Re: DC Comics Cuts Ties with Diamond

From Bleedingcool:

Multiple people have mentioned Mark Doyle, Executive Editor at DC Black Label, as an early casualty. Which, considering that Black Label (aside from the likes of Last God) remains a strong profit centre for DC Comics – in comic stores, bookstores and foreign sales especially. But the … exposure of Batman: Damned still casts a long shadow at the publisher. We have heard mention from various sources, of various reliability, that Vice President, Global Publishing Initiatives & Digital Strategy Bobbie Chase. DC Editor Andy Khouri, DC Senior Story Editor Brian Cunningham, SVP Publishing Strategy & Support Services at DC, Hank Kanalz and DC Editor-In-Chief Bob Harras are also rumoured to be laid off. If true, this would be one of the biggest editorial changes in DC Comics' history. But I am also getting contradictory information that some – like Hank – seems to have survived. And DC Collectibles may have been sidelined off elsewhere, to be licensed outside of DC – too much cost, timer and attention for the revenue it brings in. No one is making any of this up, but there are games of telephone being played out across the industry right now. Or should that be games of WhatsApp, Zoom, Slack. Discord or even Google Hangouts?. I am being told from multiple sources that Marie Javins Executive Editor of Global Publishing Initiatives & Digital Strategy at DC Comics may be further elevated in this new reality.
https://bleedingcool.com/comics/dc-c...-on-right-now/

And Bleedingcool also has a copy of the memo that was sent out, letting everyone know how awesome they are, and that they're no longer needed at the new streamlined and efficient Warner Bros, who seem to be going on some kind of mission...

https://bleedingcool.com/comics/dc-c...niverse-first/

Team-

It has been a little over 90 days since I joined the mission and the team. These past three months have exceeded my already high expectations. As I shared with you recently, my bullishness about our future has only grown as I have gotten to know you much better and as I have gotten to know our company much better. As some of you may recall, I shared three thoughts with you on my first day email:
  1. That history was filled with examples of special entrepreneurial companies that leaned into moments of great change in order to better serve customers.
  2. That our taking smart and bold risks is so important to the road ahead. And,
  3. My belief that missionary companies ultimately shine…and my strong belief that ours is a team filled with missionaries.
With the above as context, I'd like to share some decisions I am announcing today that represent our leaning into this great moment of change, in order to better serve our customers. These changes, which are neither timid nor without risk, are possible in part because we are missionaries that ultimately believe we can and will change the world through story. That is what this all comes back to.

Because of the gift that is the internet, we have what I believe is one of the greatest opportunities in the history of media, which is to deliver our beloved stories and experiences directly to hundreds of millions of consumers across the globe. Earning this ambitious future won't come easy. To do so, I believe it is vital that we change how we are organized, that we simplify, and that we act boldly and with urgency. The pandemic's economic pressures and acceleration of direct-to-consumer streaming adoption places an even higher premium on these points.

To accomplish this, we are going to do the following:
  1. We are elevating HBO Max in the organization and expanding its scope globally.
  2. We are simplifying how we organize our studios.
  3. We are creating a consolidated International unit focused on scale and efficiency.
  4. We are bringing our key commercial activities into one group to allow us to operate more strategically.
  5. We are making other structural changes that will help us operate more effectively and efficiently.
Andy Forssell, General Manager of HBO Max, will now be leading a newly created HBO Max operating business unit and report to me. Andy and his team will be responsible for the product, marketing, consumer engagement and global rollout of HBO Max.

Ann Sarnoff, Warner Bros. Chair and CEO, will be leading our newly created Studios and Networks Group, combining original production (content studios) and programming capabilities currently spread across Warner Bros., HBO, HBO Max, TNT, TBS and TruTV. This group will oversee all WarnerMedia television series and motion picture development, production and programming, partnering with Andy to ensure HBO Max is successful globally.
  • Casey Bloys, President HBO Programming, will also be taking on original content responsibilities for HBO Max and the domestic linear networks TNT, TBS, and TruTV. Casey will report to Ann. Casey and the HBO team have done an incredible job over the last several decades delighting consumers with HBO original programming and I am excited for Casey and this expanded team to have an even greater impact on the world.
  • The Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group continues to be led by Chairman Toby Emmerich. Warner Bros. Television Studios group continues to be led by Chairman Peter Roth. Warner Bros. Interactive remains part of the Studios and Networks group, along with our Global Brands and Franchises team including DC led by Pam Lifford, and our Kids, Young Adults and Classics business led by Tom Ascheim, all focused on engaging fans with our brands and franchises through games and other interactive experiences.
Gerhard Zeiler, currently Chief Revenue Officer, will now be leading a newly integrated international group comprised of the international operations of Warner Bros., HBO and Turner Networks. This group will be responsible for local execution of all WarnerMedia linear businesses, commercial activities, and regional programming for HBO Max.

