If I buy a 43 disc set and find out that there's a problem with disc 30, I would expect the store to open a good set and swap disc 30 with me. They can then send back the new set they just opened along with my bad disc 30.

The alternative is they take my bad set and give me the new one (and it had better be more than a 30 day return policy unless you have no life). Then I have to watch discs 1-29 just to make sure the new set didn't have problems on other discs.

This might sound crazy, but I've been in this position before and have heard from others who have been as well. I saw the first few discs of my Buffy Season 1 set multiple times before I got a complete set that was in good condition. The first time disc 3 was bad. I had to swap the whole set only to find the next set had a bad disc 2.

The new set sounds neat, but even if I didn't have all seven seasons, I wouldn't touch it.

This is a truly excellent point, IMO. It could (and for most people, will) take months to watch 7 seasons of Buffy. No retailer will take returns indefinitely. That leaves you at the tender mercies of the studio to get a disc exchanged... and in the position of having to wait weeks for the new disc so you can continue to watch the series, assuming the studio will exchange the disc at all.

And I don't know about anybody else, but I've had more defective discs in Fox season sets than in the rest of my entire collection combined.

It's kind of funny this is being discussed. I'm actually in the process of exchanging a defective set of Buffy season 4 since it came with some pretty bad scratches that made it skip.

I never buy big box sets like this online unless it's absolutely 100% necessary for this reason. Almost every season of Buffy I purchased in store, had a loose disc and I had to exhange it.

Anyways, as far as the stores exchanging only one disc out, they should have no problem doing it. I had this happen with Band Of Brothers four discs in. I went to exchange the set at Best Buy's customer service desk and explained to them that I was NOT going to watch all those previous episodes again when I knew the discs I've already seen were fine, and that I would only allow the swap of one disc. The customer service girl looked at me like I had two heads and said they couldn't do that because they have to send a set back to the company to get reimbursed for it. So I had her call a manager and explained it to him... they pull a new set off the shelf and exchange the full set for me and send me old one back in, there's one full set being sent back to the company. If they take one disc out of one case and SWAP it with one disc in another case (as long as it's the same disc), they will STILL end up with one set to send back for reimbursement. These idiots at these retail stores do not excell in service and don't have any common sense. If they give you problems with such an exchange then get a manager and complain.

But yes, there's the 'time' issue when it comes to watching and finding issues. A store will only honor so long and FOX should have no problem replacing a damaged disc.

But overall the best precaution you can take is to just make sure before you start watching you take the time to make sure no discs are loose, and make sure there are no scuffs and scratches. I know it may take some time because there will be so many discs but in the end you may prevent yourself some hassle.

Now, onto this set. I like this show a bit, and the packaging will have to be incredible for me to actually want to purchase it. A set so large and so expensive better be absolutely one of the best packaged sets ever for something I already own. And if FOX isn't willing to accomodate us with a bare bones box with the additional disc at a much cheaper cost, then I'm not going to be very happy at all. You bet I'll be calling their customer service in order to see if I can obtain one.

I disagree; people who buy used sets are looking for discounts and deals, and wouldn't be buying new sets either way. (I'm not saying all of them would, just enough that that's the way the marketing people look at it.)

Anyway, if all they cared about was the market for single-season sets (which they make more money on), they wouldn't be releasing this at all.

I disagree. I think they're going after people who've been renting the series or watching it in syndication during the past few years. People who are just now thinking "I'd like to own that" but bounce off the $350-ish price. It's also a way to keep the Buffy DVD product current and easy for retialers to stock, since it's one item with one SKU.
I don't know why they'd bother putting in any new bonus material, if that were the case. If all they were doing was re-packaging the releases (like, say, the 'Star Trek' full series sets), I'd agree with you, but this is clearly being targetted at big fans.

Sure. They just tend to forget that people who've spent money on their product in the past are statistically the most likely to do so again in the future -- as long as they're not given a reason to feel burned and abused.
It just seems like you're taking it really personally, that's all. The people who are the most likely to buy this set are statistically likely to own at least one season already. And, anyway, if studios lost money and customers due to double-dips, every single studio would have long ago gone bankrupt. They do this because people buy them.

I'm just saying, the studio would lose more money by letting the extras be released seperately, and thus depriving themselves of almost all the people who'd double-dip, than they will lose by angering people who have already bought all the season sets anyway and, thus, given them money already. Sad but true.

