The Star Wars SE DVD's must be the In thing for a few people but after watching Episode 1 and what a joke it was. You can count me out why should I have to give up my hard earned money to make GL more rich?

Excuse me, but after the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy I'm a bit less than enthused about the DVD release of the STAR WARS trilogy.
If this had been released BEFORE the theatrical run of the LOTR trilogy, perhaps I would have been more excited!...

Don't settle for the Special Edition versions!
I agree - I've paid for the triology several times in various iterations, but the "special edition only" nonsense pushed me to, ahem, alternate DVD sources.
The original, non-goofy, Han shoots first DVDs are out there. And *don't* pay $100+ for them on e-bay. (No, I don't sell them.)
So, ChrisHicks, you can put me your 5% category - I will NOT be buying the SW set. No boo-hooing about George raping my childhood - I just think most of the changes were stupid and the CG weak. (One example of a stupid change not frequently cited: Just before Luke/Leia swing across the trench, he hands her the blaster. When she fires, all of a sudden it sounds like a bloody *shotgun* instead of a blaster.)
And for those swooning about the extras - really, what can George add to the commentary that he hasn't already said (and revised, and retracted, etc.) already? If he included the first rough edit (covered a while back in SW Insider) or even if he included the original versions as alternates, I might be convinced to pony up more $$ for the Lucasfilm empire. Otherwise, no way.

Well, I own the Laserdiscs and will also own every DVD Lucasfilm will release of Star Wars. I'm not getting upset about the SE's; I'm excited that SW is coming!

I thought Lucas' original plan was to release the original trilogy (SE Versions) after he completed Episode III, since he wanted to devote the time to make them truly special. Sounds like he's flaking out on that promise.
I've also heard rumors of John Williams being commissioned to "touch up" Episode IV and add additional music (Vader's Theme) to enhance the narrative flow of the entire series (Darth Vader's Theme didn't exist until TESB, but it's heard in every movie since).

Also, many of us who stood in line back in 1977 can remember the "fun" and "excitement" Star Wars created. Personally, I prefer the original versions (not SE). It was the "cheesy" models and all the glorious minature effects that made the look of Star Wars. 2001 and Space: 1999 used models and the effects still looks great today. You admire the work involved to make them look as realistic as they do with the technology that was available 30+ years ago! The Special Effects teams then were truly artists!
When I watch the Special Editions, I do notice the additional sound effects added to the original soundtrack. The new sound effects sounds "layered" over the original track. I'm not referring to any "new" scenes that were added in, but scenes that aren't visually altered (an example of this would be the "pow" sound effect of a stormtrooper shooting his weapon before Luke and Leia swings across the chasm). The new "layered" sound effects can be heard throughout the movie. TESB SE (Episode V) has a very choppy sound edit during the escape from Cloud City (with a few addtional lines added to Vader and the addition of his shuttle docking). To me, it's bothersome.
The original Jabba was portrayed by an actor, and was not the CGI gluttonus slob we all know and love today. If Lucas restored the original Jabba that he ORIGINALLY envisioned, you would not have seen Han stepping over any kind of tail (Jabba was just a humanoid fat guy with an accent). And what about Biggs Darklighter. Too bad we only see him in one additional scene on Yavin's 4th moon before the final battle. It would have been nice to see him on Tatooine (in order to build character relationship between Luke and his best friend).
To me, the Special Editions are just "Director's Cuts" or alternate versions of the originals. Not necessarily better, but something Lucas felt he wanted to do to fix them up. Lucas cleaned up many of the special effects that bothered him due to the limitations of the time, but these annoyances didn't bother us (the casual moviegoer). The more visible "improvements" are just additional scenes. They're nice to see, but they don't add to the story already being told (unlike James Cameron's ALIENS SE which expanded character relationships and enhanced what the original version hinted at but couldn't tell, such as the relationship between Newt and Ripley).
As the owner of the original trilogy on Laserdisc (both the original and SE versions), I'll probably buy it again on DVD. I'm sure some of the supplemental material from the LDs will transition to DVD, but it would be nice to see and hear it in anamorphic widescreen and enhanced EX Surround.

Why can't there be room to be a fan of both LOTR and SW? I'll be buying the 4+ hour version of ROTK, but I'll also be getting the SE DVD's.
All this constant Lucas bashng is so old. Get a new "thing." They are his movies. He can do what he wants to them, whenever he wants.
I really don't see what all the fuss is about with the nonSE versions. The picture quality would be crappy, bad sound..etc. DVD wouldn't improve them, it would actually enhance the bad parts more. The LD versions from long ago are about as good as it gets for the nonSE's. Just buy a LD player and the Definitive Collection off ebay for like 30 or 40 bucks and be gone.
Back up your VHS or LD tapes on DVD if you refuse the SE's. It's not hard, nor is it very expensive. I backed up my LD's and they'll sit on my shelf, right next to the new SE box set. I'll have both versions and I'll be happy.

Its just plain stupid for people to bash Lucas. James Cameron for years, only released the SE of Aliens on DVD. I didn't see fans continually bash him for that. Sure, the SE of the Aliens may be less jarring than somethings on the Star Wars SE, but its the exact same situation.

I know Lucas doesn't have a gun to my head. I also know this is not unique to him (Ref. LOTR, LOTR Extended edition, cue LOTR Box Set!) but he is taking liberties with his loyal fans and squeezing them for every penny he can get.
It just amazes me how many people think as you do that it is worth buying everything that has come out of this money spinning production. I LOVE the films, all of them, including the new ones and if you guys want to throw your hard earned cash after soon to be obsolete versions of the same film so that they have a pretty look on your shelf where they gather dust thats fine, all the more money for the next movie!
But maybe, just maybe, there would be fewer bootlag copies of the films around if he quite squeezing and started providing people what they want. What HE would want if he thought fan instead of bank account.
