The case is designed for the 3x2disc sets. Hence the title. Unfinished Tales. They are the movies that were cut for time or whatnot. While the books are the fans' masterpieces.

The slipcase is the same thing that the Extended Trilogy Boxset comes cased in correct? Why would anyone pay $50 for the case when the boxset costs $75?

Its like abintra said, this is the same slipcover that is included when you buy the Extended Trilogy Boxset for $75 or less. So why pay $30 to $50 for something that you can get with the actual DVD for $75? Just buy the boxset if you are so desperate for the slipcover and sell the DVDs. At least this way you will only be paying $15 tops for the slipcase.
