Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

A couple more to add to my list...

Bob Layton : I know he's had many roles in his career, but his inks over Bright (as well as his own pencils) on Iron Man is what hooked me on comics. Sleek, crisp, futuristic suit that wasn't so much of a transformer look. His Hercules minis and GN were also favorites.

Mark Waid: HIs run on The Flash was great; adding to the mythology and really working-in the legacy aspect. His work on Legion of Super-Heroes and Captain America also brought some prestige to those characters. And I know there is some differences of opinion where Ross ended and Waid began, but Kingdon Come is my favorite comic book story, and I think the combination of both is where the magic happened.

My list:
Keith Giffen
Mark Waid
Bob Layton
John Byrne
George Perez
Gary Larson
Garth Ennis
Geoff Johns

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

Day Twenty-Four Response and Wrap—Up

I love Gene Colan’s art and loved seeing his stuff show up at so many different companies up until his last few years. Horror is perhaps my favorite genre in comics, and he was great there. Pretty much the same thoughts on Gray Morrow.

Not a big Larson fan, but admire his perseverance and love of the hobby.

Sean Philips is one of my favorite current artists. He and Brubaker are so great together.

Mike Ploog would make my artists only list. Every time I see his name I think of the deluxe signed version of his art book that I bought used online and the seller had ripped out his signature page before sending it.

Love Don Rosa but only room for one Duck artist in my top ten.

Steve Rude is amazing, and I’ve probably spent more money at his website than any other creator’s.

Dave Stevens would be on my top ten if life was fairer and he had more years to create. If I had space for posters, his would be in my walls. Need to make room for at least that Mr Monster one.

Tillie Walden has no right to be this good this young. Spinning was amazing and I need to get to the other books of her’s soon. I think she might be the youngest Eisner winner.

But all no's today for my top ten.
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Carl Barks
Alan Moore
Mike Mignola
Jeff Lemire
Bernie Wrightson
Matt Wagner

I mean I don't think anyone is beating Katie Mignola for youngest Eisner award winner anytime soon but youngest solo award, sure.

Day Twenty-Five Choices

As I made these daily drops I'd cut some off to keep the size down each day and ended up with a bit of a hodgepodge of remainders from those lists. These are some who remain. Today Iet’s see if Kevin Huizenga, Juanjo Guarnido, Michael Golden, Alison Bechdel, Craig Thompson, Lewis Trondheim, Jim Sternako, or David Lloyd are in your top 10.

Also want to pay respect to one name cats Seth and Jason.

And going to ask if Stan Sakai is on your list.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

Sakai is awesome, and besides Usagi the fact that he's the letterer on Groo is still amazing to me, but man I can't put him up there.

Jason is also amazing, but ditto. At this point the top is too crowded and we haven't even gone deep into manga yet, so nothing today.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

A lot of the names today are unfamiliar to me, so I'll just mention the two that I have the most experience with.

Steranko is amazing. It's a shame that he didn't do more work (not a shame for him since he probably made more money in advertising or whatever it is that he did), but what he did do was so revolutionary. If he had stuck with comics for longer he'd probably be on my list. I have Kirby on my list, but I prefer Steranko as far as 60's Marvel artists. His limited output keeps him off. I know I said the opposite about Jeff Smith, but I was exposed to Smith at a more formative time and it's my list and I can do what I want.

Stan Sakai is equally as amazing. I appreciate Usagi more than I love it, but I'm in awe of Sakai's talent and longevity. I don't think he's that close to making my top 10, but I have nothing but the utmost respect.

Current list:
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Alan Moore
John Byrne
Chris Claremont
Brian K. Vaughan
Ed Brubaker
Geoff Johns
Jim Lee
Jeff Smith

Miller is itching to be dropped. And as much as I love Brubaker, the more I think about it, the more I'm wavering. If Steranko ever delivered the Nick Fury Artist Edition vol.2 he's been promising IDW for years, I would put him on.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

Stan Sakai -- yes. All the yes. I started reading Usagi Yojimbo in the late 80s and have read and collected every issue. I'm a sucker for samurai heroic fiction and Sakai understands every last nuance of the genre. Both the comic and the character remain my favorites in the entirety of the genre.

My Top Ten:
Kurt Busiek
John Byrne

Garth Ennis
Neil Gaiman
Jack Kirby
Frank Miller
Alan Moore
Grant Morrison
George Perez
Stan Sakai

Honorable Mentions:
Chris Claremont
Darwyn Cooke
Jose Luis Garcia Lopez
Geoff Johns

Keith Giffen
Bob Layton

Stan Lee
Jim Shooter
Walt Simonson
Mark Waid

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

None of today's candidates do much for me, so...

My list remains (for now)...

John Romita SR
John Buscema
John Byrne
John Romita Jr

Neal Adams
Gerry Conway
Marv Wolfman
George Perez
Gil Kane
Stan Lee

Cut from the list, but still great...

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

I'd rank Sakai up there with Kurosawa in terms of samurai storytelling. Does that get him into my top 10? I'll need to think about that.

