copies at a local store here in Vegas and is curious if it's even worth it for $45.

I'm torn on that. I owned both the tin and the stand-alone DTS edition; the tin is worth it for Akira Production Files alone, which unfortunately is not on the Blu-ray. Kind of ridiculous that they used so much space on the disc for a massive sound file, but I can't actually utilize that soundtrack on my receiver so it seems like a waste to me, maybe not others. Plus I believe they've actually changed some of the audio from the last release, if I remember reading correctly. But the PQ is a definite improvement, if that's your main reason for upgrading.

And I don't think the Akira BRD is OOP altogether, just the limited first edition in the slipcase.

Well, I was disappointed that the extras from the tin weren't included (luckily, I had the tin, so I held onto it). With that said, I did think the video quality was quite good. I don't know if I'd go right out and pay $45 for it (without the knowledge that it was OOP, anyway), but I'm glad I snagged it at Best Buy with the sleeve for $30 when I had the chance.

question: to hear the Dolby Digital TrueHD in 192Hz/24bit - all new receivers can decode this ... right?

This is also getting an Australian release through Madman. Will be interesting to see what they do with it after their stellar Transformers: The Movie (1986) disc

My onkyo 606 and Player, I had to change some settings to get that track to play correctly. I bitstream from the player to reciever. SO I had to change the setti ng in the player to lpcm. Then I had to change the 192khz setting to direct on the receiver, and that worked. If I didn't do that, the center channel wouldn't work and both l and r channels were fronted. I contacted both the player and receiver companies, the panasonic tech support went over everything with me to find the correct settings that work. I forget why I couldn't bitstream the audio.

Interesting. I wonder if it will have the Streamline dub.

I've been meaning to pick-up the R4 DVD just for that.

I own the TIN and the R3 (Taiwan, Full-bitrate DTS) disc and I upgraded to the BD for the PQ.

On my Onkyo 706 it is simply bitstreamed to the receiver and decoded properly. It does take about 10 seconds for audio to start playing and it automatically goes to "direct" mode (can't use THX modes) properly playing the 192khz track.

Well, direct mode also disables bass management, and, in some cases, volume levels on a per-channel basis (not to mention other processing like DPLIIx or EQ). All that for a track you probably couldn't differentiate from a 48khz track from an equivalent source in a blind test.

I have a PS3 and send PCM to my Onkyo 606. I found that I only got a stereo signal for Akira, despite following comments somewhere to put the sound into DIRECT.

I've finally had some time to sit with the manual for this, and found that you can adjust the sound using the LISTENING MODES, which I have never touched. According to the manual' audio chart on page 58, if you use the MOVIE/TV listening mode, say Multichannel, then 192kHz is not available.

If you use the MUSIC listening mode on DIRECT, then 192 is available. It seems you can use any listening mode with any source. Rather confusing!

Would it make sense to simply leave the LISTENING MODE on MUSIC and DIRECT? According to page 58, that mode can handle every sound option.

I'll actually trade my tin for the same version of Akira in a regular DVD case. It's too bulky for my shelf and I never meant to order the tin anyways. It's what came to me straight from Amazon years ago.

The glue is coming undone on the plastic inside though...

I didn't think Funimation's re-issue was coming until next year.

Just a FYI, the FUNimation release will include the Streamline dub. If that makes a difference in your purchase decision.

What's the streamline dub?
