Re: The Official Borders Coupon Thread volume 2 - Updated Weekly
I also have most of my Borders.com items sent to my local store, since it's not that far from my house, and I go there all the time.
First - I doubt all the closing stores will be shuttered right away, all at one time. I remember reading that they have had firm plans to close over 200 Borders Express and Waldenbooks stores in any event. So this just adds a few more.
But stop and think - the items come from the same locale and are packaged the same, whether they are mailed to a store or to your home.
I have always assumed that it costs Borders the same amount to mail the items to the store as it does to my home address. To me, the free ship-to-store option was, at least in part, a device to engender more floor traffic at their stores.
So the answer is easy - they should just send any items intended for a closed store to your home address instead. (The only glitch might be if your billing address is different from your shipping address.)
And I have about six back-ordered or pre-ordered items, so I, too, am interested in how they will resolve this.

It's still $25 for standard Borders Rewards. It's $40 if you're a non-member.

I have been trying to place an online order since last night, but I keep getting:
We're sorry, but due to technical difficulties we cannot place your order at this time. The contents of your shopping cart will be saved so that you may place your order at a later time.

I had the same thing happen to me about two weeks ago. I called their customer service line and the rep said there were some technical issues being worked - i.e., he told me nothing. Then, after about two days - everything was OK again. But I was PO'd because I wanted to use a coupon code and couldn't because it had expired.

I guess the original code is now dead? Coming up as expired, even though I used it earlier instore.

Given the financial state they're in, I'll just be taking my business elsewhere from now on.
I still can't believe they're pushing the whole 'Rewards Plus' nonsense still. Give it up.

I wonder how many people, like me, are scurring to use all of their gift cards. That can not be helping their bottom line.
I will not be getting any more of those gift cards from Discover.
It was so much better when Borders.com = Amazon.com

Like I said, I can't envision Borders making to the end of the year as stores start to get shuttered left and right. Just way too expensive for their stuff and not enough quantity was ever in stock. Just my two cents.

I didn't have a problem with their quantity; the problem is the selection is terrible. If you all you want is the most recent releases and best sellers you are fine. For everything else they wanted you to go the website but the site is terrible compared to Amazon. It's even worse than B&N. And the prices are high, though they have been better recently. They had a number of under $10 BDs recently including Zombieland, Hard Candy, Casino Royale CE etc. The only time they could compete price wise is when there are active coupons. But because the selection in store is so poor I rarely found anything anyway. And, unfortunately, they have nothing to set them apart. B&N has the Criterion sales, the B2G1 sales, the A&E sales so I spend a fair amount there. What does Borders offer? Coupons. They recently started price matching but they didn't advertise it well. And it didn't help me much because the only things in ads are usually the new release, Hollywood films and I'm not a fan. A short TV commercial announcing the price matching might have helped bring in some folks. Or not. It's probably too late. And that's a shame. I have some good memories of hanging out in Borders.

Son of a bitch... ALL 3 of the Milwaukee area stores are on the list...
I was just in there the other day, making a purchase, and I said to the clerk "I know Borders is going to be closing some stores soon, and I hope this isn't one of them." She said "Don't worry, this store won't be closing. I just transferred to this store, and they assured me that it wouldn't close." Looks like they lied to their own employees...
