Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
Ok, stealing this idea from a Slack group I’m in. Might not be enough active comic contributors here to make this work, but let’s try. I’ll keep everyone’s list updated in the wiki post if it takes off.
Rather than everyone just blurt out our top ten, it’s going to be a gradual process where everycouple days I’ll give you a creator or five and you have to decide if they go into your top ten. Decide what makes it a top ten individually, no quibbling over whether it’s based on historical importance or personal preference or ‘favorite’ versus ‘best’ or anything else, it’s entirely up to you what ‘top ten’ means. Just know you’re limited to 10 over the course of the experiment so choose wisely.

I don't know if my comic fandom is as varied as you guys', so it may be hard to come up with a top 10. But I would give a no for Frank Miller.

I like Frank Miller, but I would never identify as a "Frank Miller fan," if that makes sense. The only work of his I truly love is Daredevil. I respect and enjoy much of his other work, but he's not someone I seek out. I guess he might make it into the top 10 by default. I've never really thought about who my top 10 creators would be.

Miller is up there: obviously Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil, Year One, Hard Boiled, Sin City, Ronin, Elektra, etc. But given his more recent output I’d struggle to put him anywhere but near the tail end so I’ll have to think of my complete list of 10. I think he’s still in though.
Do “comics” include stuff like graphic novels and manga? Or comic strips? If it were just cape comics Miller is in for certain.

At one point Frank Miller would have been in my top 10, but since The Dark Knight Strikes Again he's certainly fallen in my view. The Sin City film redeemed him a bit, before The Spirit made him plunge again.

In that Slack group (with the 11o’clock podcast guys) he’s submitted maybe 30 big guns to the discussion so far, and it’s been tough. Lots that would make my top 25 maybe, but how to even narrow it down to 10. Hopefully it stays this active. I’ll try to post daily maybe if it keeps up.

Frank Miller is an easy in for me. While pretty much everything he’s done post 1990 or so has been disappointing, he’s the writer and/or artist on several of my favorite works. Dark Knight Returns and Ronin were game changers. His work on Daredevil from the regular run to Elektra: Assassin are still favorites. Sin City is stellar, and Batman: Year One is perhaps my favorite Batman tale. That five or so year period will likely never be topped imho. So as much as I hate some of his later work, and can’t forgive the travesty of what he did to The Spirit, no other creator has as many things in my top twenty or so works.

He's on the borderline for me. Probably around 11th through 15th more than top ten. And I say that as someone who despises what The Dark Knight Returns has done to Superman, Batman and most modern superheroes.

Neil Gaiman… I’ve read almost everything he’s done in comics, but I feel like Sandman is the only thing I revisit. I’m actually listening to the Sandman audio book currently.

Jack Kirby: Absolutely. Don't even need to think about it. For the first 30+ of my life I didn't give him much of a second thought. I had read a couple of early Marvel issues and frankly didn't see what the big deal was. Then I got into original art and started seeing his work in it's original state free from the ravages of the printing process. I was stunned and have since gone back and read a lot of his Marvel stuff. There's a lot of goodness, but FF and Thor are just revalatory. On those two series alone he would make my list.
Neil Gaiman: Nope. Never read a word of Sandman. It's a huge blindspot. I've got a ton of it waiting for me on comixoligy, but I have yet to dive in. I'm sure Trevor can relate.

Jack Kirby is easily on my top 10 list. His work at Marvel, DC and indies is the foundations of most of the companies he touched. Kirby is as important to Marvel as Stan Lee was and his artwork has become more revered as time passes.
Neil Gaiman on the other hand has done excellent work in Sandman, Miracleman and the little things he has been involved in comics at both Marvel and DC but his body of work in comics doesn't compare to his body of work outside of the industry. He's an icon for sure and one of the top writers in the modern age of literature but it's really hard to put him in a top 10 list for comics.

Not to spoil my wrap-up post, but with Kirby I don’t particularly love his art, and his writing is meh, but for his ideas he’s easily top ten, if not one. His imagination basically created one big two universe, more than you think of the other, and a fair amount of other stuff too. We probably wouldn’t all be here without him.
Of course, you could totally agree with me there and still not have him in your top ten.

Kirby and Moore should be fighting for the top two spots. Minus Sandman, Gaiman hasn't left much of an impact on the comic book industry. In my not so humble opinion, Gaiman left comic books behind and went Hollywood much too soon.
