Voltron DVD Set?
#51
Heres something odd I found out today:
My Best Buy had the voltron tins in stock today, probably at least 20 of them or so. I buy my copy, everything is all good.
Later in the night, I go to my Walmart, and they have Voltron Season 1 on the shelf, but it didn't have the tin case! It was just a normal amaray case, and I don't know how they did this since it's a 3 disc set. It was definately season 1 though, it had the same price tag Best Buy had with $23.

Here in the UK, boxsets and especially sets that have any sort of special packaging are displayed as empty Amaray style ones on store shelves, just showing the cover art.
This is because otherwise they get stolen.
Even empty collector tins are a target, because people steal them and then use them to flog pirate copies as the real thing - which they are in a way, genuine tins with fakes discs inside.
Just a thought.

AFAIK the initial release was to be in collector tins, to be followed by a "budget" release in standard cases once all the collectors editions had come out.
Possibly, they are releasing them together, but it sounds unlikely, specially as the ones mentioned above were the same price.
It does sound like empty display cases to me; you take them to the checkout and the assistant fumbles around in the stockroom for a while trying to find the real thing.

I couldn't believe neither of the walmarts had them out right at midnight, much less 9am the next morning, and the folks there said it won't even be in a new release section, etc. Didn't they pay extra to get it early? Just don't get it.

Well I may be one of the few who didn't really care too much about whether it came in the tin case or not as long as I could get it early so I actually purchased the keepcase edition from Wal-Mart. I can confirm that they are not just display cases, but the actual dvd set. I didn't see any of the Tin cases anywhere. I'm wondering if the deal wal-mart made only allowed them to release the standard edition early. My main concern though was on opening the release. Yes it has all three discs with all 15 episodes but there's nothing listed on any of the discs for extra features. No unaired pilot or interviews, nothing. Now last I'd heard they were supposed to include at least these as extra features. I'm worried now that the keepcase edition is some alternate bare bones edition with the extras reserved only for the tin set. I do see two listings for two versions on most sites but cant find any listing for extras. Worse, since I've already opened the set i dont know how much of a problem Wal-Mart would give me about returning it if it is indeed the wrong edition

I had heard that the keepcase edition was going to be bare-bones - only the collectors edition in the tins would have all the extras. It was intimated that the Collectors edition would be first, to be followed by a "budget" edition in standard cases later.
which is why I'm surprised they're releasing them in parallel - and for the same price.
It sounds as though someone, somewhere, has screwed up on this.
The TVShowsOnDVD article with a preview of the set shows a screencap of the extras on disc Three, they are Original Pilot; Staff Interviews; Making of the DVD's; Animeworks trailers;Robot Chicken (A Voltron parody)
also, a TVshowsOnDVD news release gives some space as to the availability of the tins, whether they will be Limited, and whether a "budget" release was being considered. On this page about halfway down.

Took a look at WalMart.com
The one released today has an RRP of $29.99
The one for release in two weeks time is marked COLLECTORS EDITION and has an RRP of $39.99
On Best Buy, only one is listed, at RRP $39.99 (not marked Collector Edition though) and it's sold out at least as far as online ordering is concerned...

Maybe old news by now, but... All the Transworld stores (Coconuts, FYE, Sam Goodys, etc.) have put these sets out for sale as well due to "other stores jumping the street date." $24.99 and does come in a metal case.

I finally bought Voltron yesterday as my local Best Buy did indeed receive their shipment. I have a question. The top of the case pops right off like others have stated. When I put the top back on the case, it doesn't stay on like the Disney Treasures. Should the tin's top fit like the Disney Treasures?

tvshowsondvd.com has indicated that Wal-Mart and Best Buy are selling two different versions of the Voltron sets as most of you already have been indicating on this thread. As per the site, Best Buy will be the only place in which you could buy the Collector edition (Tin plus extras) while Wal-Mart carries just the standard packaging set with no extras.

Yep, you can tell from the $39.99 RRP tag.
If fact, it looks as though WalMart are the only place to have the slipcase edition, which they have priced the same as all the other places who are selling the tin right now (either in stock or pre-order) even though the slipcase is $29.99 RRP.
So unless you really want the slipcase one, without the extras, then don't buy at WalMart. Or not until they stock the tin one, from the 26th. if you really want to buy at WalMart...but why would you want to?

Yeah eother order it online from a good store, like Amazon, or highstreet where you can check on what you're buying. BestBuy have the tin now - and so do some other stores who saw BB and WM release it early.

For those who speculates what the package looks like. Here it is!
Here is the TIN version of Voltron Season 1

*I agree with other members who noticed how sensitive the TIN case is. So my best advise, make sure the one you got has an embossed mouth of the blue lion if you buy the TIN set. Most TIN I saw were heavily dented

crap, i haven't opened my tin yet. took me a while to fish through all the sets to find one without any dents. now i have to worry about the digipak inside being dented by the tin's round corners.
