Man, Tower was cool to visit in NYC back in the 90s. I guess their model just couldn't survive the current economy.

went there tonight and didnt find sheet! dont bother unless they find some inventory or start selling the new stuff for 50% or more off.

but fyi, sunset store (los angeles, ca) was $10 for 1 or 2-disc rentals and $15 for box sets.

most new stuff was 15% off msrp. maybe ill go back in 2 or 3 weeks?

I'm thinking heading of back when inventory is more like 80% or 90% off - like I did with Sam Goody

Thanks as always for the tips, everyone.

The Chicago Tower in the Lincoln Park area is selling rentals for a little more- $12.99/each- but, nevertheless, for a total of $169.96 (including tax), I got 11 Criterions and 1 non-Criterion:

Crazed Fruit
The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum
Mona Lisa
The Night Porter
Peeping Tom
Qua Des Orfevres
Samurai Spy
Sword of the Beast
3 Women
Time Bandits
The Unbearable Lightness of Being- REAL happy to pick this one up

And, I picked up a copy of Katharine Hepburn's The Glass Menagerie from the Broadway Theater Archives.

I so much appreciate you all bringing this and other deals up. I had thought some other DVD nerd would have picked up all the Criterions- but, this nerd got there first- albeit I left a few behind- those I have, and a few that I just couldn't pretend that I'm interested in. Thanks again to all.

I'm surprised to see that different pricing is showing up for the rentals. Here in NYC (at Lincoln Center) it's 50% off the original MSPR for all the rentals. The flat pricing ($10.00 and/or $12.99) means more expensive titles such as Criterion, Kino, etc. are nice deals, but I'll bet there are people out there grabbing up $14.99 MSRP titles that can be bought new for less than $10.00.

Do all Towers have rentals, because I didn't see any at the Tower in Atlanta.

Greg63- Nope, not all Towers have rentals. For example, one in Chicago does- the other doesn't (they did at one point, if I remember this correctly- but haven't done rentals for some time now).

marty888: Agreed. As others have suggested here- as far as new DVD's/CD's are concerned- the current Tower "discounts", at least in Chicago, are complete crap- even worse than they used to be. Still, I'm sure prices will continue to go down- I'm not the first one posting here who has talked with a store clerk to confirm this- so, it may be worth going back a few times. I'd also suspect that the rentals will go down even further- but with the Criterions, I didn't of course want to risk them still being there when/if rental prices dip further.

Went to Atlanta Tower over the weekend.
15% off DVD and 20% off CD.
There were big "closeout sale" outside the store. A lot of people were there and they shopped like this is the best deal ever (sew many people got 10+ CD/DVD.)
I don't even brother look at the CD section. 20% off $19.00 CD is not exactly a good deal for me.

The one in Burlington, MA never rented so not good deals there (only the old Newbury St store did), but I was there on Saturday and all "black music" (Soul, R and B, Reggae, Rap and hip hop) was 30% off (all other CDs 15% 0ff) which was a little weird to me. World music and soundtracks were also 30% off. I got a lot of good deals on some rare imports and out of print stuff, but I'll go back for general stuff when the % off is better

As marty888 stated above, my local Tower at Lincoln Center in NYC was offering 50% off msrp for their rentals. So something like Jarhead (1-disc), had a $29.99 price sticker on it, which would bring it down to the "low" price of $15 (before tax), when it can be had new for $14 at DDD.

But the bottom line is, people don't know about this site. And they don't know about DDD. And they don't know about pricegrabber. So it seems you tell them that they're getting a deal, and they think they're getting a deal.

As a practical matter, it's frustrating for me to go into Tower these days, which is still well stocked with tons of DVD's that I'd love to have, and they truly have nothing to offer pricewise that I can't beat online any day of the week, or even at Borders with their constant coupons. Oh well.

This portion really applies to this forum:

Some consumers, anticipating such a pricing blowout, were disappointed.
"The first sign I saw that something was wrong with this picture was the sign an employee was holding up in the parking lot of the Buena Park Tower, as I pulled in on Saturday afternoon," said Dave Schmerler, of Westminster. " 'Up to 30% off,' it proclaimed. Already, my hopes for half-off, and then some, were dashed. And that pesky 'up to' had me worried."
On learning that the initial discount for CDs and DVDs was 10%, Schmerler said, "I realized that, even with the 10% discount, I would be paying way more than Amoeba prices. I mean, the average disc price was an astronomical $17.98, so it was still over $16 — before sales tax — per CD! I put back seven and bought one….

I left thinking that Tower doesn't even know how to go out of business properly. No wonder they went out of business."
They actual do know how to go out of business. People are buying when stuff is 10% to 20% off list. Why should they raise the discount if people are willing to buy stuff that is cheaper elsewhere. I rarely go to going out of business sales for this reason. No bargains on stuff I want. By the time the discount gets to an amount I consider a bargain, the stuff I want is long gone.
I did go to Tower because it is 2 blocks from my office. I would not have made a special trip to visit it.

I went to the Bloomingdale, IL store on Sunday. Everythign was jacked up to MSRP. Lost Season 2 was 59.99 and even with the 15% off, it was just a bit more expensive than it was on sale for at Best Buy across the street. If the percentages go up, maybe I'll check back next weekend, but right now the prices aren't even close for me to buy anything, especiall with DDD coming in a month or less.

I was there too Saturday. I bought a couple CD's and a concert I would have bought anyway, but 15% off is not an incentive considering some fo the CD's I wanted were tagged 18.99(!).

But hey, magazines were 30% off!!!!!

Not much of a clearance sale.

The NoHo NYC store has 50% off MSRP all rentals which doesn't seem that hot considering the signs say all sales final and only 15% off new DVDs. I didn't see a single Criterion rental.

That location was re-stocking the rental section late this morning with DVDs that came from other stores - a friend of mine grabbed a few OOP titles.

I was there about 2:00pm Mon. and wasn't impressed but maybe your friend got all the OOP discs. They seemed to have quite a few DVDs but no CC and the prices on the used titles seemed too high compared to new prices on the web.

Bottom line concerning the rentals- as we all seem to know, the rental sale is only worth it if your local Tower store has Criterions or other higher-priced DVD's left. Guess in Chicago I got lucky with the Criterions. I may check back again at some point to see if other rentals are put out there.

ya you scored big time nels grr

im really interested in the new dvd sales. hopefully, theyd do more than 50% off! i think something like 60% off msrp of pretty much any title sounds oh so sweet. i say only (lol) 60% because i cant imagine anyone selling $39.99 criterions for much less than $16.

Well, isn't this kind of sale to not only to clear stock, but to raise as much money as they can to go to creditors?

A liquidator already paid the creditors a certain amount for the stores. They are trying to maximize their investment by getting as much for the inventory as possible. The liquidator bid a mere 500,000 more than FYE bid. An FYE bid would have kept some stores open.

so what's keeping fye open? i can't imagine they'll be open that much longer since they are the same, at least towers had a higher browsing factor.

FYE has the advantage of having mall stores where folks are more likely to impulse buy. Don't forget the teens!

Sad but true. I've become such a bargain hunter since I buy so much music and movies, that I hardly even wander into places like FYE. Had Tower followed FYE's business model and made an attempt to move into malls, they might still have been around. Of course, I also realize that people with shopping habits like me are the main reason places like Tower DO go out of business. I always liked their selection, but with so many cheaper alternatives online, I can't justify paying $18-20 a title when I can usually get it for $10-12 somewhere else.