Tony Goncalves, CEO of Otter and a key leader of HBO Max, will lead the new commercial unit that combines the U.S. advertising sales and distribution groups with our home entertainment and content licensing so that all commercial activities are strategically managed across internal and external customers.

Christy Haubegger, Chief Enterprise Inclusion Officer, will now also oversee the global marketing and communications team including branding and corporate social responsibility, as we bring together all of our efforts around equity and inclusion throughout our business.

Jeff Zucker continues as Chairman of WarnerMedia News and Sports. Pascal Desroches (CFO), Rich Tom (CTO), Jim Cummings (CHRO), Priya Dogra (EVP, Strategy and Corporate Development) and Jim Meza (EVP, General Counsel) continue to report to me.

Simplifying our approach and narrowing our focus goes beyond, for example, having one content organization vs two. It also means that we will be reducing the size of our teams, our layers, and our overall workforce. These reductions are not in any way a reflection of the quality of the people impacted nor their work. It is simply a function of the above changes I believe are necessary for WarnerMedia and our collective ability to best serve customers. This is the part that is painful and very hard. It is difficult to find the appropriate words here to say other than that I am very sorry. These are talented, admired leaders and beloved colleagues.

Three of those talented, admired leaders who will be leaving the company are Bob Greenblatt, Kevin Reilly and Keith Cocozza. I want to thank Bob and Kevin for getting us to this point with the integration of HBO and the legacy Turner Networks and launch of HBO Max. It has been such an impressive sequence of events, and we are so much better for it. I also owe a tremendous amount of gratitude and thanks to Keith, for not only helping me navigate these last few months at the company – and with the media – but more importantly for his 19 years at the company through its evolution. I have never met a kinder, more collaborative executive in my career. I can't wait to see how each of these leaders change the world in the years to come.

I realize this is a lot to take in. And none of us should expect the above changes to be easy. That said, we are successfully navigating a pandemic together and I know that, however challenging the above changes may be, we will also successfully navigate them as well. As each of you take some time to digest the above, I hope that you become more and more energized by how, together, we are boldly leaning into the future and this historic opportunity that is right in front of us. It is an honor to be on this team with each of you.

DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras Among Several DC Comics Layoffs

By Christian Hoffer - August 10, 2020 08:25 pm EDT
DC Comics has reportedly experienced a major shake-up, with editor-in-chief Bob Harras and several other editors among the employees laid off and Jim Lee demoted from his publishing role. ComicBook.com has learned that several employees including Harras, Mark Doyle, Brian Cunningham, and Andy Khouri are all out of the publisher. Lee remains at the company, but ComicBook.com has learned that he no longer holds the title of publisher. Lee's new role will be to act as a liaison between DC and other brands of Warner Media. ComicBook.com has also learned that a new general manager "from the world of esports" is being brought in to lead the division. More cuts are also expected. ComicBook.com has reached out to DC Comics for comment but has not received a reply as of press time.

The layoffs are part of a wider restructuring at parent company Warner Bros., caused by the entertainment company experiencing huge dips in profits due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Warner Bros. has allegedly laid off approximately 600 employees including CFO Kim Williams. As part of this restructure, Warner Bros. is expected to "elevate" HBO Max and expanding its scope globally, which is expected to lead to a shuttering of the DC Universe streaming service.

The news comes as Warner Bros prepares to launch its DC FanDome event, a massive online event meant to replace some of the buzz and excitement typically found at conventions like San Diego Comic-Con. However, DC FanDome also represents some of the challenges faced by Warner Bros. in recent months -- the company had to move its eagerly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 movie due to cascading theater shutdowns, and it has also seen production of several TV projects delayed due to the pandemic. DC Comics was directly affected by the pandemic when comics stores in the U.S. were forced to shut down for nearly a month after Diamond Comics announced it was shutting down due to safety concerns. DC ended the forced industry-wide shutdown when it announced it was working with newly formed alternative distributors. DC later ended their exclusive distribution contract with Diamond in favor of these new distributors.

