I'll happily buy this set. If/When a new and improved box set is released after the release of Episode III on dvd, I'll buy that as well. It's no big deal - I'll just give my "old" Star Wars dvds to my dad and make him happy.

If he was thinking strictly "bank account" why would he have spent additional money making changes? He did it because he believed (rightly or wrongly) that the changes would enhance the movies. They are his movies, and if it wasn't for his vision, Star Wars - in any form - wouldn't exist.

Marty I only wish that were true. I have no doubt that he did it largely because he wanted the film to look 'right'. And I for one like the changes. Especially the way so many of the previously blank panel walls are now windows onto a city scape etc. The films have a more 'other worldly' and less 'filmed in a bunker' feel about them.

But regardless of whether you love or hate the SE versions. He would not have spent the cash unless he was pretty sure he could get his money back with interest. And I seem to recall hearing in an interview that he wanted to raise the funds for the episode 1-3 movies. I think it is a big chunk of both. I applaud his conviction to the series and the fact that he has devoted a huge chunk of his life to making them. Which is why I find his approach to home viewing releases saddening.

It's sad, though certainly not surprising, that this thread has already morphed into a steaming pile of crap. How "Lord of the Rings" was brought into this, I don't know. Isn't this about "Star Wars"?



I for one am ecstatic that I can finally own this on DVD. I've been waiting for it ever since I bought a DVD player, and I think it'll be done well in the same mold as "Indy." Plus, a cast/crew commentary on each movie?? Holy crap, that alone is enough for me to buy it (let alone the excellent sight and sound).

This does not have to make you happy that I'm looking forward to it. Clearly, there are some people that want their own special version of Star Wars, or the version they saw in the theater some 26 years ago. That's great, because we're all fans of the franchise and want something special.

Unfortunately, and of course fortunately, we're getting what the studio and George Lucas are putting out in September. It amazes me that so many people are so disgruntled over a little green alien shooting first that it will warrant not buying this boxed set. But again, that's your call.

As I've said before, while you are agitated and bitching (no doubt until this is released, and then after, and then when Ep. III is released), I'll be at home watching the movies as a whole, forgetting about all the "Lucas sucks!" b.s. that people in the Internet world throw around like smilies, forgetting about the "original theatrical releases," etc.

But, I'm simple: I just like some entertainment, and Star Wars definitely gives me that. All the politics, marketing, money, and other crap behind it don't concern me.

(P.S. If this post makes you mad, you take movies way too seriously).

No original versions? NO SALE! I will never spend a single dime on anything with his name attached. He may have built the empire, but we paid for it! Therefore, he should let us decide whether or not the original versions are worth watching. Gee, I can't wait to see the new version of American Graffiti; I understand he always wanted Harrison Ford and Paul LeMat to race on speeder bikes, but just didn't have the technology at his disposal...

I am not a die hard SW fan (or even like the genre for that matter), but I respect the film for the catalyst that it was, and will gladly pick it up.

It will be the only SW item I will buy. Period.

(no double dipping for future "new releases", and definately none of the new episodes).

As someone who has spent thousands of dollars on toys and devoted an entire room of my home to Star Wars, I'll be passing on this set.

I believe in George Lucas's right to alter his films in any way he wishes. However, I also believe in the accurate representation of historical records. The special editions are not what came out in 1977-78.

I watch the special editions of LOTR. I watch the special edition of Aliens. I love the UNTITLED version of Almost Famous. BUT: I like having the choice. Therefore, I will probably not purchase this set. I'll stick with my bootlegs.

WHY WHY WHY WHY do we have to choose between LOTR and SW????? LOTR is great. SW is great. Neither director is asking us to choose. They are friends. Get over it!

SW Was never filmed with the intent to as some put it "rape the wallet" like LOTR was. LOTR was clearly designed from day one to have multiple home video releases. The extras were created at the time and so was the "deleted" scenes. There is not one single iota of difference between multiple releases of SW or LOTR. None nada zip zero.

