Day Ten Response and Wrap—Up
Denny wrote some great stories and is so important for his editing and leadership, and Marv wrote some books that I'll love to the day I die, but both only maybe top 50 for me.
Gerber is right on the cusp for me. Shamefully, while I love the solid amount of Man-Thing and Howard I've read, I was like 12 when I last read it, so it’s long been in my mountains of regina for a proper re-read. Fully expect Gerber to be in once I read it as an adult, but I wasn't a very mature 12 year old, so can't really commit to top ten until I properly read it again as an ‘adult’.
The others are top notch, but none worked on stories that are special for me. So for now, no additions today.
My list so far:
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Carl Barks
Alan Moore
Mike Mignola

Today we going back to a classic 2 piece after a couple of groups and we going to keep it to a couple of people who can really draw. Today I'm asking you… are Darwyn Cooke or George Perez in your top 10?

Perez, easily.
Cooke... I love his work, I love New Frontier, I love Hunter and I love his style, but I don't think he makes it for me.

Darwyn Cooke was an incredible talent that the world lost way too soon. Alas, his body of work, while impressive, isn't sufficient to push him into my top 10.
George Perez on the other hand is an absolute legend. I'm deeply saddened by his illness and he'll go down as the best "team artist" ever. Between the Avengers, the Justice League (and Avengers vs the Justice League to make it exponential) to the Teen Titans, the guy was simply incredible.
With this new addition, my list is now:
My list so far:
Jack Kirby
Frank Miller
Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez
Joe Kubert
Alan Moore
John Byrne
George Perez

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
I love Cooke. The Parker books are my favorite of his, but it's not enough to make the list.
Perez is really tough for me. He (along with Byrne) is my platonic ideal of a superhero comics artist. When I imagine what a superhero comics looks like in my head, Perez art is what I see. HOWEVER, I was not a DC kid growing up. I've read Crisis. It's cool. I've tried reading Teen Titans as an adult and I never get very far. It's fun enough, but it just hasn't grabbed me the way X-Men did/does. I've never really read much Justice League of any vintage. The only Perez that I've read and really loved is the Heroes Return era Avengers. It's awesome, but it just isn't enough to make my list. Someday I'll read through Teen Titans and this will probably change.
That means that my list is currently:
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Alan Moore
John Byrne
Someday we'll get to the Image guys and then my list will really start to fill out!

The first issue of The Fantastic Four that I bought new (#167) was drawn by George Perez. The art is amazing. The first issue of The Avengers that I bought new (#141) was drawn by George Perez. The art was great (even with Vince Colletta inking).
George Perez has been an integral part of my comic book reading life. I loved his art then, and I still love it now.
He is ABSOLUTELY on my list.
Darwyn Cooke? Don't know anything about him. Looking him up, I see he did die WAY too young. Based on what little I see, I don't think he'd have made my list even if I were more familiar with him.
So my list so far (could be edited/changed later)...
John Romita SR
John Buscema
John Byrne
John Romita Jr
Neal Adams
Sal Buscema
Gerry Conway
Marv Wolfman
GEORGE PEREZ
(Somebody's getting bumped off the list soon...)

Never heard of Cooke, but nice artwork.
George Perez - YES! I loved his work on Teen Titans, Crisis on Infinite Earths, etc. He was the only reason I was reading any DC.
My List:
Neil Gaiman
Carl Barks
Walt Simonson
John Byrne
Mike Mignola
George Perez

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
HUGE yes to George Perez. Period.
Darwyn Cooke I'm throwing on there as well. New Frontier was the best thing to come out of DC in the past 30 years that didn't have Vertigo slapped on it. His Parker adaptations were fantastic. Batman: Ego is another amazing work. While O'Neill and Wolfman had more lasting impact on the industry and are both masters, Cooke is more of a personal favorite. The guy really understood the medium and how to use it effectively.
Neil Adams
John Byrne
Darywn Cooke
Neil Gaiman
Jack Kirby
Frank Miller
Alan Moore
Grant Morrison
George Perez
Walt Simonson
Chopping List:
Denny O'Neill
Marv Wolfman

George Perez is an easy call for me. One of the definitive comic book artists of any era. Probably my favorite artist, I enjoy almost all of his work. When I think of the Titans, I think Perez. When I think of the Avengers, I think Perez. When I think of the Justice League, I think of Perez.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
I feel like Perez should be on my list. I recognize he’s a great artist, but he doesn’t really excite me. I have absolutely nothing against him, but he’s not someone whose work I seek out.
I already mentioned Cooke in my post about Bruce Timm, but he’s someone whose work I absolutely love. I met him at the DC booth at SDCC in 2005, and he was running to a panel, but he told me to come back at a certain time. When I did, he drew an amazing Catwoman head sketch in my sketchbook. Whenever artists flip through it, they always linger on that page.
A year or so before he died I saw him at another con and got my Parker books signed. He drew a little Parker head in one of them.
The only work of his I haven’t read is his Before Watchmen book. I’m against that project on principal, but at some point I’ll probably buy the Minutemen book used and view it as a Watchmen art book by one of my favorite artists.
I’ve got friends in animation who worked with him who had nothing but glowing things to say about him.

I wish I could have gotten my New Frontier Absolute Edition signed by him before his untimely passing. What an amazing, amazing talent.
I rate that miniseries up with Watchmen and TDKR, as a testament to what made Silver Age DC Comics so amazing. Cooke got it.

Day Eleven Response and Wrap-Up
Wow, a day of really tough choices here! I want to put both in. George’s work was game changing for me, for a long time the only times I ever bought books just for the art were limited to Perez and Wrightson. Titans was my jam for several years, and Crisis is one of my most re-read tomes. And his current health is making me feel awful for probably having him just outside my top ten.
Cooke's New Frontier is on my Mount Rushmore of short contained series, and I love his art and covers everywhere. If life was more fair and he wasn’t taken from us much too soon, I’m sure there would be enough work to easily include him. But my stupid ‘save the best for last’ thinking still has Parker and much of his work in my backlog, so I’ll have to hold back for now.
My list so far:
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Carl Barks
Alan Moore
Mike Mignola

Nope.
I've enjoyed some Ellis stuff. Planetary is pretty cool and I was just reading some of his James Bond the other day, but he's not someone I seek out.
Lemiere is someone I'm familiar with, but I'm not sure I've ever read one of his books.

I like Lemire, but no.
Ellis just doesn’t interest me for the most part, I’ve read stuff like Authority and Fell and some others and for the most part none of it has stuck with me.

I love Lemire's work but he's not top 10 for me.
Ellis is a little harder. Planetary is just amazing, as is Nextwave. His Stormwatch run going to the Authority is great. Transmet, Fell, his Thunderbolts run, all good. I think he's on the edge for me.

Pass on both. Ellis is an interesting writer but he never wrote anything I'd hold up as amazing. And he's an insufferable prick.
I've never read anything by Jeff Lemire so pass.

I've just recently started reading some of Lemire's work. I enjoy it, he has unusual, original ideas, but too new for me to say he's top 10 in my view.
Ellis, never got into his work.

Tempted to put Ellis on the list just because of his relationship to Nick Cave ...