While DC has announced several high-profile projects like Tom King and Mitch Gerads' Rohrshach, other longterm plans for the company have seemingly been on hold for months, even before the pandemic temporarily shut down the comics direct market.

DC has faced several challenges in recent years, ranging from the unsuccessful launch of a planned Generation event meant to unify the various eras of the DC Universe into a more cohesive continuity to the poor PR related to the company's Black Label, a "mature" line of comics featuring a mix of in-continuity and out-of-continuity stories. As the company lost market share to rival Marvel Comics, Warner Bros. fired longtime DC Comics publisher Dan DiDio earlier this year. DC has also suffered from mixed performances at the box office, with underperforming movies leading to Geoff Johns, whose career was built on the success of his comics, stepping down as an executive from DC Entertainment. Johns remains a producer for Warner Bros. and co-wrote the screenplay for Wonder Woman 1984. Warner Bros. also shuttered publication of MAD magazine in 2019.
0commentsHowever, despite its struggles in the movie and direct comics market, DC has found success in bookstores thanks to a line of graphic novels aimed at young readers. ComicBook.com has yet to hear any word on future plans for those publishing plans either.

ComicBook.com will continue to report on these layoffs as more news becomes available.

The new general manager coming from e-sports is not giving me a good vibe. Having outsiders to the business making decisions always leads to a shit product.

Re: DC Comics Cuts Ties with Diamond

I hear Hank Kanalz might get laid off, what a shame. He has a pretty interesting history in comics.

He helped develop Youngblood with Rob Liefeld way back in the late 1980s.

Hell, he even designed the iconic Image "i"logo (or at least co-designed it, Liefeld said in a podcast that they both took turns drawing prototype logos).

in 2004, he transitioned from running Warner Bros. Theme Parks to being WildStorm's general manager. So, interesting that he has extensive background both with Image's founders and the Warner corporate family.

More news from Implosion 2020

Jim Lee, Bob Harras, Marie Javins In New DC Comics Implosion Rumors

Posted on August 10, 2020 | by Rich Johnston | CommentsEarlier today, Bleeding Cool posted the news that DC Comics staffers, along with the rest of Warner Bros were undergoing a downsizing of staff. At the time, we were lead to believe that the brunt would be felt by DC Universe, as part of an alignment of streaming services being offered. But instead, it became rapidly clear that DC Comics editorial was being targeted in a major way for such changes. With everyone describing this as the DC Bloodbath – or New DC Implosion – and on a Monday as well.
Jim Lee, Bob Harras, Marie Javins In New DC Comics Implosion RumorsThis New DC Implosion seems to have all-but-confirmed the departure of Mark Doyle, Executive Editor at DC Black Label. Other named, repeatedly now, include DC Editor-In-Chief Bob Harras. Vice President, Global Publishing Initiatives & Digital Strategy Bobbie Chase. DC Editor Andy Khouri, DC Senior Story Editor Brian Cunningham, and SVP Publishing Strategy & Support Services at DC, Hank Kanalz. That DC Collectibles will be wound up as a line of statues and toys, with the rights licensed elsewhere to the like of Mattel or Hasbro.

But we are now getting a better shape as to what DC Comics will be looking like going forward. Because, as to whether Jim Lee remains as COO and Publisher, I am told that he will be transitioning out of that role, with current Executive Editor of Global Publishing Initiatives & Digital Strategy at DC Comics Marie Javins and Vice President and Executive Editor, DC Children's/Young Adult Michele Wells promoted, effectively running publishing, and reporting to Jim. For now.

But I have also been told that Eddy Choi, Executive Assistant to Jim Lee, Sandy Resnick, International Publishing, Ad Sales & Custom Creative Studio and Sara Haskell, Marketing Director are out. As are Michael Shelling, Director of Publicity (Publishing) at DC. Jonah Weiland, VP of Marketing & Creative Services and Jim Sokolowski, VP, Comic Book Specialty & Newsstand Sales.

Again, none of these dismissals or appointments have been officially confirmed by DC or Warners, although multiply sourced, and DC Comics continue to not comment. There are likely to be errors, and changing statuses will not have been reflected either. I have done my best to investigate contradictory reports and try and find out just what is going on, but I know I will be missing things.

