I'm thinking about getting a Sony or Samsung. I was considering a TCL, but it sounds like the quality is very hit or miss with them.

IMO, I think the TCL is overall a good product. Especially if you're going to be a good amount of gaming, which I do it with. Quick lag time, and the HDR is awesome. But if you go with Sony or Samsung or TCL, then I think you'll have a good upgrade. I always check the Rtings reviews. They're great at doing comprehensive reviews and they mostly always will give their take on game modes.

I’d go outside here to get a better perspective. The Series 6 TCL’a are highly rated, just about up there with many other top brands.

I think I'm going to get a Samsung. I've been very happy with my current Samsung. 9 years is a pretty good lifespan for a modern tv.

With technology advances, I usually buy a new tv every 2 or three years. They're not expensive anymore.

Yeah, but not every 2-3 years. My pattern seems to be refreshing every 5 years. That’s enough that big changes usually happen in a window that big. Every 2 years doesn’t seem to be of a change in technology.

My plasma is about six years old. It’s hanging in there. Most of the apps aren’t supported and the image retention seems to be getting worse. I have to hold onto in in some capacity since it has 3d capability.

and I got that darn 7 blinking red light of death on my Panny Plasma. I hardly used it too, definitely under 1,000 hours trying to preserved it.

I'd recommend getting one of the newer Roku devices. I bought the newest model RokuStick not long ago (mainly for the Criterion app), and it's a great addition to a TV with aging apps or no apps at all. Getting something like that might breathe a few more years of life into your plasma.

Why So Blu?

My Panny Plasma is still rocking hard, so no way will I be getting rid of it. I may just move it to another room, but I'm bout 90% sure I will have my new 4k tv before the month is over. That 65" Hisense TV is the frontrunner. My Atmos 4K/Atmos receiver came in over the weekend, too. It's happening!

I got a free fire stick from Amazon when they yanked support for my tv, but I’m out of HDMI ports since my model only has three. I might finally dump directv this year so that will free one up.

Until about 3 years ago I had a 1990 CRT, yes. It was still working fine. I grant you that TVs are quite inexpensive compared to the old days, though not new-one-every-couple-of-years inexpensive. On the other hand, does the waste of constant mass-disposal of TVs not enter your mind? I loathe the culture of disposability.

Do you eat take-out food? Bring your own containers or do you re-use what they give you? There are disposal issues with all kinds of products everyday.

If I replace my 3-year old tv, the old tv isn't tossed in the trash. I'll find someone who could use a gently-used free tv.

E-waste and standard recycling are not even close to the same.

Not often, but when I do, I recycle as much of it as possible, which is virtually everything. Call me crazy, but I feel an "appliance" like a TV should last longer than 3 years, or even 9 years, which is a geologic blink of an eye. I'm old-fashioned that way. I'm not an eco-warrior, but I try to do my best.

In my experience most LCD tvs last between 5-7 years. You're lucky if you get to ten years.

I pulled the trigger and ordered the Hisense 65" set - should be here in a few days. I'm excited!

I was blessed to have received it (yesterday) in great working condition, with a non-shatterted screen -- seeing the customer pics of broken sets made me nervous, but was delivered with care. The funny part is that the box it came in and all of the packing material weigh more than the tv itself. I sampled some 4K discs and some streaming 4K material and all came off without a hitch. I calibrated the set last night and all is good so far. I would definitely say that it was money well spent. If I can get a solid 5-years out of this it will have been worth it.

I truly loath the culture of disposability ('throw-away' society), and I'm still using my Samsung 67" DLP, which I've happily owned since 2008. I had to replace the DLP chip about 4-5 years ago, and it saved an expensive and wasteful new TV purchase.

However, now I'm preemptively looking at OLED sets for that sad day when my venerable LED DLP set gives up the ghost. I expect this to happen sooner rather than later.

What are current recommendations for OLED sets in the 60-65" range? Have we come far in the 5 or so years that the tech. has been extant and viable? Can something reasonable be procured in the $1500-$2000 range, assuming "best sale" (pseudo BF) pricing?

I'm astounded how low ordinary LED sets have dropped. I've seen Samsung 65" 4k sets for as low as $399, which is incredible. Even the 'normal' nonsale prices on such brand-name sets hover around $599-699 now, which is less than half of what it was even 5 years ago. I assume build quality has taken a concomitant decline as well.... that baneful "throwaway" society again!

I got a 65" LG C8 last year around BF for $1899 no tax. It is an absolutely amazing TV. It would be a substantial upgrade coming from a DLP.
