Never heard of Watership Down until this thread. After reading a few of the reviews off Amazon and Goodreads, I headed on over to ebay and purchased a copy. It sounds like a very profound story with various metaphors and themes that humans can relate to. It also seems like it can be a bit of a tough read at times, though. Should I have my Kleenex ready?

The following comments are for those who have already read the book. Don't want to spoil anything (even though there aren't really spoilers in my comments?):

Watership Down is one of a handful of books I definitely want to read before I die. I’ve never head of anyone reading it and not loving it.
Also on that list: Animal Farm, the Redwall series, and the Earthsea series.

They are all quite different but all worth reading.

Never heard of the Redwall series, so I Googled it. It's listed as "children's book". Should I let that be a concern, or does that mean it's still good - just doesn't have a lot of sex?

No sex, but plenty of deaths. And so many food references. Don’t read if you’re trying to diet.

Dieting is not a concern Looking for the book now. Just snagged A Wizard of Earthsea, too. This thread has been very handy for helping me get books I have overlooked - or never heard of!

It’s not required reading nor does it “ruin” the original. It’s just a few other little bits.

Also have somehow never read his other novels. Any recommendations there?

I haven't read Watership Down since I was a teenager. We just watched the movie and we liked that. I suppose I should read it again.
I read the Earthsea Trilogy about the same time. Good stuff. The first book was The Hero Discovered, which of course appealed to me the most. I should re-read those too. I'm sure that at my age now I'll get a lot more out of the book about death.

I Love You, Beth Cooper by Larry Doyle
It's hilarious. They made a poor movie adaptation of it though. The book is so much better than the movie.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a personal favorite of mine in high school.
I also really like the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith, but the author is quite controversial right now. The TV series adaptation is quite good.

Of his other works, I've only read Plague Dogs and be prepared to have your heart ripped right out of your ribcage with that one.

My favorite book is "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens, followed closely by "The Crying of Lot 49" by Thomas Pynchon.
