hmm... let's see, zero
Wow what am I doing on these forums?

Actually, I currently live with a friend who is a movie nut and he owns 32, and those are mostly the ones I would get so I have no need to buy them yet.

It does make me feel better that I have seen about 80 of them.

I currently own 32 of them, and if I had the money, I'd love to own all of them except for 8 or 9 flicks that I just didn't care for. Some of my all time favs are on the list though.

I own 46 of the titles listed. I need to obtain about another 20. Of those 20, some are available in R1, others are not, and some are only available in R1 as bare bones editions (e.g. Goodfellas).

I own none. Why? Because none of those are the best 109 to me. I like what I like, and those aren't my taste. The only one that would be would probably be 2001. I don't own it on DVD but I do have 2010.

I own none of these, though 4 are on my “wish list”:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Blade Runner
Rear Window
King Kong

Aside from those four, I do not see any on the list that I have any interest in owning. I guess I’m “uncultured.”

Re: How Many of the 109 BEST Films Do You Own on R1 DVD?

First of all, great thread topic! Made me reconsider my next dvd buys, as I've been off topic with the classics. Anyway, the nineteen I have follow like this:

2. Vertigo (Hitchcock/1958/Universal)
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick/1968/Warner)
7. The Godfather Part II (Coppola/1974/Paramount)
8. Seven Samurai (Kurosawa/1954/Criterion)
10. Singin' in the Rain (Donen/1951/Warner)
14. Lawrence of Arabia (Lean/1962/Columbia TriStar)
15. The Godfather (Coppola/1972/Paramount)
19. Breathless/À bout de souffle (Godard/1959/Fox Lorber)
25. Psycho (Hitchcock/1960/Universal)
37. Apocalypse Now (Coppola/1979/Paramount)
37. Taxi Driver (Scorsese/1976/Columbia TriStar)
43. Chinatown (Polanski/1974/Paramount)
55. North by Northwest (Hitchcock/1959/Warner)
65. Blade Runner (Scott/1982/Warner)
65. Pulp Fiction (Tarantino/1994/Miramax)
65. Rear Window (Hitchcock/1954/Universal)
82. Ran (Kurosawa/1985/Wellspring)
95. Once Upon a Time in America (Leone/1983/Warner)
124. Throne of Blood (Kurosawa/1957/Criterion)

As of now, I only have one on order:

16. The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer/1928/Criterion)

And I definetely want the following badly (most I'm waiting for the SEs to come out...):

3. Rules of the Game/La Règle du jeu (Renoir/1939/Criterion)--due in early 2004; available in R2 (bfi)
22. Raging Bull (Scorsese/1980/MGM-UA)--OOP
37. The Seventh Seal (Bergman/1956/Criterion)
43. Ugetsu (Mizoguchi/1954/Criterion)--due in 2004??
65. Once Upon a Time in the West (Leone/1968/Paramount)--due in November
82. Ikiru/To Live (Kurosawa/1952/Criterion)--due in 2004?? Being released in R2 by bfi in September
82. Sansho the Bailiff/Sansho Dayu (Mizoguchi/1954/Criterion)--not released yet
82. The Decalogue (Kieslowski/1988/Facets)
82. Goodfellas (Scorsese/1990/Warner)
124. Loves of a Blonde (Forman/1965/Criterion)

EDIT: I already had Once Upon a Time in America. I mistook it for Once Upon a Time in the West, which I have yet to get. The dvd cover for it looks so amazing, too. I've included current R2 discs on my wish list above. Thank you.

8 that I see

With the Hitchcock Criterion box and many other classics on my want list, the number will eventually get a lot higher.

Many many wants listed up there.

I'm amazed at how many people said they have ZERO!

With several of Hitchcock's best on there, like Psycho, Vertigo (#2!!), and Rear Window, it's unfathomable to me that a multiplicity of members would have none of Hitch's best works.

Psycho, Rear Window, and Vertigo are staples for any DVD collection (IMO, of course). And regardless of the fact 2 of the 3 are non-anamorphic.

Heck, I've never even heard of about half of these flicks. How many of these 109 are foreign-language (non-U.S.) films?

I count 41 non-English sound films and 12 silent films out of the 109 listed. That means that over half the films on the list are in English (more than many people might have expected, maybe).

There's certainly a bias towards older films, but mainly because it takes a while to develop a critical consensus. Some films were so far ahead of their time that it took time to recognize their greatness. Here's the breakdown by year of release:

1910s: 1
1920s: 9
1930s: 11
1940s: 15.5*
1950s: 24.5*
1960s: 21
1970s: 14
1980s: 7
1990s: 5
2000s: 1

*Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible, Part I (1945) and Ivan the Terrible, Part II (1958) were lumped together in the poll

I believe many people are intimidated by any film labeled "great" or get frustrated by black & white film, mono soundtracks, or having to read subtitles. The vast majority of these films aren't esoteric, pretentious, artsy-fartsy films, but rather very relevant and enjoyable, and easily understood by someone without a degree in film studies.

63...

Not bad, since I've never bought a DVD just because of the S&S list.

I guess I just have good taste.

Shocked and Awed....

I cannot believe for the life of me that more people do not have Blade Runner. What's the picture here folks? Am I missing something? Or is it still too truly cult to be in most home libraries? Don't tell me no one is a fan of Ridley Scott, either!

Not really and no.

I am kind of surprised that Casablanca which is ranked number 2 on the AFI 100 best movies list and in the top 5 of most other movie lists comes in at 43 on this list
