I've gotta say the first R1 looks better than the CE in the image comparison shots.

The glow-in-the-dark packaging works much better!

I was reading on wikipedia, and they say that Linnea Quigley wore a flesh-colored prosthetic over her crotch for her infamous dance scene. Is this true?

Damn that is depressing. I watched this movie when I was a little kid, and that was my first experience with seeing a completely naked woman. Now it turns out she wasn't completely naked? My childhood dreams are shattered.

Just taking a quick look, it seems the new SE is slightly cropped at the top and bottom, especially in cap #6.

Unfortunately, it is true. They talk about it on the previous dvd release.

I'm going to keep the faith that she's really naked on that crypt. I don't care what she or anyone else says. That was quite a moment in my adolescence, too.

I only own the first release, so I'm not sure if everything carried over to this new CE.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but here is what's on the first release in the way of special features:

Commentary from Director/Writer Dan O'Bannon and Production Designer William Stout

"Designing the Dead" Featurette

Conceptual Art by William Stout

TV spots

Original Theatrical Trailer

Well, you and taffer can always right the injustice that was done to your childhood by checking out Night of the Demons. Linnea's bush makes a guest appearence.

I thought the DVD edit of 'Night of the Demons' is the cut R-rated version and not the Unrated version that WAS released on VHS as such.

oh that's great to know since Amazon lists the disc as being 'R' rated and secondly, the VHS version of the film had a big ol' Unrated tag on the cover which is missing from the DVD version.

Amazingly, I found my copy at Wal Mart for $14.44. Figured that would be one of the titles they wouldn't carry.

I concur...there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the screen grabs from the original R1 release versus the CE. A couple of the screen grabs from the CE seem darker (the blacks), but I'm finding less of a reason to double dip at this time. The glow-in-the-dark slipcover is nice though...

The VHS was distributed by a different company. Anchor Bay acquired the rights, so it's no wonder they didn't have a huge stamp that says "Unrated" on it, their DVD art was specific to their release (they alter a few things, but it's fairly close to the theatrical one-sheet) Here's a link to a shot of the back of the DVD (says "not rated" toward the bottom)

I'm not double dipping on this one. Especially when there are a plethora of deleted scenes being unused.

You're right. Especially that one shot of the 3 guys at the wharehouse, it's not framed the same.

I'm confused about your last comment, is that referring to 'Return of the Living Dead' or 'Night of the Demons'?

Sorry. I should have clarified, I cut from talking about NOTD to a comment about the new DVD of ROTLD. There are probably 20-30 minutes of alternate footage for "return" that were included in a workprint or something. It includes several cut scenes and an alternate ending, and I think an alternate opening. Director Dan O'Bannon wanted to put the scenes back in for a Director's Cut when they did the first DVD release, but MGM didn't want to pay to restore the footage and make a new print, expecting the disc not to be a huge seller. They told O'Bannon that if it sold well they might do a director's cut down the road.

Apparently he's in a legal dispute with them over money not given from his participation in the first DVD release, so he wasn't involved in this one in any way...

The deleted scenes are STILL not available, and it looks like no director's cut will see the light of day anytime soon...

Plus, I'm not happy with the transfer comparisons, especially the extra cropping. This is definitely a no-sale for me. I like the first edition. Maybe one day I'll rent it to hear the cast commentary.

Regarding Night of the Demons, the UNRATED version not only contains more gore (etc.) but it also has a few more scenes with the kids at the party that were just cut for pacing reasons or something. So it's not just 30seconds of cut gore footage, it's like 3+ minutes longer than the R-rated cut, and YES, Linnea Quiqley is very much naked in it...

sans the party crashin' zombies... what a retarded way to record a commentary track...

on the other hand...

the zombie commentary track on the import of 'Shaun of the Dead' is a hoot.

The previous DVD was 1.78, the collector's edition is 1.85 which might explain the difference but regarding comparisons in terms of pic quality based solely on screen caps someone else made, I have *never* trusted those. Compare the DVDs yourself on your own screens.

Looks like I made the right decision to not buy this based on reviews. The commentary sounds lame and the extras seem sub-par. I still hope it sells well, though, so that we can maybe one day get the director's cut with all of that footage restored.