I am a little disapointed that this is 4 discs instead of 6, but to be able to play these films anamorphic, 5.1 on my big TV, I can take a double dip. I am 1000000% sick to death of the ridiculous Jackson worshippers. You bandwagon jumping asses will be hating him when the next fashionable thing comes along.

IF YOUR ONLY CONTRIBUTION TO A STAR WARS THREAD WILL BE TO BRING UP LOTR OR JACKSON DO US ALL A FAVOR AND SHUT YOUR DAMNED MOUTH.

I have avoided buying Episodes I and II knowing there will be a I-III boxset and possibly a I-VI set. I will buy one and only one DVD copy. I remember buying IV-VI on VHS at Costco for $30 about 7 years ago (I still have the set). I hope to get my next box set at costco too.

barring the example of a writer, most of those things you mentioned are products and you can bet your star wars bed sheets, they solicit consumer feedback.
they do it in an effort to provide better service than their competitors because good service breeds good will.
the Lucasfilm empire was built from the sheckels of millions of millions of fans bonding with the material.

its bizarre that i should feel so 'out of bounds' for wanting to legally purchase a high quality edition of the film i originally made such a fuss over.

Don't get me wrong - I feel the same way you do. The news has been a real slap in the face to everyone that turned Lucas and Star Wars into pop culture icons. But can you honestly say you won't watch Episode III?

(Although I admit the realization that Lucas has no respect for his fans has dampened my enthusiasm for seeing his final (?) Star Wars film. If you read the press release posted earlier about the marketing strategy behind releasing this boxed set, it makes it sound like Lucasfilm is run by Mr. Krabbs from Spongebob Squarepants .)

I suggest the mods just close this thread cuz it's been NOTHING about the DVD release and more about how Lucas raped some fans' childhoods. There's still some stuff missing, so lemme fill it in for you all:

- you're not a REAL FAN if you buy this set
- LOTR double dipping is diff cuz we were told from the beginning
- there's 2 kinds of Star Wars fans - the TRUE fan who care about the preservation of the original movie and the APOLOGISTS who will accept anything Lucas puts out

Am I missing anything? I believe the rest of the "criteria" have already been covered by Rivero and his threacrapper buddies.

Jackson was on Charlie Rose yesterday (friday in some markets) for the full hour and CR brought up the subject of dvds.
i don't recall him once saying
"the theatrical version is the verison i prefer and so that is the only one that will be available. This isn't a democracy Charlie"

there is a much different vibe coming out of Lucasfilm than that which issues forth from Jackson and New Line.

in one case, I'm made to feel like they actually appreciate my adoration.
in the other i'm made to feel like an impediment to George getting a relaxing nights sleep.

Everyone always mentions how the SEs show Greedo shooting first, Luke screams like a girl, and Jabba's palace now has a musical number.

But what about another thing that annoys me from Episode IV? Scenes from Mos Eisley where, back in 1977, you were supposed to pay attention to the dialogue and focus your eyes on who is speaking are now changed so that you've got all kinds of silly CGI taking place around you, practically jumping up and down and saying, "Hey look at me!", distracting you from what was the true power of the scene (such as Obi-Wan confusing a stormtrooper with a Jedi mind trick).

If I could teach a film class, I would use this as the biggest example of how Lucas got away from the concept of telling the story first, to now making special effects the most important aspect of the movie.

I don't see what all the fuss is about the old ones... they will soon be available digitally in about 6 years time in the all inclusive everything Star Wars Octology box set, which will only come in a box to stop you losing the one inch data cube its presented on. It will have all eight movies in every concievable version with all the deleted scenes shown seperately or stiched into the film accordingly, with or without commentary by any of the characters... including R2D2.

The best bit is it comes with a free cube of all the LOTR films ever made as a free giveaway. (That bits just for you Qui Gon Jim).

Oh... and in case you are wondering it will be released ONLY on Cube so you'll all have to go buy the new player from Sony to watch it. Watch the release date... I think it comes out about 3 months before episode IX