I met Steranko at SDCC in 2005 or 2006. I asked him to sign my Nick Fury TPB, but he wouldn't because it was a copy that Marvel printed overseas to avoid paying him royalties. I was a little bummed, but he talked with me for like 10 minutes, which I considered way better than getting an autograph.

He came to a local con a few years back and I got him to sign my sketchbook, the only artist I've asked to simply sign that book.

Despite that, I don't think Steranko makes my top 10.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

Day Twenty-Five Response and Wrap—Up

Sadly, several of these creators are still pretty much unknown to me, some likely buried in my various backlog piles/boxes/rooms. Wimbledon Green by Seth looks amazing, but I’m only a few pages in so far.

Michael Golden was my guy back in the day. Micronauts is part of my comics foundation. It and Plop are the two books most responsible for me being a collector. That first year of Micronauts is nearly perfect. I followed him to The ‘Nam, and he became one of the few artists I ever searched back issue bins for anything they ever did. That said, I don't have any more space for ‘just’ artists on my list, so he goes to my probably about full ‘just art’ top ten list.

I love love love the several books by Jason that I've read so far. Have a couple more, and some Richard Sala books, on order right now. I feel like he could get into my top ten someday, if he keeps producing stuff like he has so far.

Love Jim Sternako, but just not enough comic output.

Stan Sakai would be top ten if it was based solely on skill and perseverance, but as much as I love Usagi, it doesn’t evoke feelings and personal memories like other works. Probably because I’m mostly just buying them all and not reading the darn books.

So I still stand at eight:
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Carl Barks
Alan Moore
Mike Mignola
Jeff Lemire
Bernie Wrightson
Matt Wagner

Day Twenty-Six Choices

Today I want to get to a few creators who are those we all know to be masters and who I think are monsters but often I think are backseated to more famous people on books they work with (usually Alan Moore lol)

Today I ask if Rick Veitch, Stephen Bissette, Eddie Campbell, Frank Quietly, Kevin O’Neil, Eduardo Risso, or Mark Buckingham are in your top 10.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

Long list. Kevin Huizenga, Juanjo Guarnido, Michael Golden, Alison Bechdel, Craig Thompson, Lewis Trondheim, Jim Sternako, David Lloyd, Seth, Jason, and Stan Sakai

Of that list, Michael Golden is my favorite. With Micronauts and The 'Nam being the only comics he had "long" runs on, he's cemented his place as one comic's great talents. Steranko too, with just his runs on Nick Fury and Captain America, is one of the greats. Despite that, I don't rank them or any of the other creators mentioned in my Top 10.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

Despite the fact that some of these guys are responsible for the art on many of my all-time favorite comics (New X-Men, LXG, 100 Bullets, Fables), none of them make the list. Seeing Eddie Campbell reminds me I also need to dive back into From Hell one of these days. And I really need to finish Swamp Thing. So many good comics...

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

My list remains unchanged, but I'm a huge Frank Quitely fan. I think his art, while quite stylized, is pretty freakin' great. All Star Superman alone, between Grant Morrison's writing and Quitely's art, was one of the best mainstream superhero books of the last 25 years. Probably the best Superman tale as well.

No longer an active participant (I guess I'm the guy watching the pick-up game at the park and making unwanted commentary) but I love Bissette and Veitch's horror work and participation in the late '80s weirdbeard charge. The One is a very fun short-run comic. Bissette seems to be pretty cantankerous so I had to stop following him on FB though.

I haven't even heard of anyone on today's list of nominees, so none of them mean anything to me.

Day Twenty-Six Response and Wrap—Up

Eddie Campbell might come close if I re-read From Hell and finally read Bacchus.

Admire Veitch for his don’t-give-a-damn attitude and how he somehow took over for Alan Moore and kept the book at pretty much the same highest level.

The rest are great artists, but none have runs that really move me, so my list stays at eight.
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Carl Barks
Alan Moore

Day Twenty-Seven Choices

Back to knock out a few more as I look at some of those panels people are really showing off.

Today I want to to know if Pat Mills, John Wagner, Fiona Staples, or Jim Starlin is in your top 10.

I also want to throw one modern team out there for you who. Any Scott Snyder or Greg Capullo lovers out there?

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?

Starlin is l one I've been waiting for. I adore his Captain Marvel/Warlock stuff from the 70's up through Death of Captain Marvel. I think Infinity Gauntlet is a bit overrated, but it's still a lot of fun, and it might be peak George Perez. Dreadstar is a title I've always meant to dive into. And of course he's the co-creator of Shang-Chi. He didn't work on the character long, and Doug Moench is really responsible for the title's glory years, but I LOVE Master of Kung-Fu, so he gets bonus points there. I haven't read much of his modern work. I assume it's not as good as the older stuff, but that older stuff is enough to make the list.

I don't know Mills or Wagner. Saga is great, but Staples doesn't make the list. Capullo is a sentimental favorite because I loved his X-Force run, but he and Snyder don't make the cut either.

So the question is who gets dropped for Starlin? I had been thinking Miller would get bumped, but I really love Daredevil. Brubaker is great, but I don't know if I truly love any of his work. It's all really good, and I'll read anything he writes, but I don't know if I love any of it in my heart of hearts. Damn this made up list for forcing me to make consequence free choices!
