Well ROTJ:SE was originally supposed to be released to theaters the same day, and GL, being a fan of Stern, agreed to put off the release for a week so that Stern's film would do well.
Stern proves time and time again that all he does is pander to the current popular public opinion. The only reason that chump is able to say that his movie was #1 and was successful is because ROTJ was put off for a week.

When did Lucas say this?

You kow I have had all three of these on DVD for the past 2 years. I believed they were copied off of the SE Laser Disc version. I picked them up on ebay not knowing this. I will be happy to pay for all three movies again.

Qui Gon Jim -- can you back up that Lucas/Stern info with a link or quote or something?
My understanding was that the release dates between ESB and RotJ were simply too close together (2 weeks). Given how popular the SE theatrcial release turned out to be, they kicked it out a week to avoid canabalizing ticket sales from SW and ESB.
The date change was to make more $$$$, not because GL is a "fan" of Stern.

All I know is that after the great job that has been done on the new trilogy, and the massive features put into the Alien Quadrilogy, just one bonus disc seems...disappointing considering how importent this films are. I rank these movies equally important in the history of Sci-fi as Alien and I feel they should get the same treatment.
However...I am going to buy it. Something is better than nothing. And it could have been worse. Star Wars could have [God forbid] fallen into the hands of Paramount and we might have gotten the movie with no trailer. Or worse gotten it from Warner Bros. in a snapper!

He could present them as "blueprints" to his "original" vision or "how they looked before computers came around".

No, I'll be sticking with my THX Laserdiscs. Not for my own lost childhood, but because I won't subject my children to that kind of pornography.

Milking us again?
I have to say, I don't normally bitch about a movie coming out. But I think good old George is screwing the pooch here. He knows that fans will buy whatever he dishes out and will refrain from releasing any large amount of extras at this time. Eventually when all of the movies come out, he'll come up with some lame ass excuse like a definitive mega super special Jar Jar free edition. With just a few more extras to make the fans also buy that set.
I can't remember the source, I but I seem to remember him saying something along the lines of there not being really any extras during that time period. I find this to be ridiculous. I mean, look at the Alien Quadrilogy. They were able to dig up quite a few extras for this set and have done great at it. If I said that I won't be buying this set would make me a hypocrite. Because I may get caught up in all the hype and buy the set, but I just feel that George or the powers that be are stringing all of the fans out there for yet another way to milk us.
If you look at the history of the VHS Star Wars boxed sets. There have been atleast three separate releases in the past nine or so years. In 1995, they released the Original trilogy with the purpose that the original film was cleaned up. And then in about 1997 or 1998 they released the Special Edition VHS set which is self-explanatory. And then in about 2000 they rereleased that set with some supposed exclusive interviews with some cast of Attack of the Clones. So, now this brings us to where we're currently at. You have the Special edition DVD set coming out with Episode III not yet released. Which means sometime in the near future once this movie has had its course run. It will be combined with all of the other films and then maybe, just maybe we might actually see a worthy DVD release.

It's called upgrading.
Maybe there were aspects of Windows 3.1 you liked, but tough shit. You get XP now.
Face facts that sometimes, we're held to what the creators put out.

Thedigitalbits.com has confimed that these films will get the same Lowery Digital cleanup as the Indy films
You should also know that, as with the Indiana Jones DVDs, the folks at Lowry Digital are once again involved in the remastering process. They're doing digital restoration and clean-up work on the new masters.

from thedigitalbits.com ...
"will be available in anamorphic widescreen video (there MAY also be a separate full frame edition, but this is still TBD)."
If they release these films in fullscreen only, I'll call shenanigans on Lucas's entire BS about "this isn't a democracy, this is about the art of filmmaking."
What *possible* reason could they have to release them on fullscreen if they won't release the version people want?
Why won't somebody close to Lucas just put it to him that way? "Look, George, it's like fullscreen/widescreen, some people like one, some people like the other, but nobody likes it when one person makes the choice for everybody."

I'm probably the only person here that can honestly say not only will I not be buying these, but I could care less that they are out. Everyone on earth who owns a DVD player will be buying these, if I want to watch one I could borrow it from any number of friends, roomate, or family. I LOATHE Lucas, there will be another 80 diffferent releases of these movie & everyone here will buy every single one of them. I'll gladly spend my money elsewhere & borrow these for free.

What people like Lucas and Disney fail to understand is that once you release a film, a piece of art, you gift it to the world (albeit they may pay to see it). Once the world accepts that gift as they overwhelmingly have with the Star Wars Trilogy, you cannot change it and pretend the original doesn't exist.