But I am told that these layoffs will have an immediate effect on the publication of DC Comics monthly titles, and I am to expect a rapid reduction of titles. If you thought DC Comics published an unhealthy percentage of Batman books, you ain't seen nothing yet. The Batbooks, most of the Justice League books and some of the Superman books will stay safe, as will the digital line, the original graphic novel line. But a lot of comics will have to disappear as there simply aren't enough people to work on them. Scott Snyder will be very grateful for Marie Javins' elevated role…

Because the plan is for publishing to definitely continue, but I am to expect a greater emphasis on digital and bookstore rather than the comic book shop, for now at least.
Headline from the original 1948 DC Implosion. The original DC Implosion was the unofficial name for what followed the promotional campaign "DC Explosion" in 1978 launching many new titles – for about three months. However, DC experienced ongoing poor sales from the winter of 1977 to the winter of 1978. This has been attributed in part to the North American blizzards in 1977 and 1978, which both disrupted distribution and curtailed consumer purchases, alongside economic inflation, recession, and increased paper and printing costs, Meetings were held to cut back books – Detective Comics was to be terminated with Detective Comics #480, until the decision was overturned after a strenuous argument, and Detective was instead merged with the better-selling Batman Family. But in June 1978, DC Comics announced staff layoffs, including Al Milgrom and Larry Hama and the cancellation of 40% of its line.

More concrete info

DC Comics, DC Universe Hit By Major Layoffs

AUGUST 10, 2020 5:41PM by Graeme McMillan , Borys Kit DC ComicsThe majority of staff of the streaming service DC Universe has been laid off, as has editor-in-chief Bob Harras and multiple other executives on the publishing side.

Monday's WarnerMedia layoffs have affected a significant number of high-level figures at comic book powerhouse DC, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Among those said to be losing their positions are editor-in-chief Bob Harris, senior VP of publishing strategy and support services Hank Kanalz, VP of marketing and creative services Jonah Weiland, VP global publishing initiatives and digital strategy Bobbie Chase, senior story editor Brian Cunningham, and executive editor Mark Doyle, who oversaw the rollout of the Black Label graphic novels. Jim Lee remains the CCO.

Roughly one third of DC's editorial ranks are being laid off, according to sources.

Insiders also say the majority of the staff of the streaming service DC Universe has been laid off, a move that had been widely expected as WarnerMedia shifts its focus to new streaming service HBO Max.

"DC Universe was DOA as soon as the AT&T merger happened,” said one source.

DC Universe launched in May 2018, and is home to live-action series such as Doom Patrol, Titans and Stargirl, as well as animated offerings including Young Justice and Harley Quinn. Some of those shows have now started to stream on HBO Max.

Also a victim of the layoffs: DC Direct, the company’s in-house merchandise and collectibles manufacturer. The division has been shuttered after 22 years, another move that was rumored when Warner Bros. Consumer Products began taking a more active role in DC merchandising.

A DC spokesperson declined to comment on the changes, which come less than two weeks before the planned Aug. 22 online event DC Fandome, which is set to showcase stars from DC's film, TV and comic book worlds.

So, anyone want to lay down bets on how long the esports guy will last? Might be time for Warner Bros to give serious consideration to outsourcing their comic book and animation division.

I really liked a lot of the DC Direct (or DC Collectibles) figures. Shame seeing that shut down.

DC Universe was an ill-conceived concept from the get-go. It needed to be a part of whatever streaming service Warner Bros. had/has/will have instead of its own separate entity. Streaming is already Balkanized enough as it is; we don't need studios breaking their own content down into their own little competing fiefdoms. (To borrow a phrase from JMS.)

I can't find anything to suggest that any of WB's animation-related operations are being directly impacted by the downsizing. Where are you are getting that from?

As for bets, I'd rather bet on what third-party comic book publisher will DC outsource to when/if worse comes to worse?

My money is on either IDW (they do Superman newspaper strip collections and such) or Dark Horse (they did some crossovers recently). Maybe both could do DC titles, like how they both currently publish Disney-licensed books.

I hope against the Marvel Unlimited-style digital comics subscription service stays.

Otherwise, reading DC's backlog en masse is a fool's errand.

I was saying it wasn’t a good idea from the get go. I truly don’t know why they ever thought it had to be a separate service. Especially when Disney+ was announced at the time already, and included everything Disney as well as Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, etc. WB should have focused on a similar service with DC as a part of it like they’re doing now.

They weren't ready yet to make one unified service. Heck, you could argue that they aren't ready now, what with the status of Batman Begins, Dark Knight, and Harry Potter reverting back to Peacock.

