I will be casting my vote for more Executive Producer's Cuts of my favorite movies with my wallet by buying this set of two Executive Producer's Cuts and one (ugh) Director's Cut.
When are you people going to get it through your heads: It's the Executive Producer's movie, he did all the work, it's his genius that brought it to the screen, and he can do whatever he wants with it!
(Obviously, I'd like to see the originals available. (For those with poor reading comprehension skills, or an overzealous evangelical verve, "I'd like to see the originals available" does not equal "Lucas owes it to me to release these movies the way I want him to." It means just what it says: I'd like to see the originals available.) Still not sure if I'll be buying this set. We'll see.)

I think it's obvious where Lucas stands regarding the O-OT, especially with this announcement.

With this news about the Star Wars SE release, does anyone have any idea as to how much my original Star Wars "available for the last time" VHS would now be in collector's value?

The point is that you get to a certain point and you have to stop for various reasons, either contracts or release dates, but that *most* people who make movies would continue to edit as long as they possibly could and would constantly change things until they finally had to abandon them.
Most filmmakers don't use the word abandon, that's all. I've heard the same quote said by Gilliam and Jackson both, and each used a different word instead of 'abandon', and they're all right. If left to their own devices, most filmmakers would tinker indefinitely.
The strange thing is, though, that Lucas *knows* this and still insists on tinkering indefinitely.
Damn, did he really say that? What a retard.

I really do think that the Beatles analogy really is a good one hear. If the Beatles went back and re-recorded the White Album every year it would sound like a mess today. There comes a time where an artist has to "leave it to the ages" so to speak. I imagine there are always things that the creator of a work, be it a book, film, musical composition or what have you, is not going to like about it after the fact. But once it's out there it's up to the public to judge your work. Yeah it is his films but at the same time to go back and say "I don't want you to see them this way anymore I don't care what you remember" is pretty arrogant. And I think it's that arrogance in part that is still behind the decision to keep the original cut under wraps.
I really do think that he should reconsider, but part of me has the sneaking suspiscion, and this is not "Lucas bashing" but it's what I know of human nature, that if the original cuts were released they might outsell the Special Editions. I think he fears his recent would be invalidated if that did happen.

It was François Truffaut who said that films are never finished, merely abandoned. Lucas was just quoting him. And Truffaut got it from the French poet Valery.
In any case, the SEs are highly "unfinished" in my estimation. I'd like to see them replace the silly CGI they added with newer more to date work that doesn't stick out as much.
I mean, if they're going to tinker, at least try to *improve* rather than vandalise the work.

I'm in! I would normally prefer to have the original editions but I've been waiting *so* incredibly long for Star Wars DVDs.

A great many forum members did. Go ahead and search past Star Wars threads, but there's been a ton of people who have said that they want bare bones now and will be more than happy for the double dip come 2006.
These will be the same people who now claim that Luca$ is a lieing greedy bastard who is only out to screw as much money out of his fans as he can. Just watch - history will prove me right.

There is a difference.
I just have no interest in owning the SEs -- at least without the originals available.
This isn't a democracy, and it's my right as a consumer.

It has been a great year for me DVD wise. Many of my obscure favorites have been released in R2 (yes, I have a non region player) May and August will have LOTR:ROTK and September will have STAR WARS.
Darn right I am buying it the second it is available for pre-order somewhere other than DVDSoon.
and any others that indicate joy

No doubt i'll be looking for these the first day they are out...but I wouldn't rule out a preorder either if the price is right....
I wish he would have released the original ones to pacify the ones that like that one better....i'm fine and happy with the SE's, they are better overall, despite lame changes he made....
I wish it was September!!!!
