Yes, because this set will likely be available before the holidays at some retailers for all of $30 or so.

Hell, most of us will have to get 2nd jobs just to keep up with the monthly payments on this purchase.

And one last thing, all of us asking for a barebones release now, and the super set later? That "now" we spoke of was like five years ago. Then it would have been acceptable. Now, it's just an afterthought.

First of all I have to say that I am excited about Star Wars being on DVD.

Now of course I'm a bit disappointed that it's not the "original" cut of the films but that means I'm going to have to hang on to my VHS copys for a little longer I suppose.

To me this whole controversey can be solved very easily. Just release the original cuts of the film. That puts an end to it and it gets Lucas back into alot of fans good graces. Lucas said at one point that "films are never finished they are only 'abandoned'". I think that part of him truley believes that and the other part believes "if they're right that means I'm wrong". So I do think alot of you are right that it is arrogance on his part. On South Park, Stan brought up the analogy that if the Beatles re-recorded the White Album every year it would be a bunch of garbage by now. I think that hits the nail on the head. At some point you have to learn to leave well enough alone. And in his case he didn't. Incidentily Matt Parker and Trey Stone said that both Lucas and Speilberg were both very angry after that episode of South Park.

Alot of the effects that were enhanced didn't really bother me all that much. But the problem I have with the whole "Greedo shoots first" thing is that Han was sitting three feet away from him. I mean even Stevie Wonder can hit him at that range! Even with that said I'll most likely still buy these DVD's. I, like most people, would also buy the original cuts as well. There's room for both.

In angry at them too because they never actually made the SE of the first episode with dewbacks, imperial walkers, and CGI buff aliens!

NO DEWBACKS=NO SALE!

just imagine what the possible jumbo box set could be like. with what fox did for the Alien Quad(and that was only 4 movies) they could make a package so large that you might have to move to a bigger house in order to unfold it all the way.

A lot of people DID sign a petition (myself included) to request that even a bare-bones version of the ORIGINAL trilogy be available on DVD right NOW and then we'd be interested in a better set with extras LATER.

The problem is that it's already later. When we said that we'd take a bare-bones set NOW, the "now" was 1999. Five years later, and we've waited for this paltry release? Yes, episodes 1 and 2 had more bonus features (an entire disc per film).

I'm not outraged, because I was expecting this shoddy treatment, but I'm still disappointed.

This helps enliven my interest in this shoddy upcoming release, though:

each film will include an audio commentary by a collection of cast and crew, including George Lucas

Otherwise, this isn't really anything to get excited about. I still have my widescreen Original Trilogy and Widescreen Special Edition (silver box) trilogy on VHS. It'll be nice to replace the Special Edition one with the DVD, which hopefully will have better audio and video quality (although the quality of the tapes were very good).

So I'll buy it, of course, and be waiting outside of Best Buy with the other geeks, and I'll be excited to finally have it in my hands once the day comes, but right now, seven months earlier, I'm feeling kinda "eh" about this news.

It's not about disagreeing or agreeing. It's about coming into a thread about the ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DVD release and then saying that the MOVIE SUCKS and/or bringing up LOTR as being "superior"

Exactly. It's pretty much the mods/admins of this sites definition of a thread crap.

Also, discussion about whether or not a movie is good or a disc is a good purchase isn't forbidden. But if a thread is about a release date or disc specs, then it should stick to that topic. People who just want to talk about special features and such shouldn't have to wade through a back-and-forth about the film's quality... that discussion can take place in another thread.

The rule of thumb here is "put the right discussion in the right place."

From USA Today:

"The original versions technically don't exist," says Lucasfilm's Jim Ward, who is the project's executive producer. "(Lucas) wanted to represent the films as they exist in his mind, and that's the special-editions versions."

I read only the first three pages of this thread before calling it quits. It's amazing how quickly this grew to EIGHT pages and in just one day.
The saga (controversy) continues.

Guys,

I don't need to tell you that the orginals have a place for those that were first entertain by them. Lucas is being a pompous self rightous jerk for ignoring those folks.
Film, like any work of art, belongs to the viewer once completed.

Quoted from the Official press release:
http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/n...s20040210.html

Originally stated by Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. and the DVD collection's Executive Producer:
We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time.

I don’t see how that is possible without a release of the Original (non-SE) Trilogy.

SW on DVD

Chill out "original version" people! Believe it or not- you didn't make the movies and they weren't made specifically for you. Go ahead and whine all you like and refuse to buy the set- nobody cares!

More subtle tinkering

This is a good list of SE changes, but it missed one that illustrates the squeamishness that has afflicted Spielberg (cell phones in ET) and Lucas of late.

The shot where Han & Co. enter the Death Star docking bay office and blast the Imperials was edited to tone down the "violence." No more bright squib flashes on the officer's chest as the blaster bolt hits him. Now he just lunges sideways and falls.

Thank goodness Lucas and Spielberg left Indy alone and didn't have the swordsman shoot first.

I'm sorry, did I ever say the choice was always available? NO. Learn how to read. I'm simply saying I like having the choice. There is a choice now, regardless of previous events. And the fact is: there is a choice, I like having the original version, but in the case of Aliens I like the director's cut.
I know how to read buddy. But the simple fact is that there was no choice on Aliens for several years, just like there isn't a choice yet for Star Wars.

Let me be the first to say...

WOOHOO!!!

At least I think I'm the first to say it after just scanning through 8 pages... I just found out and there's already 8 pages! I don't care what flavor they come in, I want them! I predict this will be the best, fastest, selling DVD (set) ever.

The way I look at it, without George Lucas there would not even be a Star Wars in the first place. I will be buying these DVDs, special editions or not. With the exeption of Greedo firing first and Luke's annoying scream in Empire, I like the Speical Editions just fine. I love the scene with Jabba and Boba Fett. One of my first SW toys as a kid was the Dewback, which you could barely see in the original. I love the scene in the new one where the Dewbacks are brought to life. In Empire the new scene with the Wampa makes that creature seem much more terrifying. They are not perfect, but all in all I still love these movies. Come September, I'll be buying this set on the release date.

I just want them to clean up the matte lines that still exist after they "Digitally Remastered" it in 1997. Just do a few Fx touch ups that they didn't do in '97 and I'll be fine with the films themselves.

As for extras,..I must say I am very disappointed that they are releasing them like they did the Indy films. There is soooo much extra material that they could fill up 2 disks per film with just extras. I want Outtakes,. alt takes, alt angles, and especially the cust footage from all 3 films (sandstorm from Jedi, Wampas from Empire, and there is a whole Alt cut of A New Hope that was edited in England in 1976 before pickup shots were done (it is mentioned and pics are shown in the Star Wars Insider).

This should have been to the scale of the Qualdrilogy,..but sadly it won't be

And without all those hard working FX people that worked on the first versions of the Star Wars movies, these movies won't have lived so long in a whole generation of peoples memories.

I'm would like to buy these DVDs, but can't until he releases the first versions as well.

Did Lucasfilm say anything about whether these are the 97 SE's or some further modified version?

Good Points

I agree for the most part. The SE versions with some minor annoyances were cool. I think many are just tweaked because there is no option of watching the originals. But hey, then again in another year, we can all buy THAT boxed set as well.

Boy oh boy, were Matt and Trey right...