To me the big mistake was in just milking the fanbase. DC Universe was never the central hub of everything DC, and that's what it needed to be to be attractive. It didn't even have any of the modern movies on it, nor any of the CW series (I realize they couldn't because of Netflix). The movies it did have rotated out regularly. The content of the service was minimal. Thankfully they actually drastically improved the comics section but their first try was "curated titles." And the comic section was probably the last remaining thing that was worthwhile about it as a separate service as they basically cancelled or made everything non exclusive over time.

I expected this to happen once At&t took over. It was always going to come sooner or later. Cutting ties with Diamond was the signal they didn't plan on publishing as many monthly books. Pretty much anything outside Batman, Superman and the Justice League is on the chopping block.

DC Comics Town Hall Meeting Happening Now – Press Releases To Follow

Posted on August 11, 2020 | by Rich Johnston | CommentsRight now, Warner Bros and DC Comics are holding a 'town hall' meeting with DC staffers about all the changes that have been leaked out in fits and starts over the last couple of days, dubbed the DC Bloodbath. DC Staff and executives – those that are still on board – have been invited to a Zoom or Zoom-style meeting (other communication solutions are available) with senior Warners figures to talk through the broad brush strokes and maybe even answer a few questions. It is always possible.
The logo for DC Comics' Black Label lineThe announcement of Marie Javins and Michele Wells being given leading publishing roles, while reporting into Jim Lee as CCO, is what most people are currently talking about. They are well known for having different creative focuses and entirely different business goals

Executive Editor of Global Publishing Initiatives & Digital Strategy Marie Javins is seen more as a comic book industry lifer – with a big world-travelling sabbatical in the middle when Marvel went through what DC are going through right now. If anyone is there to preserve much of the old spirit of DC Comics – and American comic books in general, it is her. She also has a reputation for just getting things done on deadline against impossible odds.

Executive Editor, DC Children's/Young Adult, Michele Wells has more of a children's book background at Disney, First Book and DK, and has been at DC for coming up to four years, headlining the Children's and Young Adult books at DC. Michele is also closer to Warner Bros President, Global Brands, Franchises, and Experiences Pamela Lifford, and has a reputation for scheduling work long into the future – so deadlines are less of an issue.

DC Comics has had a habit of hiring figures at odds with one another's priorities in senior roles – recently once might consider Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns for example. Could this be continuing that game place, create division to inspire and to focus creative thought and solutions?

We are to expect confirmation of layoffs, new roles and new mission statements from DC Comics soon – maybe that Two Year Plan we have been hearing about – initially sent to websites that DC describes as their media partners. So expect the most tamer of headlines – initially.

I think it's a good move to elevate Michele Wells if she's been behind the YA line. That's something that I feel they should definitely expand (not sure how the books they put out did but I'd think that would be an avenue of growth, having YA graphic novels based around their characters but not super tied into continuity like their Raven book, among others)

Re: DC Comics Cuts Ties with Diamond

DC's just-released November solicitations reveal that Teen Titans, Young Justice, Suicide Squad, Hawkman, and John Constantine: Hellblazer are all cancelled in November
YJ and Hawkman are IMO are 2 of their best books currently.

Wow. They are probably revamping but I'm surprised about stuff like Teen Titans and Suicide Squad which has broader recognition in terms of name value. Heck even Aquaman.

And this is why DC fails in contrast to Marvel. Disney see Marvel as a content creator while Warnermedia/AT&T on sees them as IP. Marvel keeps expanding and evolving its characters. DC won't move forward and will always go back to Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.

This digital initiative is not going to work if they keep the prices at what they are right now. People are almost not willing to pay $3.99 for a print book, so there are less chances that they'll buy digital at the same price when they can't claim ownership for the product and the collectability is gone. They just need to look at the boneheaded idea that Topps did with their digital trading cards and how they fail miserably. I know they want to reach to new audiences, but focusing on digital first is not the answer. They need to focus on both, and more importantly, have books reach newer generations.

Yeah, this is going to be a problem. Warner Bros. seems intent on the other media (movies, etc.) driving the comic book business via "synergy" and not the other way around. Maybe I'm wrong, but the movie side with a few exceptions has been dismal creatively so I don't get the appeal.

Having said that, I'm not collecting anything on a monthly basis from DC so it's not like I'm contributing to the comics side.