I don't think I'm understanding what you're saying, because it reads, to me, like you're claiming that people would say, "Oh, that Fox, they were so nice to release that Joss Whedon documentary seperately, I think I'll go ahead and buy some television shows that I wouldn't otherwise buy, just to show them how much I appreciate it. I mean, I was never a big fan of 'Millenium', but they're such a nice company." The number of people who are going to avoid buying any show released by a company because of double-dipping, or a previous release being high priced, or whatever, that just doesn't seem to be a significant enough number for the companies to worry about.

I think this is a great point, except that, as pointed out, it sounds like you just didn't complain enough; there's no legitimate reason why a store won't swap a single disc, especially with a set this huge.

In fact, unless the disc art was changed, there'd be no reason they couldn't just open up the release of whichever single season it's from and swap that, since those don't have as limited a release as this one does.

R2 will be getting a complete box set of "angel" & "x-files" so I bet those will follow suit around this time next year... which would be awesome because I"ve only botten season 1 of X-files

Eventhough I've gotten really pissed off about all the rereleases of TV all of a sudden, I will say that "Buffy" is the only one that I'm going to consider putting my money towards... It will be nice to have a small box with all the episodes together, and that DVD is something that I will have to see... Sex and the City & Friends, I can so live without...

I've been debating hunting down X-Files seasons for a while... and I'm glad I actually haven't gotten around to introducing my wallet to that idea as of yet, if there's a set coming eventually, I'll wait.

So, does $199.99 suggested price mean that is what stores should sale it for, or the MSRP that they then will discount from?

Personally, Im expecting that opening weeks sales for this will be in the ballpark of $129.99 to $139.99, but after that it will go up to like $149.99 - $169.99

$130 seems way to cheap for it, even during the first week. I expect this to be in the $150 range. As soon as I finish Season 7 with my girl I will be putting all my Buffys on ebay in anticipation of this set.

I have all the Buffy Seasons Sets and selling on ebay would take too much time for me. I am a very busy guy. The only way I would by theis set is if the storage is smaller than it takes for my 7 seasons sets I have now and for it too all be in Widescreen.

I sold seasons 2-7 on ebay for a friend last month... He was looking to make some money and tired of them... I put them at $15 starting bid with a $25 buy it now, every set sold for the $25. Now I see some of you here got $30 per set. Whaaaa. Maybe I shouldn't have done the 'buy it now'...

Oh well, made him about $140 after ebay fees.

A Buffy box means nothing to me, but a Buffy-bot on the other hand, that would be a no-brainer.

My buffy bot would probably end up being worn out within a week, ha.

Anyways, I could see this set selling for probably $169 or possibly even $159.

DVDEmpire currently has this up for sale at $149.99, and given that DVDEmpire's prices are usually a little higher than most others, it probably will be around $140 on release week.

I feel kinda bummed as recently I've been getting into the show and this set was annouced. However my friend loves the show and was going to get another copy of each set so this worked out perfectly for her.

I would like to see the extra disc if this is a true documentary (or even approaching a true documentary) as none of the extras on any of the sets I have were really good or deep. Most of the extras were 5-10 minutes of fluff. One way or another I'll see it.

I only have seasons 1-4 and only really want seasons l-4 so I'm not too hot about this. It would have been really cool if they said to cut your proofs of purchases out and send them in along with shipping costs and we'll send you an empty box and the extra disc (save the signed letter for people buying this set new) as a thank you for supporting these releases though.

As I hypothesized earlier in the thread, DDD is perhaps going by the "Seasons 1-7" price (which, I think, lists for around $350; Amazon has it for about $225) rather than the new "Complete Series Box Set" price. I bet they will correct it sooner or later.

Okay, 140 is sounding much more reasonable/attractive/tempting....
I've seen S1. That's it. How good of a blind buy is this set? I've heard that later seasons dropped in quality; are they still worth watching/buying?
Of course, the 'Russian roulette' of getting a 40 disk box set is somewhat unnerving...

Don't listen to those people.

The series had 144 episodes. Maybe not every single one was perfect, but it was a good show from start to finish. If you liked the first season and are at all interested, it's an excellent buy. The first season was the show's weakest. It only gets better from there.

I'll be blind-buying this. However, I'm definitely going to pick it up from a B&M store. Even if I pay a little more, it'll be worth it for that extra convenience if I end up with a bad disc.

After re-watching season 7 I decided it wasn't as bad as I thought it was the first time through. Still my least favorite though.

$140 would make this awfully tempting. Grr.
