Re: November Criterion Sale

Definitely made my last store run and purchase today to get a few more titles. Picked up Chungking Express and Seven Samurai with two $5 coupons. Now to contact Criterion to get a free replacement case for Chungking Express. Seven Samurai was a last second impulse buy. I have the current 3 disc set on standard DVD and didn't intend to upgrade. I couldn't walk out with only one title.

If you are trying to upgrade the digipack case with a keep case, they are not free, but are available at a nominal fee:

The cost for the replacement cases is $5 per case; this includes the cost of shipping. For multiple cases we offer a discount of $10 for the first two and $2.50 for each additional case beyond that (so, for instance, $12.50 for three cases).

To order the cases, simply make a payment to the email address [email protected] through PayPal, providing your mailing address and item(s) needed in the message field, and we'll send out the materials!

Re: November Criterion Sale

I'm done. At this point I'm only buying them because I can, there is nothing else really calling to me. It is hard to stop, but I can avoid the store for 2 more days.

I know! I know! I've been through the replacement case ordeal on 5 titles already. However after a recent email correspondence I had with Criterion customer service they offered to send me a replacement case on the house if I purchased a copy with a digipak. I just need to contact them again to let them know before they send it. I wasn't going to purchase Chungking Express but the case replacement offer was enough incentive to get me to purchase it. Very cool of them to make the offer.

it's one of my favorite eclipse actually, Calcutta was a bit weak, and Phantom India is a massive slog, fascinating, but really long (it's a tv mini series), God's Country and the shorts are simply outstanding.

I definitely recommend the Summer Hours pick.
And there's Thin Red Line in my local BN, oh well.

I wish I had an offer like that. I want to upgrade my 400 Blows, but each of the stores near me still has the same digipack version they got when it was released! Talk about a slow mover.

Re: November Criterion Sale

I don't know about anyone else, but I want The 400 Blows, The Last Emperor too, but I'm purposefully not buying them. I want a Blu-ray set of The Adventures of Antoine Doinel and the larger Last Emperor set on blu. For that reason, I haven't bought either.

Re: November Criterion Sale

First time using the $5 coupons during this sale. During July I used the internet plus AAA. Must say I had great success with the coupons and no problems once. I never tried to double up just went on different days/ different stores. Missed out on Thin Red Line BD, I ordered it to pick up at store when I did I was given the DVD version, they checked and confirmed that I reserved a BD version but oh well, and no stores in my area have had it the entire sale. So I will have to order it online.....

Biggest miss is BBS Story coming right after the sale.... Once I found out Criterion was releasing this I went crazy, really didn't want to spring for normal price but oh well prob not gonna wait for the other sale really want to see how they improved Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show (one of my favorite films).

So thanks talkers for the info on the sale and coupons!

Re: November Criterion Sale

Placed two orders this sale. I usually buy more in the summer one than the fall. Used AAA membership.

Although not part of the sale, I pre-ordered the BBS Blu-ray set earlier in the week and got it for $64 and change after AAA discount. Not waiting for a possible sale next summer to get that one, as it's my #1 most anticipated BD title of the year. Cancelled my $87 amazon.com pre-order too.

Second order was for Paths of Glory and Black Orpheus BDs. Wondering if I should go for one more. A store not far from me has some of the titles that are backordered online. Thinking about taking the non-member's coupon that's currently floating around and picking up another title before the sale ends. I really wish the AAA discount could be used online for in-store pickups. (That's the reason I usually buy online, although I have a store on my way to work that carries a lot of Criterions).

Black Orpheus and Paths of Glory are scheduled to ship Monday, but the BBS set has a ship date of December 9, despite being released on Tuesday. Did anyone else order this, and if so, is your ship date substantially later than release date also?

Mine still states Expected Ship Date: November 23, 2010 (with Express Delivery through my BN membership). I'm not optimistic on getting it this week if BN uses DHL or even UPS since they'll have Thursday and Friday off.

I ordered it for $64 as well due to the uncertainty of additional discounts with potential future sales.

You can always contact Criterion customer service and ask. Unfortunately the sale is ending after tomorrow though before you could get an answer. I didn't actually contact them looking for a free case, or was expecting the offer. I just wanted to know if newer pressings of Chungking Express were still in digipaks or in the newer cases. I mentioned I wanted to buy it during the B&N sale, but was reluctant to purchase it because I didn't want a digipak case and have to go through the process of buying yet another replacement case from them. They promptly wrote back they would give me the case if I got a digipak.

I did a ship to home order at a store and my ship date is on November 23.

Re: November Criterion Sale

Anyone notice that the sale ends on Monday online and in stores on Sunday?

Anyway I'm going to ask a stupid question here--Is Seven Samurai (BD) worth a blind buy, considering that I don't really like samurai films and am unfamiliar with Kurosawa? Another way of stating this is does this film transcend the samurai genre and could be viewed by people who don't like(or are unfamiliar with) the samurai genre?

Mine's had 12/9 since I placed the order.

Mine certainly wouldn't arrive this week anyway, since I usually get that "Smart Mail" option with the free economy shipping.

I can only say that it would have been for me; I have seen it a number of times before buying the blu.

Yes and yes.

The quickest 3 hours and 27 minutes I've spent in a movie theater. One doesn't have to know or like anything about samurai or Kurosawa to love this film.

I want to get the Fanny and Alexander set but I keep holding off thinking it's a prime candidate for an upgrade to Blu. Anyone hear any rumours about that?

I think the sale ends at 2:59 AM EST on Monday morning....thus the online/store dichotomy.

If you don't like the Samurai genre, or AK, I honestly would not recommend this as your first one. It clocks in at 3:27, is in B&W, and is 1.33:1.

It's a masterpiece to be sure, but you might try one of his other films first to see if it's for you.

Re: November Criterion Sale

I just had someone buy the older versions of The Black Narcissus and The Seventh Seal from me for $11 each, so I decided to order these last 2 Blu's while the sale is still on.

My final haul:

The Darjeeling Limited
Seven Samurai
Paths of Glory
Days of Heaven
The Thin Red Line
Crumb
House
The Black Narcissus
The Seventh Seal
Eyes Without a Face

Way more than I thought I would buy. I would have also like to purchased Bottle Rocket and Night of the Hunter, but I'll have to wait until next time.

Seven Samurai is a masterpiece. You will not be disappointed, and it will draw you into Kurosawa's other works. GET IT!
